A lesson in political leadership: The OKADIGBO pyramid(Alphonsus Ogar Eba)

May 22,2019.

By Egbara Emmanuel.

Anyone who knows Hon.Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba,the Cross River State Director General of Due process and Price intelligence Bureau  would certainly concede that he is a political bulldozer and a Grass Root mobilizer.

Hon.Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba  is  a great visionary, who exercised a range of leadership and behavioral abilities to bring about profound transformation in his office as the Director General of Due process and Price intelligence Bureau in Cross River State.

He is a leader who provided the necessary inspirational fuel during the last election. He demonstrated some key leadership behaviors which make him a great leader.

After observing this Guru called Hon.Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba from both far and near, I have observed in him what made his generation develop a liking and respect for his “political and social  personality”..

For students of political leadership like me, I put this together believing that somehow, we will get a lesson or two from this political pyramid.

He is  a known political voice in Yala before his appointment under Governor Ayade administration , Eba immediately launched his ideas and wide scope of political, intellectual innitiatives . During these few years as the Director General of Due process and Price intelligence Bureau, he really endeared himself to Cross Riverians.

That his attitude of focus, hardwork, tolerance, obedience has catapulted him this far and he is now a house hold name in Cross River State political environment.

Good works not enough; play serious politics,
After the Director General Eba realised he was in the same camp with a motley crowd; there needed to be some separation. He started building and developing his own crowd and quickly set himself apart from mainstream of petty politics.

Eba understood the relevance of youth in the demographic segmentation of Cross River politics. He foresaw the emergence of this sector of our demography and quickly exploited this. The consequence of that is his emergence as political bulldozer of our time.

“You can’t bend a dry crayfish”. No one, while running forward, keeps looking at his back, He will definitely fall. The youth carry the vision while old people will keep reminding you of the past. If Eba had remained with the Crowd, the achievement in his office and the general political atmosphere would not have surpassed what was witnessed in some offices.

When people, out of myopia, come down heavily on Eba for been generous and having wealth, I often laugh. To them I say, go and do just a percentage of what Eba has done without money. How he did it will be explained later, but Eba understood very well the role of money in present-day Nigeria.

With his background as a lawyer , Eba had an already-built trusted network in the sector. He knew those to trust with influence and money; many of these people later proved to be worthy investments to his current political pyramid.

Eba is not in fact just a political leader; he is also a hero to many  by being a perfect example of leadership.

Dr. Betta Edu, a Maestro Par Excellence - Chief Angela

April 25, 2019

In recent time, Dr. Betta Edu, the pioneer DG, Cross River State Primary Health Development  Agency (CRSPHCDA) has become a buzzword in the media. This is not unconnected with the leading role she is currently playing in the primary health sub-sector - both in the state and at the Federal level.

A humble, intelligent and beautiful lady who can be unmistakably referred to as model par excellence, last month assumed a national role - Deputy Chair of CEO Forum of all Nigerian primary healthcare agencies.

No sooner had she assumed the position than she co-launched a new health scheme - RMNCAH+N with the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja. These giant strides constitute major milestones in her career as a health practitioner.

Describing her in a speech during a session with her political ally,  who pleaded for anonymity, Chief Angela compared her (Dr. Betta Edu) to the biblical virtuous woman, stating that if everyone in leadership position can tread her footprint, then the society will become a better place to live.

The SSA to the Governor on Mobilization and Enlightenment - Chief Angela Odey further commended her humble  and humane gesture, in dealing with issues and people, wondering how a woman of her calibre -  considering her position, beauty and class, could be so down to earth.

"If there is any young woman I am proud of in Cross River State, it is Dr. Betta Edu. The more I get to know her, the more my admiration  of her continues to amplify. To me, she is if all health practitioners, a maestro par excellence. Her ingenuity is gradually unfolding as her fame has cascaded beyond the People's Paradise, Cross River State," she said.

