Hope rises for South-East, South-South exporters and importers

…as NIWA vows to make Onitsha River Port Functional

Hope rises for South-East and South-South importers and exporters,  just as Federal Government expects increase in revenue, as National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, vow to make Onitsha River Port functional.

NIWA also promised that it will do everything possible under the law to recover its properties and investments in wrong hands and channel them to revenue generation ventures for the Federal Government.

This was disclosed by the Managing Director of NIWA, Chief George Moghalu, during his visit to NIWA Area Office, Onitsha, Anambra State, as part of his nationwide tour of the investments and facilities of the federal government agency.

Chief Moghalu who also paid a courtesy call on the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, expressed displeasure that years since 2013 the Onitsha River Port was commissioned, it is yet to be made functional, thereby making importation, exportations activities, and revenue generation for government impossible.

“If Onitsha River Port is made functional, importers and exporters particularly from the South East and South-South geo-political zone, and the federal government will benefit through attendant economic and commercial activities and revenue generation for Nigerian government.”

“There is no gainsaying the fact that crime rate will also be drastically reduced due to availability of job opportunities that will come with it.

“The waterways transportation holds the potentials to reduce the pressure on Nigeria roads and infrastructure, it will reduce waste of man hour and the load in the Ports that are currently by Nigerians, particularly, Apapa Port, it is going to be a win-win situation for the people and the country.

“There is need for a critical national asset like Onitsha River Port to function optimally, apart from the fact that it must generate revenue, the project has economic impact on the immediate environment and national economy to make.

“I have seen a lot of developments on our right of ways, most of them are neither documented nor in our records and that is not good for our economy, they are revenues that are wasted, so we will do everything within the law to recover all NIWA investments and put them in proper use, so that revenues can be generated from them

“I want to warn those who are illegally occupying NIWA property that whoever builds on sand should also be aware that there is no how it will stand, certainly you will run into problems if you build on sand.

“If you are on NIWA property and your records are straight, your books are clean and you are doing the right things, I do not think you have anything to bother about, what am saying is you must document any property of NIWA you are occupying and pay the right fees.”

(A MUST KNOW): 10 Doles of Business Planning for all Businesses

Emergence Business Plans

A lot of people think business plans are just for startups, or to seek investment whether that be loans or investors. The truth is that business planning offers many benefits for every business.

A living, breathing business plan helps you grow. According to a survey conducted by the Paid Surveys Nigeria companies with a written business plan have 50% greater sales growth and 12% higher gross profit margins than those without one.

It should be pointed out what is meant by a living breathing plan. It's a plan that is live and you can adapt, update and add in 'what if' scenario's, i.e. it's a useful flexible tool that will help your business. After all there is no point in having a plan where you can't revise and add in the monthly revenue, sales figures and other key information to see whether you are on, above or below your projected (planned) targets. Any of these figures will have a bearing on how well your plan is being implemented.

So what are the top ten Business Plan benefits of having such a plan?

1. Priorities will be clearer. Business planning should connect the dots in your business so you get a better picture of where you are and what you want or need to do. Strategy is supposed to relate to tactics with strategic alignment. Does that show up in your plan? Do your sales connect to your sales and marketing expenses? Are your products right for your target market? Are you covering costs including long-term fixed costs, product development, and working capital needs as well? Take a step back and look at the larger picture.

2. Strategic Focus. Startups and businesses of all sizes need to focus on their special USP's (Unique Selling Points), their target markets, and their products or services tailored to match.

3. Set priorities. You can’t do everything. Business planning helps you keep track of the right things, and focus on the most important things. Allocate your time, effort, and resources to those tasks that are going to grow your business and make it a success.

4. Manage change. With a good planning process you should regularly review assumptions, track progress, and manage new developments so you can adjust as time progresses. This will also help you avoid costly mistakes.

5. Metrics. Put your performance indicators and numbers into the business plan where you can see them. Use your business planning tool to define and track the key metrics. It's all about key performance indicators (KPI's) and numbers (targets) whether that be; sales, expenses, leads, conversion rates, margins, stock. Define and track the key metrics on a monthly basis and review against the plan. Put your performance indicators and numbers into the business plan where you can see them.

6. Develop accountability. By having a planning process and tracking results you can review regularly – spot the good and bad (plan vs. actual) and adjust either yourself or by delegating. A good planning process sets expectations and tracks results. A well-run monthly plan review becomes an impromptu review of tasks and accomplishments and it also highlights issues to be addressed. Involve your team, they are your greatest asset.

