Group Write PMB, Others, Call For Reappointment Of NSCDC CG

A group, Coalition of Civil Society Organisation (COCSON) has written to President Muhammedu Buhari, requesting for the reappointment of the Controller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu.

Citing his achievement since taking over the helm of affairs of the Corps, the group in a letter to the president, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Inspector General of Police and the 36 state governors on Wednesday said it desire to endorse and push for a second term for the Commandant General stems from his patriotism, excellent leadership and monumental achievements, nationalist posture and desire to ensure that the project Nigeria succeeds.

The letter signed by the Coverner, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere and other coordinators from the zones said  COCSON which has succeeded in checkmating activities of public and elective office holders do not engage in praise singing but that resolve to come out enmasse for the support of Abdullahi for a second term speaks volumes of his credibility.

Chukwunyere who said the decision was taken after an emergency meeting said the NSCDC has been aggressive in achieving all its mandate and even surpassing it under the present leadership.

He said, "Transparent Recruitment Process into the NSCDC, aggressive and Proactive effort in combating criminals and terrorists which culminated in the capture of the Boko Haram’s Improvised Explosive Device logistics supplier, making Intelligence Gathering a pivotal part of combating crime, terrorism and economic saboteurs, assisted greatly in redeeming the image of Nigeria Educationally by partnering with Joint Admission and Matriculation Board to ensure sanity in our Educational system among many others are some few ways the Corps has performed under the current leadership.

"Mr President, we are certain that he will take the NSCDC to heights only imagined and that we as citizens of this great country can sleep with our eyes closed because we are sure that economic sabotage, vandalism, and other ills of the society will be a thing of the past if he is retained to work his magic on the NSCDC for another term," the group said.

FG declares Amotekun illegal: Gani Adams replies Malami in open letter

Dear Sir,

PROTEST OVER YOUR ILLEGAL ORDER TO SOUTH-WEST GOVERNORS

I find it disturbing your statement of Tuesday, January 14, 2020, declaring the security initiative of South-West governors ‘Amotekun’ as illegal.

You also threatened that the full course of the law will be applied to anybody promoting the Amotekun security initiative.

Maybe you have forgotten. I need to remind you that you are the Attorney-General of the country, not a section of the country.

So, your outburst against the governors who were elected, not selected or appointed, is against the spirit of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The right to life is universal and no government can legislate against that. I don’t need to bother you about killings, kidnappings, banditry and other criminal vices in the South-West recently.

Even Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Yoruba leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, was killed and nobody has been arrested in respect of all these killings.

One thing is clear: Nigerians have the right to protect themselves. Not only that: South-West people have a right to protect and defend themselves against attacks.

Amotekun is an initiative by the South-West governors to defend our people.

Where you are getting it wrong is this: The Amotekun initiative has nothing to do with the territorial integrity of Nigeria. If there is a breach of the territorial integrity of the country, the military will come in immediately.

So, nobody is rising against Nigeria, as your letter to the governors, directly or indirectly, implied.

What is happening is that our people no longer feel safe because the land has been invaded by some elements from within and outside the country.

It is unfortunate that rather than praise the governors, you are condemning their action, thereby strengthening the hands of those who believe the Federal Government is against some sections of the country.

As a lawyer and a Senior Advocate, you should know that you are not the law. You are only the Attorney-General, not a court.

It is only a court of competent jurisdiction that will decide if what an individual, group of individuals, an entity or a state does is legal or otherwise.

So, it is only a court that can invalidate the South-West joint security initiative, not you.

I want to establish this fact that the Yoruba have a right to protect themselves from attack or violence of any sort.

Issues of security is highly sensitive, and we can now understand where the threat is coming from. It is unfortunate that the FG is doing everything to frustrate the southwest governors’ efforts.

It is unfortunate that rather than praise the governors, you are condemning their action, thereby strengthening the hands of those who believe the Federal Government is against some sections of the country.

We knew about the intrigues that played out at the meeting. We knew about the frustrations at Aso rock, but the governors, having realised the implications of playing politics with the lives of their people, stood their ground and went ahead to launch the security outfit as planned.

So, it is your position on this volatile situation that is illegal, unlawful, immoral and of no effect because your declaration has proved some critics right that some states in the country are deliberately left vulnerable to attacks by criminals.