Praising her exquisiteness and charisma, Chief Angela said: "The aura of her beauty and charismatic nature keep me wondering how completely perfect God has, in his creative ability, favoured her. You can't fault her in words and character - she is indeed, an icon in the real sense of it."

She noted that the good works of Governor Ben Ayade has extended beyond the frontiers of Africa as the World Health Organization recently commended the effort of the Governor and Dr. Betta Edu on the ongoing recruitment of primary health workers in the state. "It is awesome to know that even the international community is beginning to acknowledge the good works of the digital governor, His Excellency, San. Professor Ben Ayade. The World Health Organization has commended his effort and that of the 'Iron Lady,' Dr. Beta Edu on the ingoing recruitment of health workers."

In her final remark, she tasked young women to emulate the DG by imbibing the the ideals of her virtues, adding that she had not found herself at the top by accident. "I must tell you the truth as brothers and sisters, the ladder to the top is not easy to climb; it is not a bed of roses as some of us think - what you call luck happens when opportunity coincides with ability. This implies that you have a cost to pay. Dr. Betta is at the top today because she has paid the price. Go ahead and pay your price."

Encounter with Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba: A case study in virtue and patriotism. (The Making of a Moral Leader)

(The Making of a Moral Leader)

April 18,2019

Patriotic leadership raises the sights of the people, it gets them to believe in the course as a cause greater than themselves, as something worth fighting for, and if need be, worth dying for. They see leadership as an opportunity to actually lead, and understand the imperative of building bridges across ethnic and religious divides, connecting us across walls of religious and primordial sentiments.

It is fairly reasoned that the challenges and solutions of leadership are inside leaders. This view stands in line with the fact that natural leaders don’t just do things, they change things.

“People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly powerful bring others together.”

At every turn in history, iconic men and women; those exceptional people with unprecedented breadth of service to humanity, the icons whose trajectory stand them apart from the packs, appear like the comet to beautify our world.

Great achievers and products of inspiration, such rare breeds of men and women do not appear from the abyss of frivolity, vainglory or wishful thinking. Inspiration and courage gave birth to them while patriotism and passion for hard work nurtured them into limelight and ingrained them into our hearts.

Indeed, those pantheons do not come often. Only few nations are blessed with them , Cross River State and Nigeria are privileged to be among.

An accomplished scholar, moral colossus, a legal guru, ethical titan, die-hard nationalist, pacifist and dogged fighter for a just and decent society by name Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba has touched lives ,a philanthropist of repute.

"The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." Eba is an encyclopedia of an effective leader.

"Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results, not attributes."

He is a leader with a heart for his people. He view people as the bottom line, not as a tool to get to the bottom line.

There is so much the Nigerian political class has to learn from leaders like Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba. One of the most important lessons is responsiveness.

Timely response to emergencies and the needs of the people generally is a true mark of great leadership.

Eba has gone a long way to restore public confidence . He will always be a rewarding study in Cross River State and beyond.

These leadership-rung indicators have contributed in no small measure to his enviable qualities, relevant experience, expansive capacity, resource capabilities and suitability.

Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flow charts. It is about one life influencing another and Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba has been a reference point.

Reuben Abati's view about Atiku

Hear Reuben Abati:

“Atiku is cosmopolitan. He has since leaving office in 2007, opened himself up to ideas, and the modernist world. Significantly, he has not branded himself as a cattle-rearer. He has investments in education, agriculture, maritime and other sectors of the economy. There has been no complaint about his emergence as PDP Presidential candidate from Corporate Nigeria – that wing of Nigerian politics populated by deluded egoists who think money is everything- and that is understandable. Corporate Nigeria knows that its leaders can have a comfortable conversation with Atiku because he has a working and practical knowledge of how the Nigerian economy works. He once headed the country’s Economic Management Team and he superintended over Nigeria’s privatization process. Nobody will have to speak to him in Hausa language to explain the meaning of simple economic terms.”

Ouch!!