7. Manage cash flow. Poor cash flow is nine times out of ten why businesses fail. Mitigate problems and adjust; profitability, products, purchasing assets, repaying debts, bad debtors, overstocking... to name a few. Good business planning connects the dots when it comes to cash flow. Sometimes just watching profits is enough. But when sales on account, physical products, purchasing assets, or repaying debts are involved, cash flow takes planning and management. Even profitable businesses suffer when slow-paying clients or too much inventory reduces cash flow. A business plan helps you see the problems and adjust accordingly. If you have cash flow issues these can be fixed by bringing in an expert (we have improve the cash flow programmes where we can help with this).

8. Strategic alignment. Make sure your day-to-day work fits in with your business tactics which in turn matches the strategy. Alignment equals greater success. Does your day-to-day work fit with your main business tactics? Do those tactics match your strategy? If so, you have strategic alignment. If not, the business planning will bring up the mismatches.

9. Milestones. Good business planning sets milestones (goals) you can work towards. These are key goals you want to achieve, like reaching sales targets, hiring staff, or opening a new location.

10. Ensure your success. Every great business needs a great business plan. A business plan will undoubtedly clarify your strategy and goals but the key to success is using your plan within your business on a constant basis building it in to your day to day activities and updating it as time progresses. All the statistics show that businesses with a comprehensive plan that is followed grow faster and make more profit. In summary ensure you have one!

If you want more take home pay, want more time (a planning process will through design will maximise your time efficiencies) or get the most from your team then this is the place to start.

Amadeus Capital-backed Travelstart has signed a deal to secure a 100% stake in Southern Africa’s Club Travel Group.

Travelstart continues its growth path in Africa in terms of a deal to exclusively acquire the Club Travel Group. The acquisition will boost Travelstart's offering by adding Club Travel’s established complementary corporate and franchise divisions, creating a formidable full-service African travel group.

Thebe and Travelstart will jointly invest in and own Club Travel Corporate, a level one B-BBEE rated division of Club Travel Group.
“The deal is a response to the changes in travel in Southern Africa as consumer and corporate travel markets increasingly favour technology-driven solutions. We are excited to partner up with the team from Travelstart,” said Jerry Mabena, CEO at Thebe Tourism.

The closing of the deal is subject to the approval of the Competition Commission.

Interesting : See what Mark Zuckerberg Founder Of Facebook Is Introducing Next

Mark Zuckerberg

"Today, Facebook is coming together with 27 organizations around the world to start the non-profit Libra Association and create a new currency called Libra.

Libra's mission is to create a simple global financial infrastructure that empowers billions of people around the world. It's powered by blockchain technology and the plan is to launch it in 2020. You can read more about the association here: https://libra.org

Being able to use mobile money can have an important positive impact on people's lives because you don't have to always carry cash, which can be insecure, or pay extra fees for transfers. This is especially important for people who don't have access to traditional banks or financial services. Right now, there are around a billion people who don't have a bank account but do have a mobile phone.

We aspire to make it easy for everyone to send and receive money just like you use our apps to instantly share messages and photos. To enable this, Facebook is also launching an independent subsidiary called Calibra that will build services that let you send, spend and save Libra -- starting with a digital wallet that will be available in WhatsApp and Messenger and as a standalone app next year.

Calibra will be regulated like other payment service providers. Any information you share with Calibra will be kept separate from information you share on Facebook. From the beginning, Calibra will let you send Libra to almost anyone with a smartphone at low to no cost. Over time, we hope to offer more services for people and businesses -- like paying bills with the push of a button, buying coffee with the scan of a code, or riding local public transit without needing to carry cash or a metro pass.

In addition to our efforts, many other companies will build their own services using Libra -- from payment companies like Mastercard, PayPal, PayU, Stripe and Visa, to popular services like Booking, eBay, Farfetch, Lyft, Spotify and Uber, to non-profits doing important work around financial inclusion like Kiva, Mercy Corps and Women's World Banking, to companies in the crypto space like Anchorage, Coinbase, Xapo, and Bison Trails. A number of leading Venture firms are also joining to help drive innovation on the Libra network. We're hoping to have over 100 cofounding members of the Libra Association by the time the network launches next year.

