In readiness for the celebration of Ukelle New Yam Festival which comes up on 16 September, 2019, Mr Asegem Emanuel - Former Member, Anti-deforestation Task Force, Governor's Office, Calabar has, in his usual philanthropic disposition, decided to sponsor football tournament among the youths in the different communities that make up south Ukelle.
Speaking on Ukelle New Yam Festival, 2019, via WhatsApp chat, the Peace Ambassador of Ukelle highlighted the importance of the celebration and the need to bring South Ukelle youth who have been fighting tirelessly to save their father's land during their war with Izzi, together in unity. He commended the youth for their gallant fight and courage, stating that he intends to use the occasion of the festival to redeploy their energies productively in the game of football by setting a prize for a winning team, first runner up and second runner up.
"I am delighted to announce my poised resolve to sponsor the youths of South Ukelle in a football tournament in celebration of Ukelle New Yam Festival, 2019. I thank God for sparing our lives in the course of our collective effort towards protecting our father's land for sustainable development. I must commend the gallant youth of Ukelle for their doggedness, courage and nationalistic disposition. I have set N30,000 aside, bought jersey for the two teams of Ijiraga and made arrangement for two footballs for football tournament. This tournament will not only promote sportsmanship, but also help our youngsters develop the spirit and spirit of unity. This is my own little way of paying my dues in Ukelle land."
The kickoff of the football competition took place on the 12th of September and the tournament will end on 15th September, 2019.
He has also extended invitation to all young people in Ukelle land and beyond, to join him at his Ijiraga home to celebrate with him. " I am using this medium to invite all Ukelle youths, my friends and well wishers to my house for the 2019 New Yam Festival."
He concluded by giving glory to God who had spared his life, and that of Ukelle people to witness another epochal event this year, thanking Him for a bountiful harvest, which can only come from the Lord of harvest.