This week is the 50th anniversary of the end of the civil war. We should do everything to avoid plunging the country into another war.

Mr. Malami, please don’t set a bad precedence.

NAF Kills Insurgents, Troops Abort Attacks

  • DHQ condemns ‘military torture video’
Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja
Fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday bombed logistic facilities of the terrorist group, Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) in Tumbun Kaiyowa in Northern Borno State.
A NAF update issued wednesday by Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the jets struck structures hidden in dense vegetation within the locations.
“The operation was executed following confirmation by a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform that some terrorists were harboured, along with their logistics items and facilities, in some structures well-camouflaged under dense vegetation within the location.
“Accordingly, the ATF scrambled two Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the location, recording direct hits on the structures and logistics facilities, which were seen engulfed in flames. Several ISWAP fighters were equally neutralised as a result of the strikes”, he said.
In a related development, the Nigerian Army said troops aborted a planned terrorist attack on 114 Task Force Battalion, E Company’s location at Izge Village in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State
It said troops of 143 Battalion laid an ambush on the terrorists’ withdrawal route along Kubu village on June 4, 2019.
“Consequently, the terrorists entered the ambush which resulted in the death of unconfirmed number of the criminals and the recovery of four Ak 47 rifles one mortar, assorted ammunitions, two Hilux vehicles and one pumping machine. There was no casualty on the part of the national army.
“The Nigerian Army, through the Theatre Command OperationLafiya Dole uses this medium to commend and encourages those who availed the troops the information that led to the success of the operation, and further enjoined members of the public to be more forthcoming to the security agencies with useful information about the terrorists and other criminals in Nigeria”, a statement issued by Army Spokesman, Sagir Musa, said.
Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) last night condemned a torture video involving troops and some bandits, and blamed the troops for overzealousness.
“The attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has been drawn to a video footage trending in the social media, visually displaying the maltreatment of some suspected armed bandits and kidnappers who were arrested along Road Abuja – Kaduna during a recent operation.
“Apparently the troops had in their overzealousness tied one of the suspects to a stake in a desperate attempt to extract information from him.
“The DHQ wishes to unambigously state that the act exhibited by the troops in the video footage is very unprofessional and an outright violation of the code of conduct handed down to guide the conduct and behaviour of troops of the AFN during operations. The DHQ therefore, in very strong terms condemn this act of ineptitude and exhibition of lawlessness”, a statement issued by Acting Director, Defence Information (DDI), said.
It said: “the DHQ considers the conduct of the troops highly regrettable. In order to promptly address the anomaly, the Chief of Defence Staff has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to bring to book all those found culpable in accordance with the military justice system.
“We seize this opportunity to urge members of the public to please report any such misdemeanor to security agencies whenever they are observed”.

Gun License Revoked, Was Obasanjo Wrong? See details

Remours flowing everywhere, which I particularly read from the Eagle Eye Report blog says that the federal government of Nigeria under His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, has revoked all gun licenses given to citizens through an executive order as from 1st of June, 2019. This automatically means that all owners of gun must find the nearest police station to them to drop their guns effective that day or be seen as criminals. While we don't question the powers of the president to give such orders and the intentions behind it, if they are genuine and not forced on him, it is my earnest believe that Nigerians must think critically about the after effect of the implementation of such orders whether it will bring peace or more unrestrained violence.
Former President Olusengu Obasanjo

Different governments in Nigeria and at different times had set out to curb the proliferation of light arms and weapons and had set up committees for that. So, the new pronouncement is not entirely new but with different approach which if hollistically implemented could solve the problem. On how these arms and weapons came into Nigeria is a question the Nigeria Customs, Immigration, the Nigeria Police Force, the Army and other Security agencies must give answers to it, an answer they urgently owe Nigerians.

Let Nigerians know that no single Nigerian is licensed to own prohibited weapons whicg are automatic riffles like AK47 and guns similar to it. What individuals are licensed to own are pump Actions and Dane Guns which are basically for hunting and personal protections.  In Nigeria, the only people licensed to handle prohibited riffles and other weapons are the Millitary, the Police, DSS and other government security agencies. The other groups with prohibited weapons though unlicensed are, Boko Haram, Bandits, Fulani Herdsmen, Armed Robbers, Millitants and Kidnappers. The Buhari' s Executive Order means that law abiding citizens with licensed to own Pump Actions and Dane Guns will have to return it immediately to the Police.