All of this is built on blockchain technology. It's decentralized -- meaning it's run by many different organizations instead of just one, making the system fairer overall. It's available to anyone with an internet connection and has low fees and costs. And it's secured by cryptography which helps keep your money safe.

This is an important part of our vision for a privacy-focused social platform -- where you can interact in all the ways you'd want privately, from messaging to secure payments.

Privacy and safety will be built into every step. For example, Calibra will have a dedicated team of experts in risk management focused on preventing people from using Calibra for fraudulent purposes. We'll provide fraud protection so if you lose your Libra coins, we'll offer refunds. We also believe it's important for people to have choices, so you'll have the option to use many other third-party wallets on the Libra network.

There's still a lot more to learn and do before Libra will be ready to officially launch. We know it's a major undertaking and responsibility -- and we're committed to getting this right. We've been working with policymakers and experts in areas like financial inclusion, economics, security, privacy and blockchain, and we'll continue listening to their feedback as we figure out the best way to move forward. We're thankful for their partnership, and for all the businesses, organizations, and academic institutions that are part of the Libra Association.

This is the beginning of an exciting journey and I'm looking forward to sharing more soon"

Forensic Report: We were not giving fair hearing - Oando

The embattled management of Oando Plc has accused the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of not giving the company fair hearing before dissolving its board of directors and appointing an interim management to oversee its operations. In its complaints to SEC, Oando claimed that the industry regulator did not give its management fair hearing in arriving at the decision. SEC had said that following the receipt of two petitions by the commission in 2017, investigations were conducted into the activities of Oando (a company listed on the Nigerian and Johannesburg Stock Exchanges).

The regulator said that certain infractions of securities and other relevant laws were observed. The commission added that it further engaged Deloitte & Touche to conduct a forensic audit on the activities of Oando. But in its reaction yesterday, Oando called on SEC for more engagements on the matter. In a press statement issued on its website, the oil firm said that “Oando is of the view that these alleged infractions and penalties are unsubstantiated, ultra vires, invalid and calculated to prejudice the business of the company. The company has not been given the opportunity to see, review and respond to the forensic audit report and so is unable to ascertain what findings (if any) were made in relation to the alleged infractions and defend itself accordingly before the SEC. “The company reserves its rights to take all legal steps to protect its business and assets whilst remaining committed to act in the best interests of all its shareholders. The severity of the penalties and the timing of the release have roused public curiosity as to the motive and the basis for the penalties,” it said.

Also, at a press conference in Lagos, the chief operating officer, Oando Energy Resource, Dr. Alex Irune, said: “We were not given a chance to review and respond to the outcome of the report. You do not sentence a person to death without giving him or her the chance to defend himself or herself.  In this instance we have been sentenced to death without knowing what our crime is or being given a chance to defend ourselves.  At the barest minimum, best practice requires that you give the person a chance of a fair hearing. We have not been accorded this opportunity.” Irune explained that when the company made the decision to drop its court case challenging the SEC’s decision to carry out a forensic audit, it was assured that they could trust the system for an independent investigation that would be fair and follow due process.

He reiterated that it was in the spirit of transparency, cooperation and full disclosure that they agreed to the forensic audit. “Echoes of Oando’s sentiments are resounding across the country with everyone wanting to know what exactly have the Oando management team done to warrant such steep penalties,” he said.

A source at Oando claimed the forensic audit report was ready and submitted by Deloitte & Touche as far back as December 2018 and queried why SEC decided to sit on it for six months without engaging the company where necessary. According to the source, “it also brings to mind the famous quote: ‘power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely’. Is this a case of abuse of power, or has someone been put under duress to release the report without any regard for due process? What are the details of the infractions as opposed to a summary and what are the associated penalties for each infraction according to the SEC rule book?”

On the damage done to the brand since the inception of the investigation, the chief finance officer of Oando, Olufemi Adeyemo said: “The damage cannot be quantified. We require credit to run our business and this has come at an extra cost, one that we would ordinarily not have incurred. “Despite these challenges, we have kept making milestones and running the business as usual. “As a nation, we must align our operations with global standards and like the developed world be deliberate in building homegrown businesses as opposed to tearing them down,” he said.

