FOR THE RECORDS: MY 2017 PILGRIMAGE EXPERIENCE IN ISRAEL

The Year 2017 that just passed was remarkable to me in many ways. I started the year with lots of hope and aspiration, which is the ideal thing to do but it never occurred to me that the unimaginable was lurking around to make the year memorable for me. God proved Himself and through the instrumentality of the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), Dr Tor Uja, who graciously approved a slot for my online news portal, www.theleaderng.com, when the head of the media, Mr Celestine Ogugua, presented it alongside other online platforms to cover the pilgrimage for the December 12-21, 2017 batch to Israel. This for me was a notable recognition for our unrelenting coverage of activities of the NCPC.

After going through the clearance processes and participating in an enlightenment programme ahead of the date of departure, I was still wondering within myself, about the reality of truly traveling beyond the shores of Nigeria to Israel for pilgrimage and indeed see for myself firsthand all I have been taught by my Sunday School teachers right from my childhood days to my adulthood as a teacher of the Word of God myself today. I have always know that one day I will go for pilgrimage, but I never knew it will happen in such a surprising way. I give God the glory for the first privilege and the opportunity to experience God and His Christ in such a profound practical manner.

I must purse here to commend the NCPC team for making the processes for the trip a seamless one, from passport, to visa, to clearance at the airport to boarding and our final arrival at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel.

We left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 12:21am of December 12, 2017, and after over five hours airborne, we arrived the Turkey Antaiya Havalimani Dis Hatlar International Airport for thorough security checks. After boarding, we departed the Turkey airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, where we went through another security check and got a nine days stay permit. It was a smooth journey afterall.

At the airport we were grouped in batches, and each group has a coaster bus attached to it and a tour guide. I was in Bus 3, comprising of FCT pilgrims. Our tour guide was an amazing young man called, Oshri El-Markias hired by Tailor Made Tours in Israel. For the nine days he stayed with us, we became friends and family. He was a good man, and everyone seems to love him, his humorous nature, deep knowledge of the various holy sites we had the opportunity to visit and his humble way of addressing issues. During our stay we were lodge in three hotels in three different cities. We were first lodged in Ararat Hotel in Bethlehem, Palestine on arrival, then in Nazareth Plaza Hotel in Nazareth and before departure we lodged finally in Jerusalem Gold Hotel in Jerusalem the capital city of Israel. The best hotel for me remains, Nazareth Plaza Hotel.

I fell in love with the serene, dust-free, noise-free and exquisite buildings from day one. And as we traverse the various cities where holy sites were located, it dawned on me that Israel is indeed a holy nation. The infrastructure, electricity, roads, technology, transportation system, agriculture, and organization all caught my fancy and got me thinking as well as wondering when will our Nigeria get to this point. The people too are accommodating. They also enterprising. And the best city, that bubbles with life from all the places we visited is the Old City of Jaffa.

Truly, apart from the eye catching scenes and the busy schedules, the whole experience was a spiritual one as well. I enjoyed the early morning devotions and the evening time spent in exhortation and prayers. The fact remains that my pilgrimage to Israel was not a jamboree. The significance of the various holy sites visited became real and meaningful. I felt the presence of God. Jesus was visibly presence. There was impartation and indeed the move of God. Prayers were answered almost instantly. There was shout of praises and God was magnified in the midst of His people.

Upon our arrival in Israel on Wednesday for the 2017 pilgrimage exercise, on Thursday, December 13, 2017 we started our visit to sites from Bethlehem to Nazareth and concluded in Jerusalem. It was a winter season, so we had a feel of the cold weather.

On Thursday through our tour guide hired by Tailor Made Tour Ltd, we were driven to the top of Mount of Olives, from which Jesus ascended to heaven after His resurrection. Pilgrims will visit the holy shrines on the Mount (chapel of Ascension and Peter Noster Church) and walk on down the "Palm Sunday Road" visiting the Chapel of Flevit (Jesus wept) enrout to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of all Nations where Christ prayed on the night of His betrayal in Jerusalem.

Other sites visited include Ein Karem, where John the Baptist was born. In Bethlehem we visit Basilica of the Nativity, where we had the opportunity to kneel at the birth place of Jesus Christ in the Grotto of the Nativity. Also in Bethlehem we visited Field of the Shepherds, where the Angel of the Lord proclaimed the birth of the Messiah, the Saviour of the world.

On Saturday we were driven back to Mt Zion in Jerusalem to visit the Upper Room and the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu. We ended the day with visit to the Garden Tomb and Gordon's Golgotha, Tel Aviv and the adjacent Joppa where we saw the local basilica built on the location of Simon the Tanner's house where the impure animals vision took place.