The Current security challenges facing Nigeria is not that of  citizens who are licensed to use Pump Action and Dane Guns miss using it, but that of Unlicenced groups like Fulani Herdsmen, Boko Haram, Bandits, Armed Robbers and Kidnappers. If we like, we may extend it to those licensed to use prohibited arms but are not using it effectively to the purpose they were assigned that duty. In fact, the security agencies who refused to do their work and those who refused to equip them well are part of out problems.

In trying to solve this problem, the Buhari' s administration says she wants to collect all arms in circulation, mostly from licensed arms users. The question now is, having known the history of the Fulani Herdsmen and Bandits who are occupational force out to kill citizens and take their land and properties, having known that the prohibited arms with them are not licensed, how do we collect it from them? How do we collect arms in the possession of Kidnappers, Millitants and armed robbers? The attempt by the government to confront forcefully these unscrupulous elements have seen resistance and more killings of our security agencies and citizens in places like, Katsina, Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara etc. How do we think we can solve this problem by taking away the hope of little resistance from the citizens?

The Nigeria Security challenges is heightened by the fact that the activities of Boko Haram, Bandits and most especially Fulani Herdsmen are not just criminal but also an attempt to wipe away indigenous people and take their land. This then brings to question the statement of Fulanization of Nigeria by Fulanis by the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo. The activities of Fulani Herdsmen in Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Adamawa, Kaduna and in Zamfara where they have turned to bandits goes a long way to confirm the assertion by President Obasanjo.

No matter how noble and well thought-out this idea of collecting Dane Guns and Pump Actions from citizens is, President Muhammadu Buhari should know that as a president of Fulani extraction, if the implementation of this policy leads to the overrun of Nigeria or part of Nigeria by the criminal elements from his tribe who he has not collected all the arms in their possession and may not be able to collect and  whose mission is well known, which is kill citizens and take their land, posterity will not judge him well.

If these policy is that of Buhari and he wants to implement it, it should be holistical. He should start from Fulani Herdsmen, Bandits, Boko Haram, Kidnappers, Millitants. Collect all the arms in their possession and citizens will gladly submit theirs. But if it is the planed Fulanization of Nigeria by collecting arms from citizens to enable Fulani Herdsmen and Bandits attack and Overrun just like what Al-Bashir did in Sudan with Janjaweeds, he should then know that he will fail.

Like he Buhari said, "the world is watching"

Armed Bandits Kill Five Vigilante Members In Katsina

...Members of a vigilante group popularly called “Yan sakai” went into a forest to engage the bandits in a fight.

The Katsina State Police has disclosed that a total of five persons who are members of the local vigilante have been killed by bandits in Faskari Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Isa, made the disclosure in a statement in Katsina State on Tuesday.
Gambo said that the killings occurred at Sabon-layi village of the local government area when members of a vigilante group popularly called “Yan sakai” went into a forest to engage the bandits in a fight.
According to him, the bandits killed the vigilante members during the exchange of fire.
He said that the police search team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area evacuated the corpses and discovered a bandits camp inside the forest that was abandoned by the criminals.
The police spokesman also disclosed that a manhunt has begun to arrest the bandits.

Insecurity: Fani-Kayode blasts FG for asking Obasanjo to withdraw comments on ‘Islamization, Fulanization of Nigeria’