The company noted that “businesses such as Oando have contributed immensely to boosting the Nigerian capital market index since its inception as well as attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs) into the country. “The company’s contribution to the economy under the leadership of the said management which has been advised to resign cannot be overlooked,’’ it said. However, SEC said that as the apex regulator of the Nigerian capital market, it maintains its zero tolerance for market infractions and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the “fairness, integrity, efficiency and transparency of the securities market thereby strengthening investor

MTN Registers 20.35bn Shares With SEC

MTN Nigeria Communications yesterday said it has successfully completed the registration of 20.35 billion ordinary shares of two kobo each with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In a statement sent to LEADERSHIP, it said the completion of this process sets in motion the next steps in MTN’s intended listing by introduction on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

Speaking on the development, chief executive officer of MTN, Ferdi Moolman, said, “I am excited we have achieved another milestone in our listing process and want to thank the SEC and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for supporting us through the process. We have now begun to engage with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) to complete the listing process.”
Moolman stated recently that said the listing is part of its commitment to localisation in the markets in which it operates. “Our conversion to a Plc is a major step towards listing by introduction on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in the first half of 2019,” he said.
“It is a reaffirmation of our long-term commitment to expanding investment opportunities for Nigerians, in addition to providing everyday services to them. We look forward to continuing our engagement with the SEC and NSE to take forward the listing process.”
Also SEC said it has received an application from MTN Nigeria requesting for registration of its existing securities. Earlier, a statement by SEC said MTN Nigeria has applied for listing by introduction, preparatory to being listed and its shares trade-able on the floor of the NSE.
The application, the commission said is presently receiving attention.
MTN Group has appointed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and two others, to its board as part of preparations for the listing and after converting its Nigerian unit into a public company.
The listing on the NSE is a condition for settlement of a $1 billion regulatory fine three years ago by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), primary regulator of the nation’s telecoms sector.

For the year ended 2018, the company had announced the addition of 6 million new subscribers and a revenue of N965 billion. The results, which were announced in March 2019, showed that data revenue grew by 39.3 per cent while internet subscribers grew to 18.7 million.
MTN Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest providers of communications services, connecting over 60 million people in communities across the country with each other and the world.

Sustain my agricultural strides, Ogbeh urges successor

Ogbe, Emefiele commission N2bn Gino Tomatoes Kaduna plant

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, who is not sure of being reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, has urged his successor to sustain his agricultural strides, especially in the revitalisation and recapitalisation of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA). Ogbeh, who said this recently in Abuja, claimed that under his watch, the country has been able to scale up rice production. He said, “what we are doing today is a big leap forward because by the time we leave, there would be a new management, which we do not know who they would be. But the permanent secretary is here. “He and the administration will carry on with what we are doing now. I urge them to make sure that they drive this agenda to make sure that we have a strong BoA so that this country can continue to do great things. “We have done quite a bit. We are now number one in rice, cassava, yam and maize even though our maize is not selling because of aflatoxin and mycotoxin yam. We are also reviving the cottage industry.” In the same vein, Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, also claimed that agriculture significantly contributed in getting the country out of recession. Represented by a Director in the ministry, Janet Jiya, at the 2019 Seed Connect, Lokpobiri disclosed that by 2050, Nigeria would become the world’s fourth largest populated country, adding that key stakeholders should brainstorm on how to ensure food security. He said: “It will interest you to know that agriculture is a major growth and employment stimulating sector and forms the backbone of our economy. It contributed significantly to our exiting the recession that plagued this nation recently “By 2050, Nigeria will become the fourth largest population in the world, and we will be saddled with the challenge of feeding this huge number of people as well as creating decent jobs for them. “We must develop our agricultural sector to meet the impending challenge ahead of us, which is why this administration has introduced a policy direction tagged, ‘The Green Alternative: Agricultural Promotion Policy’. “It aims to work with all key stakeholders to build an agribusiness economy that can deliver sustained prosperity by meeting domestic food security goals, generating exports, and supporting sustainable income and job increase for our growing population,” he added.

Nigeria Saves U.S.$2.2 Billion From Refining Oil Abroad

By Kingsley Jeremiah

Abuja — The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday said $2.2 billion (N673.2 billion) had been saved from refining over 40 billion litres of crude oil abroad through the nation's Direct Sale and Direct Purchase (DSDP) scheme.
Speaking at the 2019 DSDP bid opening ceremony in Abuja, the corporation's Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, noted that since the introduction of the scheme in 2016, 29.5 million metric tons (39.6 billion litres) of petroleum products had been supplied on the platform, representing over 90 per cent of the national requirement.
Adopted to replace the Crude Oil Swap and the Offshore Processing Arrangement, the DSDP allows the NNPC to sell crude directly to off-shore refiners and get products in return.