On Sunday, the guide showed us the Mt of Beatitudes, Tabgha. Here we saw the Church of Multiplication of the loafs and five fishes. We had our Sunday Worship Service and took the Holy Communion. We also visited the Chapel of Primacy and had a boat trip across the Sea of Galilee.

Our visit to holy sites ended on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, where we visited the Old City of a Jerusalem and walk in the footsteps of the Jesus as He bore the sin of humanity to the Cross at Golgotha. We also visited Pools of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the man who had been crippled for 38 years (John 5:1-9). The tour took  us  Via Dolorosa 14 stations of the Cross from Pilate's Judgement Hall to the empty tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and climax with visit to the Western Wall (Wailing Wall) in Jerusalem. Then the JP celebration before a shopping at the Old Jerusalem Japher  popular Market. It was an incredible experience. I will love to have it again.

THIS IS FOR THE RECORDS...

After I became president, I asked one day
some members of my close protection to stroll with me in the city, have lunch at one of its restaurants. We sat in one of the downtown restaurants and all of us asked for some sort of food..._ After a while, the waiter brought us our requests, I noticed that there is someone sitting in front of my table waiting for food. I told then one of the soldiers: Go and ask that person to join us with his food and eat with us. The soldier went and asked the man so. The man brought up his food and sat by my side as I asked and began to eat. His hands were trembling constantly until everyone had finished their food and the man went.

The soldier said to me: the man was apparently quite sick. His hands trembled as he ate !!

"No, not at all," said Mandela. "This man was the guard of the prison where I was jailed. Often, after the torture I was subjected to, I used to scream and ask for a little water. The very same man used to come every time and urinate on my head instead"...;

Prior to the commencement of voting at voting venues, inspect the polling venues, polling booth, examine the polling venues, equipment and materials, examine the ballot box to ensure it empty, and to witness the sealing of the ballot box by presiding officer (PO)

May through the polling officer challenge and/ or identify the identity of a voter

To witness the making of ballot papers for incapacitated voters

May through the PO challenge the rejection or acceptance of a cast ballot paper

Only party Agents appointed by political parties and accredited by INEC will be allowed into the polling, counting and collation centres

 *RESIDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER (REC)*

He/ She is the head of  INEC in a state, a position which confers on him / her the responsibility to oversee the activities of the commission in that state

 *COLLATION OFFICERS (COS)*

He/ She collates and announces the votes scored by candidates at any of the levels of collation

 *A. Registration Area/ Ward CO.*

Collates and announces result from polling units within a Registration Area RA ward

 *B. Local Government Area CO.*

Announces results from the various Registration Area//wares for the various council, State assembly, Governorship, National Assembly and presidential Election at the LGA level).

 *C. State Constituency CO* .

Collate and announces result from all the RAs/ LGAs within a state constituency for the state assembly election.  He shall also be the state constituency Returning officer in the state house of Assembly Election.

 *COLLATION OFFICERS ( CO) 2*

 **D. Federal constituency CO.*

Collates and announces results from LGAs within a Federal Constituency. He/ She shall also be the Federal constituency Returning Officer in the election of the House of Representatives.

 *C. Senatorial District CO*

Collates and announces result from LGAs within a Senatorial district. He/ She shall also be the Senatorial district Returning officer in the election to the Senate.

 *State CO*

Collates and announces results from all LGAs within a state in the presidential and Governorship Elections. He/ She shall also be the Returning officer in the Governorship Election

 *G. Chief Electoral Commissioner*

Collates and announces the results from all the states of the federation in the presidential Election and is the Returning officer in that election. This shall be the Chairman of INEC or his delegated Representative

 *COLLATION CENTRE*

Collect a copy of the OU result sheet _ EC8a at the end of the result declaration, and also snap the result pasted on the wall at the PU_ EC60E

If there are discrepancies, the PU party Agent should inform the RA party who should raise an objection

 *E_ COLLATION & RESULTS TRANSMISSION*

Ensure that the PO enters the result into the eCollation  application installed on the card readers at the end of counting and declaration of result

If there is no network, he should be told to use the offline mode to enter the result and save it on the card reader

On the way to the ward collation centre, there may be network, so the PO transmits the result,

If there is no network, he proceeds to the RA, where there is a high possibility of network and transmit the result.

There is no formula to determine how many or if anyone came to terms with yesterday's ruminations.


But there was some feedback that is also becoming the "feedfront". They want more. I am inspired to write more. Because there is never a lack of any resources, including small business ideas. There is only a lack of will, as I have consistently maintained.