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted after federal government asked ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to withdraw his recent comments which imputed ethno-religious motive to Boko Haram, ISWAP, terrorism in the country, as well as apologise to Nigerians.
DAILY POST had reported that Obasanjo on Saturday decried the high level of insecurity in Nigeria, stating that the Federal Government alone cannot tackle the menace.
He regretted that both Boko Haram and herdsmen acts of violence were not treated as they should at the beginning.
According to him, “They have both incubated and developed beyond what Nigeria can handle alone. They are now combined and internationalized with ISIS in control.
“It is no longer an issue of lack of education and lack of employment for our youths in Nigeria which it began as, it is now West African fulanization, African Islamization and global organized crimes of human trafficking, money laundering, drug trafficking, gun trafficking, illegal mining and regime change.”
But reacting in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, averred that such “indiscreet, deeply offensive and patently divisive comments are far below the status of an elder statesman”.
He added that, “It is particularly tragic that a man who fought to keep Nigeria one is the same one seeking to exploit the country’s fault lines to divide it in the twilight of his life”.
The minister stated that Boko Haram and ISWAP are terrorist organisations pure and simple, adding that they care little about ethnicity or religion when perpetrating their senseless killings and destruction.
“Since the Boko Haram crisis, which has been simmering under the watch of Obasanjo, boiled over in 2009, the terrorist organisation has killed more Muslims than adherents of any other religion.
“The terrorist group blown up more mosques than any other houses of worship and is not known to have spared any victim on the basis of their ethnicity.
“It is therefore absurd to say that Boko Haram and its ISWAP variant have as their goal the ‘Fulanisation and Islamisation’ of Nigeria, West Africa or Africa,” he said.
But in reaction, Fani-Kayode, in a tweet on Tuesday wrote: “LaiMohammed and @MBuhari should be the last to talk about Boko Haram or attack OBJ for exposing their Fulanisation and Islamisation agenda.
“The same Mohammed once said it was wrong to ban BH and the same Buhari once said an attack on BH was an attack on the north! Who is fooling who?”

We have strong evidence of politicians sponsoring banditry, kidnapping - COAS

- Tukur Buratai has said aggrieved politicians who lost in the last general elections are behind unrest in the country
- The Army boss said the military has strong evidence to support this but that the force is still very conscious

- Buratai also urged the politicians to shelve all other sentiments they may have and put national interest first
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has blamed the violence and banditry in the country on the embittered politicians who lost in the last general elections.

Buratai said this on Wednesday, May 15, during the visit paid to the Army by the House of Representatives committee at the military’s headquarters of the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya in Maiduguri, Bornu state, Channels TV reports.

“I want to believe and rightly so that what is going on in the northwest is a fall out of the just concluded general elections.
“There are several political interests; politicians in particular who lost in the election and because of their defeat, therefore they are trying to take revenge sponsoring some of those banditry activities and seeming conflicts between farmers and herders,” he said.

Daily Trust reports that the committee was in Borno state to lay wreaths for the fallen heroes of the force in Maiduguri.

The CAOS also said the committee’s visit is an opportunity to urge members of the House to advise the aggrieved politicians to place national interests before any other sentiments they may have.

The Lieutenant also said the Army has strong evidence the politicians are indeed behind the unrest in the country, but that the military is still very conscious.
“We have some strong evidence, but we are still being conscious, but the best thing is to advise these politicians who are aggrieved for no just cause and are inflicting serious injury and discomfort to individuals and the country,” he said.

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that as the presidential election tribunal began sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Wednesday, May 15, a team of security operatives surrounded the building.
The said team comprises officers of the
Nigerian Army, the police and Civil Defence as roads leading the police headquarters, the federal secretariat and ministry of finance were also blocked.

You have the right to search a policeman before he searches you —NPF

Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force says Nigerians have the right to search its men in select circumstances.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said this in a statement on Monday titled, ‘(Part 2) Tips For Safe And Cordial Conduct During An Arrest.’

The Police said if an officer is about to search a citizen or a property, that citizen has the right to first search the policeman in order to ensure that no evidence is planted.

According to the NPF, Nigerians also have the right to demand to know the reason for their arrest whenever an arrest is about to be made.

The Force spokesman further stated that in some instances, Nigerians have the right to demand that an arrest warrant is presented before allowing themselves to be apprehended.

The statement reads in part, “You may politely request that the officer be searched before searching you. Often times, this helps to allay fears that someone may be trying to plant incriminating items on you or implicate you in any other way.

“Demand to see the warrant of arrest where necessary (note, however, that not all invitation/arrest requires a warrant). As a matter of fact, under our laws, the Police have wide powers to arrest without warrant in many circumstances.

“Politely request that the officers allow you inform a trusted friend or a family member or a lawyer soon after your arrest in order to avoid unnecessary apprehension as to your whereabouts or safety.

“If the arrest requires the officer to conduct a search on you, demand to see the Search Warrant and comply with all legitimate instruction during the search (note that there are a lot of instances where a policeman can search you with or without warrant).”

The Force called on Nigerians never to resist arrest, even if it seems unjustified.

It also counselled Nigerians to never interfere in the arrest of a third party.

