NLC holds parallel congresses in Ebonyi




The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday, held parallel congresses to elect new leaders of the union. The two factions are led by Ikechukwu Nwafor and Leonard Nkah respectively.

The union, it was gathered, has been enmeshed in leadership crisis since 2017 following the alleged suspension and impeachment of the Chairman of the union, Ikechukwu Nwafor, by a faction of the union.

Subsequently, his then deputy, Leonard Nkah of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) was announced as Chairman by a faction loyal to him.

The parallel congresses which held at different locations in Abakaliki, the state capital produced parallel leaders of the union.

The Nkah faction re-elected him as the Chairman of the union while the Nwafor faction also re-elected him as its own Chairman.

Those elected into Nwafor-led faction are: Emmanuel Egwu Item (Vice Chairman); Charles Ozoemena Aneke (Vice chairman); Amira Tobias N. (Auditor); Kelechi Nwanchor (Auditor); and Anthony Egwu (Treasurer).

Nkah’s faction produced: Thompson Ngele (Vice Chairman); Emmanuel Mbam (Vice chairman); Chukwudi Onwe (Auditor) Joel Nnaji (Auditor); Mrs Veronica Osim (Ex-Official); Elom David (Treasurer) and Comrade Okoro (Ex-Official).

While Nwafor’s faction was sworn-in by Mr Benson Upah, said to have come from the NLC national headquarters, Abuja; Nkah’s faction was said to have been sworn-in by a member of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, Mr Metu Nathaniel, who was the chairman of the credential committee.
In his acceptance speech, Nkah thanked the workers for the confidence they reposed in him by re-electing him for another tenure and promised to pursue their welfare with vigour.

On his part, Nwafor, while thanking the workers promised to always stand with them even as he appealed to them to work together for the good of the union.