"The scheme prides itself with a competitive pricing framework (lower than the PPPRA benchmark), which over the years has ensured a significant reduction in product demurrage cost in the range of 84 per cent and cost-saving of about $2.2 billion," he stated.

The GMD maintained that the project delivers value optimisation to the federation and provides a more efficient and cost-effective system as well as a better option to address the loopholes in previous schemes.
The NNPC boss submitted that 132 bids had been received for the 2019/2020 edition where over 14 cargoes of crude would be supplied to Europe and other countries for refining.
"We are looking at 14 cargoes per month at about 14 billion litres of products in a year," he added.

According to him, the DSDP tender board would engage reputable companies and ensure that the selection of off-takers was transparent and followed due process in deference to the provisions of the Public Procurement and Nigerian Content Acts.
Baru is optimistic that the process would establish sustainable partners through a robust mix of big international firms and strong Nigerian downstream establishments for supply reliability and local capacity development while leveraging the capacity and expertise of foreign associates.

Telecoms operators seek downward review of annual operating levy to 1%

Telecom Mast

Lagos – The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to downwardly review the Annual Operating Levy (AOL).

The Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, made the call on Wednesday in Lagos, during the ” Vanguard Economy Forum on Telecoms”.

The theme of the forum is ”Unlocking the Revenue and Growth Opportunities in the Telecoms Sector in a Changing Business Model and Digital Technology Environment: Role of Regulator, Operators and OTT Service Providers”.

Adebayo said that there was the need for a downward review of the AOL as the increasing usage of Over-The-Top (OTT) services by telecommunications customers was adversely impacting on revenue of the operators.

He said that the operating levy of 2.5 per cent should be reduced to one per cent, in the face of the reality on the ground in the industry.

Read Also: Mtn ready for listing on NSE

According to him, the 2.5 per cent is being deducted from the operator’s turnover, which he described as not fair enough.
”For example, let me say you sell N1 million, then you remove your expenses, you remove your tax, then you take your profit from it.

”What NCC does is to take the entire turnover, that is all income before tax and before expenses, then take 2.5 percent on it, which in itself is not a fair approach.

”This is because for you to achieve this N1 million, you have spent certain money, so, I feel you should actually take out your expenses before they apply the 2.5 per cent.
”So, what it then means is that the 2.5 per cent is actually additional expenses on the operators. it is high, because it is 2.5 per cent of annual turnover, not 2.5 per cent of profits. They need to consider a downward review, one per cent will be fair,” he said.
The ALTON chairman said that telecommunications companies were loosing money, hence, the urgent action to save them from further loss, due to activities of OTT providers who do not invest in infractructure.

He said that the OTT service providers utilised traditional Mobile Network Operator (MNO) infrastructure to offer social networks, voice and instant messaging services to retain users loyalty and drive stickiness.

Adebayo said that the providers had created large online communities and eventually attracted huge advertisement revenues, but were not being regulated by NCC

The services in Nigeria included Voice and Messaging service applications such as: WhatsApp, WeChat, Skype, Facebook, Viber and IMO among others.
He said that the MNOs had neither rights nor control over the OTT services, as their customers had the discretion to use the internet as desired.

According to him, telecom operators incur the costs; invest a lot on network infrastructure, in order to provide basic and innovative services to customer, while OTT players make the money.

”We recommend that OTT players enter into agreement with telecommunications companies for revenue share or payment of a kind of interconnect fee to operators.
”ALTON support models intended to engender revenue-share arrangements on advertisement-based OTT content. This co-operative model is being developed by operators and may necessitate special data bundles.

”We support innovative solutions by operators to minimise impact of disruptive platforms in the best interests of consumers and of industry sustainability,” he said. (NAN)

MTN ready for listing on NSE

MTN Nigeria Communications (MTN) on Wednesday announced that it had completed its conversion from a private company into a public company.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Mr Ferdi Moolman, said that the conversion to a public company was a legal requirement and key milestone in the preparatory process for MTN’s listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
According to him, the MTN’s intended listing on NSE will create a new telecoms asset class for investors and provide a wider group of Nigerians with a chance to participate in the MTN investment opportunity.

“Our conversion to a public company is a major step towards listing by introduction on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in the first half of 2019.

