1. Introduction
a. Appreciation of organisers and thanks to all participants and supporters of this initiative
b. Background: I was born in Yala, Okpoma, Yala, attended Yala secondary commercial School, Okpoma, benefited from a non-formal Yala community scholarship program for tertiary education and have been involved in several modest community service programs in Yala. In 2015, I was designated one of the heavenly tribal messiahs (UPF initiative)for Yala and recently launched the Yala community Health Support services Ambulance Scheme, among others.
c. I am delighted to be part of the initiative and available to offer myself in ways that add value and advance this inspiring effort. I believe that our society will grow as high as we are able to grow our young people and provide enabling environment for them to develop and utilize their inherent potentials.
2. Peace
a. The desire for peace is universal and everyone in Yala without exception yearns for peace not only on earth but even after death as evidenced in the usual prayers of rest in peace when anyone passes on. The fundamental reason is that no one can develop in a sustainable way and achieve his or purpose in life without living in peace. In same way, no society can develop without being peaceful.
b. Peace is not just the absence of conflicts, violence, wars and even quarrels and disagreements among people but rather the presence of harmony, cooperation, love, justice, fairness, equity, interdependence, shared values, etc. Peace is the most cherished state of being, desired by everyone beginning from the inner peace within each person and between each mind and body and expanding to between individuals, in families and to the wider society.
c. Unfortunately, despite the universal desire for peace and the quest for peace in our society, we live in a world of conflicts, violence, disagreements, conflicting interests leading to all forms of violence and even wars. These issues have retarded the development of our society as several opportunities are not being utilized due to our focus on our differences more than our common aspirations.
d. There is the need for us to work together in harmony to develop our society. To achieve such, we need to build a peaceful Yala first, where there is harmony, love, cooperation among the people. The requirement for a sustainably developed yala is to establish a peaceful Yala.
e. Throughout history, people have struggled to build a peaceful society but those efforts ended in failure because they did not clearly understand and utilize the fundamental principles for building peaceful societies. What I will like to share with you briefly is the needed peace principles and peace architecture for a peaceful Yala society that can form the foundation for a developed Yala.
3. The Fundamental Peace Principles for a Peaceful Yala
a. We all have a common origin, a common parent - we must recognise that despite our different parental names, we are all brothers and sisters as well as members of one Yala family.
b. As citizens, we are essentially spiritual beings in human body and must recognise the importance of spiritual values and development and that we are all in transition to the eternal spiritual world.
c. The family is the school of love and peace and the foundation for sustainable development. Without strong family values, no society can grow and develop well.
d. The principles of "living for the sake of others" is the way to peace and development
e. Interdenominational, interreligious, inter family, inter community and their political cooperation is essential for peace in Yala.
4. The Peace Architecture For a Peaceful Yala
a. Building a culture of peace in Yala (Yala Peace Vision YPV)
I. Yala peaceful code of conduct for all citizens
II. Yala peaceful curriculum of education for families, schools and communities
III. Yala peaceful constitution of associations
b. Strengthening the structure for peace in Yala (Embodying the Peace Vision)
I. Raising Peaceful individuals
II. Growing Peaceful Families
III. Establishing Peaceful communities and kingdoms
c. Developing and Utilizing the infrastructure for Peace in Yala (Creating Environment for thenPeace Vision)
I. Production of Resources in Yala (solid, liquid, gaseous and solar resources)
II. Distribution of Resources in Yala (roads, markets, transportation, technology, etc)
III. Consumption of Resources in Yala (Food and utilization of other resources through investments, etc)
5. Conclusion
a. We live in a special moment in human history, a moment of transition from the old world wars and underdevelopment and suffering to a new world of peace, development and happiness for all. If we take the lead now in building a peaceful Yala, we can become a model for many societies to learn from.
b. To achieve such, we must:
I. Invest seriously and consciously in the education of all citizens of Yala through formal, non formal and informal institutions. From this time, we should make a determination that no one in Yala should be allowed to die without basic education. We should also say to ourselves and the government that only one university in our region is not enough. Aside Mary knoll college in Okuku Yala, we can also have Mary knoll university. We should say to ourselves, paying huge transport to Calabar and other places to school shouldn't remain.
II. We need to create an environment for this to happen by positively engaging our elders and VIPs.
III. We must develop a policy for preparing future leaders now.
IV. Also, we need to explore ways of utilizing ICT in Yala and resurrect very urgently that Radio Station in Yala, massively promote internet services and work on the issues of banking services, tertiary education, etc in Yala.
c. At a recent UPF Africa Leadership Assembly held in Dakar, Senegal, we proposed what we called the Heavenly Yala projects, which we hope to work with other stakeholders to implement and make Yala the shining society for all. I am grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of these ideas today and I hope that it may add some values to the work that you are trying to do too.
THANK YOU.
