IN GOD WE TRUST : WITH SUPER EAGLES WE STAND... Ogar Emmanuel Oko

Today being Friday is the day that will determine the progress of Nigeria's Super Eagles in the ongoing World Cup tournament as the Eagles gets set to lock horns with their self-motivated and little known Icelanders counterpart.

The mundial will settle down in history as the soccer fiesta where the Super Eagles participated with the best kits and fashionable ceremonial attire. They're more of fashionistas than footballers.

This year's event is quite memorable with lot of surprises. Unforgettable. The hopes of many football loving Nigerians were raised and shattered. Good will messages and best wishes were flooding their darling Eagles' camp both from local and international sphere.

Having missed the penultimate tournament hosted by Brazil, but fought effortlessly to qualify for the ongoing, not a few Nigerians believed in the ability of the star studded Eagles of bringing the highly curveted trophy home for the very first time in history.
That's the wishes of every Nigerians. Even Marcus, the prognosticator forecasted the upward advancement of the Eagles. Disappointing as it was, the Eagles lost to the ravaging Croatians. A negation of Marcus' prediction.

Since the end of the first match, the love and administration of many folks have diminished drastically. Many have totally withdrew their support from the Eagles. Everyone has become a coach — manager and pundit.
It's no news that the Mikel led Eagles previous performances have been described as lacklustre and abysmal by disgruntled Nigerians. Many including this writer have faulted the formation of the Eagles, in that certain players were fielded in wrong positions: Mikel and Iwobi for exempli gratia.

With yesterday's result between the ruthless Croatians and the hapless Argentines, fans can now understand that the Eagles played against the best team in the group. Though, as professed winners, we shouldn't take solace in the defeat of Argentina — rather, we should have succour in today's match with the highest hope of winning it convincingly.

If we beat Iceland today and get a win or draw against Argentina in our last match, we're sure of qualifying to the next round inasmuch as the Icelanders are beaten(or drawn) by the Croatians.

Come to think of it, should we withdraw our support from the Eagles just because of their previous ill-fated defeat? And patriots will yell, no!
If you and I loves the Eagles, we won't retreat or surround even if the squad isn't doing well. We'll win with them; draw with them and lose with them.

I like the football philosophy of Bill Shankly to every supporter. He was a Scottish manager of Liverpool fc of England from 1959 - 1974. That was the golden era of Liverpool.

He says, "if you can't support us when we lose or draw, don't support us when we win".
Up Super Eagles!
