POTENTIAL CONTENDERS SERIES PART III
In 2017, a 39 years old Emmanuel Macron of France felt it was time for the youths in France to take over government and governance in that country. Macron an investment banker had before then not held any political office but wanted both political and social change favorable to the youths. Though he was later appointed an assistant to the then France president, Hollande and further made a minister, his stay as a minister did not last because of his inability to effect changes he felt will touch the ordinary France citizens as a labor minister. Emmanuel Macron was not a member of the two major political parties in France but pursued his dreams of becoming France president through the will power of the French youths. He was not known politically but became the President through the strength of the youths.
From 1999 till date, Nigeria in general and Cross River State in particular has been ruled by names and faces that have existed from independence till date or those that have hang unto power since 1999 at different levels and are not ready to quit soon. The probability or tendency that this will change soon, is far from reality. The situation is made worst by the atitude of our youths who are very comfortable carrying the handbags of these old guards and killing for them in the name of politics. It is well known that poverty have crippled the thinking ability of our youths, it has silenced the ability of our youths to say no to crumps that falls from the table of our old guards. It is the youths that now fights fellow youths for their aged masters to perpetually remain in government and keep them perpetually as boys even when some have grown pass the age of still answering boy. Pride of refusing to support good projects started by other youths is another major problem.
Someone told me that talking about 2023 is still too early and I answered that, for the money bags, is still too early, but for the youths, if Christ tarries, this is the time to start our planning. When shall the future of this country and Cross River, the youths rightfully take their right? Why have we been cheating ourselves? Don't we know that you can only draw very close to government when people of your age bracket are in government? Why are we so comfortable answering boys and collecting peanuts to either vote or rig elections for our old guards every four years? Nnmadi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macaulay, Tafawa Belawa, Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu Gowon were all in their 20ties and 30ties when they became heads of states and ministers. Why are we comfortable becoming PA to PA of PA and will begin to applaud when one or two favored youths are appointed into positions that are rightfully ours?
Nigeria and Cross River State Youths, what is this that we have done to ourselves? We may not have the money like them, but we have the numerical strength, we may not be stakeholders in their party to determine what happens, but we can adopt a party with our strenght and effect changes. It is a young female student in Sudan that have led the political revolution in that country that saw to the sacking of the president.
My dear Cross River State Youths, we can do it, we have the number, the only thing we need now is the will and corporation of all. Let a youth become the governor of Cross River State in 2023.