“It is a re-affirmation of our long-term commitment to expanding investment opportunities for Nigerians, in addition to providing everyday services to them.
“We look forward to continuing our engagement with the SEC and NSE to take forward the listing process,” he said in a statement.
In March, MTN announced its earnings for the 2018 financial year, recording growth above inflation in full service revenue (17.2 per cent) and the addition of nearly six million new subscribers to the network.
The company announced Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) of N453.1 billion and expanded EBITDA margins to 43.6% (excluding the CBN resolution amount).
The company added 4.5 million active data customers during the year, delivering data revenue growth of 39.3% and expanding to 18.7 million the number of people that it connects to the possibilities that the internet provides.

“Nigeria is one of the largest markets within MTN’s portfolio and central to its growth strategy”, Moolman said.
“The upcoming listing is a key milestone for the MTN group and is part of its commitment to localisation in the markets in which it operates.

Banks’ Lending Drops By N1trn In Q1

By BUKOLA IDOWU

LEADERSHIP - In spite of the improvements in business activities as well as the recovery recorded by the Nigerian economy, banks have continued to be wary of lending to the public as the loan books of most banks declined in the first three months of 2018.
While the total loan books of eleven banks stood at N15.385 trillion by December 2017, it dropped to N14.346 trillion in the first quarter of this year, a contraction of about 6.75 per cent.
The total banking sector credit to the public, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), stood at N15.7 trillion as at December 2017.
The Nigerian economy has gradually moved out of recession with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recording positive growth. Although GDP growth in the first quarter had slowed by 13.4 per cent, it remained positive as GDP grew by 1.94 per cent.
Inflation rate has also been on a steady decline, dropping to more than a two year low of 12.4 per cent in April this year. Business confidence in the country has also improved from a negative, which it had been since 2016, to a positive of 17.7 per cent, rising alongside oil prices.
The price of crude oil, which is a major revenue source for the country, has been on the rise in recent times, selling at $74 per barrel and giving a boost to the foreign exchange market. The Nigerian foreign exchange market has witnessed stability on the back of the rising oil price as well as increased inflow from the Investors’ and Exporters’ window.
However, of the 11 banks, comprising Access Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa, FBN Holdings, Sterling Bank, Ecobank, Stanbic IBTC, Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank and Union Bank, only one recorded an increase in its loan book.
Sterling Bank, which had a loan book of N589.073 billion at the end of the 2017 financial year, increased its lending by 1.95 per cent to N609.785 billion in the first three months of the year.
On the contrary, the loan book of Zenith Bank dropped by 25.2 per cent from N2.349 trillion by December 31, 2017, to N1.757 per cent at the end of the first quarter of 2018.
Analysts at FSDH Merchant Bank had earlier in the year projected that banking sector credit would rise by N1 trillion or 6.34 per cent to N16.7 trillion in 2018 from the 2017 figure of N15.7 trillion.
According to them, the manufacturing sector is expected to attract the highest credit as challenges faced by the agricultural sector would make it difficult for it to attract more credit from the banks while uncertainties about the fuel subsidy may constrain lending to the petroleum sector.
Analysts note that the high interest rate being charged by banks may also be a deterrent to lending, as lending rates released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) revealed that some deposit money banks (DMBs) in the country charge their customers as high as 49.50 percent per annum as interest rate.
The Monetary Policy Committee of the CBN had held benchmark lending rates at 14 per cent at the end of its last meeting in May, citing delay in the 2018 budget and upcoming election. The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, said although the Committee considered cutting down on the MPR to stimulate aggregate demand through lower cost of credit, members were worried the outcome would likely exacerbate inflationary pressures.
According to him, lowering the benchmark lending rate may not necessarily translate into lowering market lending rate on account of high cost of doing business, but may lead to higher pressures on the exchange rate as the demand for foreign exchange increases, pushing real rate into negative territory.