According to the statement, the Police may ask one to perform some tests such as walking in a straight line if a person is pulled over on suspicion of being drunk or high on drugs

How to end insurgency, by Buratai Gen. Buratai

Gen Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, yesterday listed measures for ending Boko Haram insurgency, terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

Gen. Buratai said a combined holistic approach by the countries of the Lake Chad was the surest way to defeat Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The army chief spoke at the Nigerian Military Cantonment in Jaji, Kaduna State, where he flagged-off the 2019 First Quarter Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Conference and Combat Arms Training Week.
He said the media and other stakeholders must stop glorifying criminals for the military and other security agencies to win the war against kidnapping, robbery and banditry in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Sokoto states.

See Also: Shit'te protesters cause Panic in NASS

Religious and traditional leaders, security analysts and the media, he claimed, portrayed armed robbers, kidnappers and ethnic militias as stronger than the military and other security agencies.
The army boss said: “The criminals and bandits are only as strong as the society paints or view them and further propagated by the media.”

He added: ”There is no doubt that we are engaged in asymmetric operations against terrorists side by side with the resurgence of kidnapping and armed banditry in the North West and the North Central.
“The strategy we used in the past to address such ugly trends in the South East and the South South must therefore be rejuvenated with new “out of the box” ideas to address the current security challenges.

“This has necessitated the launching of
Operation Harbin Kunama III . The concept of this operation will require the combat arms as well as all combat support services working in synergy with other security agencies, the traditional institutions and other stakeholders to get rid of criminal elements.

“We must ensure information flow that will be converted into actionable and timely intelligence for troops to take proactive measures and to support and drive targeted operations. It is important that commanders in the field relate with the society and other security agencies in their efforts to bring the high rate of kidnapping, acts of banditry and attacks on villages leading to killings in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and Katsina States to an end.
“At this point, I will seize this opportunity to caution the media and the general public not to glorify bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and ethnic militias to the extent that they are seen as stronger than the military and other security agencies. The criminals and bandits are only as strong as the society paints or views them and further propagated by the media.
“It is important to state that information and intelligence flows from the people and indeed from the press and the public. Such criminal activities are intelligence based and the people, are in this regard to provide timely information and clear identifications of the perpetrators.
“Undue publicity and praise singing of the bandits and other criminal elements would only motivate them to commit more criminal acts at the detriment of the society. Therefore, the press, the general public, security analysts and public commentators are advised to show more maturity and due diligence in this collective effort of ridding the country of criminals and criminalities.”
Gen. Buratai said Boko Haram had aligned with ISWAP to make northern Borno and the general area of the Lake Chad Basin an enclave straddling the four countries in the region.
To ensure the defeat of both Boko Haram and ISWAP, the fight requires a combine holistic approach by the countries of the Lake Chad Commission.

“That is why Operation Yancin Tafki was launched to effectively ensure the total destruction of the insurgents hibernating and operating from the ‘tumbuns’ with a view to crippling their ability and capability to wage any form of war.

“The operational successes recorded in this first quarter 2019 in this fight have further underscored the Nigerian Army’s resolve to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
“It is gratifying to note that the army within the first quarter 2019 has performed creditably well starting with the seizing of initiatives and turning the battle momentum against the Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast and rounding off with the professional manner with which the army supported the civil authorities, as part of our constitutional role, to ensure the successful conduct of the 2019 general elections.

“I must also acknowledge the resilience and doggedness of our troops in reversing the ugly trends that almost marred our concerted efforts in the North East.
“As you are all aware, Boko Haram has aligned with the ISWAP to make Northern Borno and the general area of the Lake Chad Basin an enclave straddling the four countries in the region.

“Thus, the fight requires a combined holistic approach by the countries of the Lake Chad Commission to ensure the total defeat of both Boko haram and ISWAP,” he stressed.

The conference is being attended by senior army officers, including serving and retired Generals. It is designed to appraise the activities of the army in the first quarter of 2019 and design strategy for future operations.