Those who have decided that whether there was capital or not, whether there was someone to help or not, took up the gauntlet and dived into the deep and the universe responded, causing the winds to blow in their direction and their stories stand to bolster our confidence that we can also break our own ribbons.


Today I will tell you the story of another strong man who towed that path. He is not my friend. He is my senior brother, Godwin Agba's friend. I know him very well. So many people that grew up in Kurmi Mashi, Kaduna know him. He is an educationist.


His name is Mr. Stephen but most people simply call him Mr. Steve. (I will still withold his 2nd name but you will sure get his telephone number as we progress).


Mr. Steve is from Benue state in North Central Nigeria. He is proudly Idoma but he spent most of his life in Kurmi Mashi and Sabon Layi in Kaduna state. He is now a Knight of Saint Mulumba KSM, at the St. Theresa Catholic Parish in Kurmi Mashi.


Like most of us reading this, Mr. Steve was battered sorely by poverty and was forced into carpentry; a trade he never learnt. He will construct what we used to call "cut-and-join" benches and hawk by himself to raise cash and keep things going.


It was a Herculean task raising 10k at the time.


So time passed and Mr. Steve decided to switch to home tutoring because that didnt really require any real capital to start.


His friend, says he only needed a few properly washed, well ironed shirts and trousers, with a good hair cut, so he will look nice while trekking from home to home to deliver his value to the kids.


He was disciplined not to take advantage of the kids he was supposed to be teaching. Their parents saw results. They started referring him to other homes. He couldn't cope alone again with the demand, he had to get a few friends to join him.


That was how Mr. Steve began from teaching kids at home until he raised money and rented a space around "up-Mashi", on your way from Sarki Avenue going to 44 Military hospital in Kaduna, to start his BrainTrust Tutorial center.


In less than two years, BrainTrust became something else. It became an approved WAEC and JAMB center. The crowds were bulging.


Mr. Steve later transformed from a tutorial center to a primary and secondary school. He bought over the uncompleted one storey building he rented and adjoining blocks, completed them and turned them to the school campus.


The crowd still overwhelmed the campus and he had to expand and open a second campus in Goni-Gora in Kaduna South.


Several of my brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews including Doris Ominu,  graduated from BrainTrust Tutorial and BrainTrust Comprehensive Secondary School.


Today Mr. Steve, who couldn't raise 10k, is not only a millionaire educationist, he is also giving so much back to the society and also getting his due recognition.


The school has trained people I know who are now Lieutenant Colonels in the Army, Navy Commander, Engineers etc.


He has also extended his fortune in scholarship to several students and the Catholic church has rightly recognized him with a befitting honor as a Knight of the Order of Saint Mulumba.

Sometime ago, a preacher from a distant town was transferred to a local Church.

Some weeks after his arrival, he had an appointment that made him to board a bus to another part of the town.

When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had mistakenly given him his balance in excess of 50 naira.

As he considered what to do, he thought within him,
'You'd  better give this money back. It would be wrong to keep it'.

Then another thought came,
"Oh, forget it, it's only 50 naira; who would worry about this little amount,
after all the bus company makes so much money on fares; they will never miss it.

Accept it  as 'a gift from God' and keep quiet.

When he was getting down from the bus, he paused momentarily at the door, and then handed the 50 naira to the driver and said,

'Take;
the balance you gave me was over'.

The driver, with a smile, replied,'

'Aren't you the new  preacher in town?'

'Yes I am'
he replied.'
I'd almost concluded that there are no Christians again and I will not go church again because of people's attitudes.
Thank God you passed this little test.
I have been thinking a lot lately about where to go to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I give you balance in excess.
I'll worship with you at the Church this Sunday.

When the preacher stepped off the bus, he grabbed a nearby pole, looked up and said,

'Oh God, I almost sold your  Son for 50 naira.'

Our lifestyles are the only Bible some people will ever read.

This is just a subtle example of how much people watch us as Christians, and will put us to test!

If Ken Saro Wiwa was quiet, the Ogoni people in Nigeria would have continued suffering in Nigeria as Shell continued stealing their resources and destroying their land making it harder for Ogoni people to farm and fish in surrounding land.

If Nelson Mandela had chosed to remain quiet, South African blacks would have remained slaves to White Supremacists.

If Mahatma Gandhi had been quiet, India would have remained slaves to Great Britain for a very long time.

If William Wallace had been quiet, Scotland would never had tested independence and freedom. They would have remained slaves to England.