Ghana, Others To Import Petroleum Products From Dangote Refinery

By OLUSHOLA BELLO

LEADERSHIP - Ahead of the completion of the Dangote Oil Refinery, petroleum importing African nations and Bulk Oil Distributors based in Ghana have expressed eagerness to patronize the Nigerian Refinery when production starts.
The oil buyers said arrangements have been put in place to import petroleum products from the world’s largest single-train refinery, situated, Lekki, Lagos state owned by the foremost industrialist.
Hints of eager expectation and hopes on the Dangote Refinery were revealed at this year’s Ghanaian International Petroleum conference (Ghipcon 2018) which held in Accra, Ghana.
Participants at the international Conference as well as oil distributors and marketers from various countries were eager to know how they could key in for supplies from the 650,000 barrel per day refinery, that is preparing to take the continent by storm.
The Ghanaian government expressed the view that dealing with Dangote refinery for petroleum import would be a better business for African nations than depending on the international market for the supply of refined petroleum products, “we will rather purchase from the Dangote Refinery due to the proximity of the refinery to Ghana and other neighbours.
President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was represented by Vice-President Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia, said African nations are anxiously waiting for Dangote Refinery.
During their visit to the Dangote oil exhibition stand, the Ghanaian Vice-President and the Minister of Energy Hon. Boakye Agyarko were amazed at the size of the project and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work being done at the refinery as explained to them by Engr. Babajide Soyode, the Technical Adviser to the President of Dangote Group on Refinery and Petrochemical matters, who led the Dangote Refinery team to the Conference.
Vice President Bawumia commended Alhaji Aliko Dangote on the initiative which is 100% privately funded and expressed the hope that Ghana would stand to benefit from the project when it is completed.
On his part the Minister of Energy Hon. Agyarko said it would take a big heart to embark on such a gigantic project and lauded the efforts of Africa’s richest man of in trying to meet the needs of the people.

FG Tackles Estimated Billings, Provides N37bn Grant To DisCos

By FESTUS OKOROMADU , ISAIAH BENJAMIN
LEADERSHIP - The federal government said it has taken advantage of the new Meter Asset Provider (MAP) regulations to give a grant of N37billion to a private sector operator to supply meters to interested Distribution Companies (DisCos).
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this at the 28th monthly meeting of power stakeholders in Kaduna, yesterday.
The minister also urged Power Distribution Companies (DisCos) to access the N37 billion fund as part of government’s measures towards addressing challenges associated with the estimated billing system.
The meeting, hosted by Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company at the Mando transmission substation, had in attendance representatives of government power agencies and private operators across the value chain of Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
The minister, who did not mention the name of the company, said the federal government provided the fund based on the demand for meters, given the increasing power generation, transmission and distribution in the country.
He said, “As power supply continues to increase in generation, transmission and distribution, the demand for meters will increase because more power supply and consumption will likely result in increased bills.’’
Meanwhile, the minister said the federal government is committed to resolving the challenges posed by estimated billings in the power sector within the shortest time.
He noted that estimated billings has become a major cause of distrust and conflict between consumers and distribution companies (DisCos), stressing that provision of meters are the easiest way to build the bridge of trust.
Fashola stated this yesterday while addressing industry stakeholders at the 28 monthly power sector operators meeting in Kaduna. He disclosed that every DisCo is affected by the issue stressing that every DisCo needs to respond by providing meters quickly and seeking to end estimated billing, which he explained are subjective, discretionary, and prone to abuse.
The minister stated that the bigger and compelling issue currently facing the electricity industry is that of estimated billing and lack of meters.
“Meter supply has become the big issue of the moment that consumers want us to resolve,” he said. As a Government, we hear them loudly and clearly, and as service providers, we hope that you can hear them too. As power supply continues to increase in Generation, Transmission and Distribution, the demand for meters will increase because more power supply and consumption will likely result in increased bills.
“Estimated billings in these circumstance will become a major cause of distrust and conflict between consumers and DisCos, and meters are the easiest way to build the bridge of trust.”
Speaking on efforts being made to address the issue, Fashola said, “On the Executive side of Government, we are responding by taking advantage of the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Regulations to deploy a fund of N37bn towards supplying meters through private sector.
“I urge all DisCos who have not taken benefit of this opportunity to quickly do so, or make their own funding arrangements to contract their own meter providers to supply and install meters.
“On the Legislative side of Government, there is a clear intention to intervene by Legislation, he said.
The minister also emphasised government’s commitment to ensuring better service delivery. He said: “Our commitment to better service delivery by improving infrastructure, as mandated by President Buhari, continues.
“Yesterday, I visited the historic city of Zaria to commission the 60MVA Transformer added to the Zaria 132 KV substation to increase the transformer capacity from 140 MVA to 200 MVA.
“This will improve service to customers of Kaduna DisCo, our host, in places like Zaria City, Sabon Gari, Samaru, Giwa, Yakawada, Tudun Wada, Markafi, to mention a few. This morning, I also visited the Power House 132 KV Transmission Substation in Kaduna to commission 2 X 60 MVA Transformers to increase the transformer capacity from 190 MVA to 240 MVA.
“This will hopefully improve service of Kaduna DisCo to customers in places like Kaduna Township, Rigasa, Kakuri, Rigachukwu, Chikun, Sabon Tasha, to mention a few. I must commend TCN for these interventions that are being undertaken nationwide.’’
On his part, the managing director of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Engr Garba Haruna said his company has improved its services to consumers.
“As you can see in Kaduna we have a minimum supply of 10 hours to 12 hours in some parts of Kaduna we have 24 hour of electricity supply but with this commissioning it will improve,” he said.
He expressed willingness to continue to support the meeting.
Earlier the Minister inaugurated three power substations with 60MVA Transformer that added to the Zaria 132 KV substation to increase the transformer capacity from 140 MVA to 200 MVA. “The effort will improve service to customers of Kaduna DisCo, our host, in places like Zaria City, Sabon Gari, Samaru, Giwa, Yakawada, Tudun Wada, Markafi, to mention a few.“
The Minister also inaugurated the Power House 132/33KV Transmission Substation in Kakuri, Kaduna city, where the 2 X 60 MVA Transformers that had been upgraded from 190 MVA to 240 MVA.
He equally commissioned the 150MVA, 330/132KV transformer at the Mando Station.
The upgraded sub-stations would improve service of Kaduna DisCo to customers in places like Kaduna Township, Rigasa, Kakuri, Rigachukwu, Chikun, Sabon Tasha, among other communities, he said.

