If by God's grace I'm elected as a policymaker representing the good people of Ogoja/Yala federal constituency under the platform of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, one bill that shall be sponsored by me; or an act that shall be promulgated would be an act retraining or prohibiting Rural/urban drift and modern-day slavery (servitude/ servitors).
Rural/urban and servitude are prevalent nowadays as compared to olden days. In fact, it's commonplace that most of our able young men drift to urban( towns and cities) in search of greener pastures without prerequisite knowledge, i.e the skills; technical knowhow or having a decent qualification which is essential in getting a good job. The aforesaid is largely due to lack of education and enlightenment. At the long run, they ended up in servitude without proper or due remuneration. Their wages or emoluments are not commensurate to the work done.
In the light of the above, it's common in northern Cross River where boys and girls move in drove to Iseyin, Ijebu-ode, Ibadan, Akure, Ogun, Bini etc to work in cocoa plantation, plantain and suger plantation and logging of woods (timber) in thick virgin forests. Some girls even elope with these boys. During this months (12) of hard labour, some indulge in illicit consumption of drugs such as tramadol, codine, Bolivian marching powder, California cornflake and other stimulants. This drugs sometimes causes them to be psychologically divergent.
In 2010, about 75 of these boys and girls died in a fatal auto crash during the yuletide when they were returning home in 911 Mercedes truck.
Article 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 217 A(III) of 10 December 1948 expressly states that :no one shall be held in servitude or slavery; slavery and slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. This declaration is backed up by African (BANJUL) Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights as adopted 27 June 1981, AOU Doc. CAB/LEG/67/3rev.5,21I.L.M.58(1982), entered into force 21 October 1986).
To strengthen and make positive effect towards achieving the goals of the said act (bill), skills acquisition centres shall be setup to empower these manpower. They shall be encouraged to acquired basic skill and education. They shall be encouraged to go into commercial and subsistence farming (farming with swags). Corporate society shall be established to provide soft loans for easy access to funds. The services of Agriculture Extension Officers(AEO) shall be required to aid these people with modern techniques of cultivation.
At the end of the day, this monstrous menace would've been drastically tamed and pruned through political audacity.
Relax and wait for the next item.