Military Bombs Bandits, Police Kill Nine Kidnappers on Abuja- Kaduna Highway

  • NAF loses airman in parachuting accident
  • I did not intend to discredit traditional rulers, says Dan-Ali
  • Group raises the alarm over N1bn ransom paid kidnappers
Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja
As security agencies ramped up pressure on bandits, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jet and helicopter gunship bombed their logistics base in Kagara Forest in Zamfara State, killing four bandits.
In the same vein, the Nigerian Police killed nine suspected kidnappers on the Abuja-Kaduna Highway and recovered a cache of arms.
However, NAF said it lost an airman, Corporal Meshak IIya Komo, during a parachuting accident.
A statement issued in Abuja said the incident occurred during a training exercise.
This is coming as the Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd), yesterday said his statement on Zamfara crisis was based on information available to the Ministry of Defence and not meant to discredit Zamfara State’s traditional rulers.
Also, a group of private security companies, ASIS International, has raised the alarm over payment of over N1billion to kidnappers on the Kaduna-Abuja Highway, which is deployed to purchase more arms by the kidnappers in an unending vicious cycle.
An update provided by NAF said it sustained air strikes on the hideouts of the bandits at a location within Kagara forest.
“In continuation of its sustained intensive air operations against their hideouts in Zamfara State and its environs, the Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA has destroyed some logistics stores belonging to the bandits at a location within Kagara forest.
“The operation was executed yesterday, following credible intelligence reports indicating that some of the bandits who had fled their camps as a result of NAF’s earlier air strikes had relocated some logistics items, including fuel, motorcycles and local arms making equipment, to another location within Kagara forest.
“Accordingly, the ATF dispatched a Mi-35 helicopter gunship, supported by an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, to attack the target”, it said.
NAF stated that the target area initially appeared uninhabited. However, as the helicopter approached, some of the bandits were seen emerging from under the shrubbery and running away from the area.
“The helicopter engaged the target recording successful hits on the logistics facility, which was engulfed in flames with thick black smoke seen. Some of the bandits, who fired at the aircraft, were taken out by the helicopter.
“Reports from independent sources, including local informants and village leaders around the general area, later confirmed that the logistics base was totally destroyed and four bandits killed as a result of the attack.”
In another development, the Police in a statement issued in Abuja, said it took out nine kidnappers on the Kaduna-Abuja Highway.
“The unrelenting efforts to root-out criminal elements terrorising commuters along Abuja – Kaduna expressway recorded additional successes with the recovery of six Ak47 Rifles, one Pump Action Gun, 1,206 rounds of Ak47 ammunition, Seven Magazines, 28 Cartridges and 158 expended shells by Police operatives attached to Operation Puff adder deployed to the area”, a statement signed by Force Spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, said.
The statement said the recovery, part of the ongoing “Operation Puff Adder” launched by the Police against kidnappers, followed a serious exchange of gun fire between the police operatives and a heavily armed notorious criminal gang at the Akilbu forest, off Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, which resulted in the death of nine members of the gang while two escaped with gunshot wounds.
“One of the police operatives, however, sustained gunshot wound and he is presently receiving treatment in a hospital. Effort is being intensified to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.
In another development, NAF said it lost an airman, Corporal Meshak IIya Komo, during a parachuting accident.
A statement issued in Abuja said the incident occurred during a training exercise.
“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is sad to announce the passing of one of its airmen, Corporal Meshach Iliya Komo, who died in Kaduna  in a parachuting accident during recurrency training.
“On behalf officers, airmen and airwomen of the NAF, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, commiserates with the family of the late airman over this irreparable loss. We pray that the Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest”, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Defence, has said the statement he made on Zamfara monarchs was not meant to discredit the traditional rulers but based on security report available to the ministry.
“The attention of the Honourable Minister of Defence was drawn to publications in some media organisations alleging that he accused some traditional rulers in the states affected by banditry of conniving with bandits.
“For the avoidance of doubt the statement was not meant to discredit our highly revered traditional rulers in the states affected.  However, the statement was meant to serve as a warning to some community leaders and their surrogates. This is based on security reports available to the Ministry of Defence and cannot be divulged to the public.
“The Ministry of Defence wants to once again assure all law abiding citizens of the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria towards protecting lives and properties of Nigerians”, a statement signed by the minister’s media aide, Col. Tukur Gusau, said
In the same vein, a group of private security professionals at a press conference in Abuja, has raised the alarm that over N1billion was paid to kidnappers, who in turn deploy it to purchase more arms to engage further in the deadly trade and called on government to devise more creative means to tackle the menace.
It urged government “to make its position on ransom payment very clear which should be in line with best global practice and any government official that goes contrary to this should be sanctioned appropriately.”