Microsoft Nigeria, First Bank collaborate to bolster SMEs

Theeaglesvoice.blogspot.com - Leave a comment
Microsoft and First Bank of Nigeria will collaborate to provide small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with an array of resources and support, including business networks, technology services and SMB-targeted products. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Microsoft and the financial institution will also focus on increasing technology adoption among small firms, reports said.
During the MoU signing ceremony, held a Microsoft’s Nigeria office in Lagos, First Bank Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director Gbenga Shobo said, “We are committed to the development of SMEs and ensuring their sustained business growth.”
“Initially, our work with SMEs was strongly focused on bringing them online to boost their productivity and competitiveness,” added Microsoft Nigeria General Manager Akin Banuso. “Over the years, as we have worked with and learned from SMEs, our focus has evolved to provide them with a more holistic and game-changing offering, which is: access to technology, markets, finance, information, skills and services.”
He continued, “For SMEs, this means empowering them to digitally transform by using technology to be more productive, competitive and in a position to scale across borders. We can help them do this by providing affordable devices, cloud-based software at pay-as-you-go models, anytime-anywhere access, and relevant training and content on how to best apply technology to their business.”
Microsoft’s partnership with the bank is the latest move by the technology conglomerate to strengthen its position in the small business services market.
Last month, Microsoft teamed up with KPMG and Commonwealth Bank of Australia to launch Wiise, a small business accounting and financial management startup in Australia to rival industry leader Xero. Last year, the company partnered with software management company Flexera to help SMBs manage their software supply chains and optimize SaaS use.

Facebook users can now lip-sync favourite songs

Facebook users can now lip-sync favourite songs

           By Eje peter
Facebook users will be able to lip-sync live to their favorite tunes as the social media behemoth on Tuesday unveiled its first personalized features as part of licensing deals with music labels.
Under the new lip-sync function, Facebook users will be able to select hit songs to share on their live streams. As the music plays, those tuning in will see their friends sing, dance or do whatever else the music inspires them to do.
Users can also post descriptions of their lip-sync performances. The live feed will clearly state the song and the artist and give viewers a chance to click and follow the musician on Facebook.
Dubbed Lip Sync Live, the feature looks set to be a competitor to Musical.ly, the popular karaoke-inspired app that originated in China.
Facebook also said it would allow users to incorporate licensed music to accompany video posts, initially in select markets and eventually around the world.Announcing the new music projects in a blog post, Facebook — which also owns Instagram — said that it planned more options in the future.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to work with the music industry to create new ways for people to connect and express themselves through music across our family of apps,” a Facebook statement said.
The new features come several months after the company sealed licensing agreements with the three major music label conglomerates.
Despite reaching two billion people, Facebook historically has been relatively inactive on music as rivals such as Apple and Google invest heavily in the fast-growing streaming sector.
While music including homemade videos is omnipresent on Facebook, the company regularly takes down embedded content that is copyrighted. The licensing agreements will help Facebook users include music more seamlessly.