If Martin Luther King had been quiet, the USA government wouldn't have made reforms to protect blacks in America.

If Martin Luther had been quiet, the Catholic Priest and the Aristocracts who controlled the world at the time would have continued enslaving poor people as they were doing 500 years ago. There wouldnt have been any other church except the Roman Catholic Church.

If Malcolm X had been quiet, black people would not have been free today in America to own certain things.

If Rosa Parks had been quiet, the black Americans would still have been standing on the buses while white people are seated.

Etc etc etc.

One day we shall be safe. The price of freedom is heavy but we must be willing to pay the price than to live in bondage, oppression and intimidation.

Those who don't want to fight for justice and righteousness for ALL but want to continue enslaving others and taking the crumbs from the master against the interest of their own people can do so. It is their choice but we will keep encouraging those willing to pay a price without shame.

ALL of us men of Goodwill will not keep quiet. We know we can be killed, but we will keep talking. God will be with us.

Awolowo was investigated for Corruption under Coker Inquiry, later tried for Treason in a regular court, he never said it was becase he was a Christian or Yoruba. He defended himself, and when his lawyer was denied entry visa to Nigeria, and his first son, an acclaimed international lawyer,  was coming to the court to defend him, he died in a road accident on his way to the Court..Abraham Adesanya broke the news to Awo inside the Court, he expected Awo to start weeping but he did not.

Awo called the attention of the Judge to the development and asked for permission to defend himself and other Accused.

"Segun is dead already, we that are alive must defend ourselves so that we dont die too. This is treason, we must defend ourselves first before we mourn my beloved son"

LEADERS are made!

AWO was a true leader that served his people altruistically unlike the egocentric "LEADERS here in Nigeria...... You know them now.

WHAT PRESENT LEADERS DON'T KNOW.

BALEWA never struggled to be Prime Minister. BELLO was qualified but gave it to BALEWA......
SHAGARI never wanted to be President.......but he ruled!

ABIOLA wanted it since 1983......he never got there even in 1993....We loved him but he did not get it.....

OBJ never lobbied for or desperate to be President. Falae wanted to since 1992 but he never got it.....OBJ did.

ODILI struggled and spent billions to get it....he never got it.....Yar'adua was not even physically strong enough yet he got it without spending his personal cash. ODILI got nothing!

JONATHAN has neither the cash nor the finesse to be President but he got it. He defeated desperate IBB and ATIKU in the primaries and BUHARI in the general!

BUHARI resigned to fate. He declared that he will not contest again. That is when GOD handpicked him and made him the President after HE had earlier watched him exhausting his personal energy and killing his desperation!

The time when JONATHAN had  no strength, he defeated mighty BUHARI....But when he had all the strength and money...he lost to BUHARI who had given up!
Osinbajo was eating amala in his house when he was made the Vice President and eventually an acting president.

While growing up as a child under an elder brother, we were taken to the market to get foot wears we could use for Christmas,I was so happy before we got to the market because I was promised a pair of rubber sandals.We arrived the vendor's shop in company of my elder brother who asked I point the one I liked,I did and my brother was told the last price was twenty naira while my brother offered to pay eighteen naira,I was denied the opportunity to wear those beautiful sandals because of  COMMON two naira.
That is not the major issue, the thing was that my elder brother had a lot of money in his pocket but could not add up two naira so I could evade the shame of wearing a pair of slippers which I had boasted before my friends I would never wear for a Christmas celebration.Right at the market I started crying so profusely that my elder brother stared at me in anger and pointed to the sky and said calmly, 'it is hanging up there waiting for you, just look at it, it is waiting for you.'Truly, I did not understand what it meant except to believe he was just being wicked for not adding up just two naira to make my Christmas celebration a good one.
Now I see quite often what was hanging in the sky that my brother was trying to point out to me, just recently I went to a boutique to buy a pair of shoes I liked, I was asked to pay ten thousand naira but I told the guy what I would pay was nine thousand five hundred naira even when I had more than twelve thousand naira in the pocket,so I ended up not buying those beautiful pair of shoes. Why did I not buy it even when I had more than the required amount in my pocket? I thought about so many bills that I needed to pay. As soon as I stepped out of that shop, one spirit spoke to me, 'the reason why you did not buy those shoes was the reason why your brother could not buy those sandals for you as a child even though he had more money in his pocket - he had other bills to pay.' Right at that point, I looked up and found the heavy burden he was pointing out to me in the sky and now I know time and age reveal all things.
Actually, to be a man is not a day job, I will share this story with him any time I go home and I will apologise and let him understand that I was only being a child that I was, though he knows so.
