Do you remember Alhaji Babagana Gingibe, former secretary to government of the federation? Yes, he is a Nigerian politician and was the running mate to M.K.O Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential elections that Abiola had a landslide victory under the umbrella of the social Democratic party, SDP. The election was annulled by the Gbadamosi Babangida military regime. Abiola was later killed in prison, but before he died in the cause of struggling to get back his mandate, Babagana Gingibe his running mate had abandoned him to pitch tent with the Sani Abacha junta who illegally executed Abiola(Major Hamza Almustapha, Sergeant Rogers).
In a recent interview, Alhaji Babagana Gingibe said he abandoned Abiola to pitch tent with Abacha for the sake of "National Interest". This recent outburst by Gingibe calls to question what Nigerian National Interest is, the need for it to be well defined, and an urgent need for a public debate at the National Assembly and by the people on what is the Nigerian National Interest.
Some times in 2014/2015 when the Nigeria Police Force had wanted to upgrade some of her personnel with higher qualifications, after the normal examination, interviews and shortlisting of qualified names, though marred with so much irregularities, a separate list appeared and it was termed "National Interest". This same thing is very rampant in the process to recruitment in all other uniformed organization in Nigeria and even in civil ministries.
It is very disheartening to know that in Nigeria , when any government wants to gag either the press or the public, it will be termed "National Interest" and I ask, in whose interest and to whose benefit? The Department of State Services(DSS) who is supposed to be an elite intelligence outfit that should be able to crack out why the activities Boko Haram, bandits and Kidnappers still persist in Nigeria and what should be done to curb it, recently said they have started, or are about to crack down on critics on social media, and to the DSS, it is done in National Interest.
Who defines National Interest in Nigeria and in whose interest and benefit is it?
