C’RIVER SUBEB FLAGS OFF ADVOCACY AND SENZITIZATION FOR 2016 TEACHERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB) in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has kicked-off its advocacy and sensitization for 2016 Universal Basic Education Teachers Professional Development programme workshop also known as Cluster School Model for early childhood care development and education.
The exercise which is held across the three senatorial zones kicked off on the 19th of August at the West African People’s Institute (WAPI), Calabar, with Southern senatorial zone and will come to a close 22nd August with Central senatorial zone.
Declaring the event open in Calabar, the Executive Chairman, SUBEB, Dr Stephen Odey stated that the event was to sensitize SUBEB, Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), Executive Secretaries, Facilitators, and Supervisors on the 2016 Cluster Schools model capacity.
While stating that, the essence of capacity building training for teachers cannot be overemphasized due to the dynamics of changes and innovation in the educational system. He noted that the series of systematic trainings been anchored by the Board are not mere formalities, but rather a conscious and deliberate effort to impact positively on schools in the State.
The Executive Chairman who was represented by the Director of Administration SUBEB, Mr Emmanuel Ojong explained that the retraining of teachers was to enable them remain relevant and effective in the education sector, adding that the quality of pupils produced in the educational system is dependent on the quality of teachers.
Speaking at the event, the Provost College of Education (COE) Akamkpa, Dr James Archibong commended SUBEB and UBEC for their efforts in ensuring that Cross River State teachers are constantly trained.
Dr Archibong who was represented by the Deputy Provost COE, Dr Ben Ugbong charged participants to show commitment and remain dedicated throughout the training programme through punctuality and active participation. He added that the training will increase productivity amongst teachers.
Dr Ugbong further thanked SUBEB for their continuous partnership with the College of Education as training partners for the Cluster programme.
The Director for Academic Services SUBEB, Mrs Margaret Mgbeje, stated that the training programme was designed to assist teachers and other educational personnel to share ideas and innovations in teaching, as well as develop creative skills in producing, adopting instructional materials for teaching and developing the spirit of team work in the school environment.
She also stated that the cluster schools model was in line with current trends in education which emphasizes on ; active learning and learner-centred curriculum; critical thinking and problem solving, amongst others.
While stating that the training programme will begin after resumption of schools in September, she added that the 2016 cluster model has moved from 22 to 25 training clusters.
