ABUJA-PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, mocked the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Gosday Orubebe and the former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega over the 2015 Presidential election results.
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari
President Buhari specifically said the organisers of the 2018 Democracy Day lecture which had Prof. Jega as the guest lecturer should have invited the former minister at the event.
He said he would not forget in a hurry the exchange of words between Orubebe and the former INEC boss because of the outcome of the result of the Presidential election.
Recall that Orubebe had, at the heat of tension generated by the outcome of the Presidential election in his rejection of the result said, “I will not take it.”
But making his remarks at the International National Contre Abuja, the venue for the Democracy Day lecture with the team, “Peace building and good governance for sustainable development” President Buhari also recollected the efforts of the then government of the United States, Barack Obama towards ensuring that the 2015 elections held.
The President said, “Here I must digress to raise an observation by the programme organisers because I did not see Mr Orubebe who ought to have come and listen to professor Jega deliver his lecture, this is a major observation.
“That instance, for those of us who were lucky that there was light and we had the television to see the confrontation between Orubebe and prof Jega, it will remain a life impression to many of us.
“The other one is the prof Jega briefing to the government, the opposition and the military before the date of the election was finally agreed on.
“Prof Jega, as a professor, it was not surprising, briefed us of his activities between 2011 and 2015, the recruitment, equipping and training of INEC officials, that gave those of us who are lucky to get the report, the courage that nothing outside the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be accepted by the opposition.
“So, the question of an interim administration or postponing election for more than 90 days shouldn’t be on the table and I thank personally the United States government then under President Obama by sending John Kerry to read the riot act to the government and to us the opposition then that nothing other than a free and fair election will be acceptable.”

Special Remarks by His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, The President Federal Republic Of Nigeria At The 2018 Nigeria Democracy Day Lecture On 28th May, 2018 At The International Conference Centre, Abuja
President Muhammadu Buhari addresses the guests during the Democracy Day Lecture held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja
I am happy to join the array of eminent Nigerians present here today, as we celebrate the 2018 Nigeria democracy day which marks the 3rd year of this administration and to reflect on the progress we have made in our democratic journey and governance in the last three years.
2. A government elected by the people, must continually be in touch with the aspirations of the people, and work for their highest possible good.
3. The theme of this year’s celebration “Peace Building and Good Governance for Sustainable Development’’ has been carefully selected to reflect our current opportunities and challenges.
4. We have experienced rough times, but through good governance we have not allowed ourselves to be overawed by the existing of challenges. Weak governance is often at the core of rising inequality and unequal development resulting in social disruption and political unrest with negative impacts on growth and development.
5. Accordingly, we have engaged in several rounds of dialogue and town hall meetings, targeted at peace building, between the aggrieved and in some cases warring factions and communities. We have worked hard to dialogue with and if they turn unreasonable decimate insurgents in various parts of the country.
6. We are still grappling but successfully, with border disputes and restoring the much needed peaceful co-existence amongst our people and neighbouring countries. The rebuilding of the North East is ongoing, to return our internally displaced brothers, sisters and children to their ancestral homes.
7. Our resolve to fight corruption was informed by the realisation that reducing corruption and ensuring the effective and just utilisation of public resources, are crucial for achieving sustainable growth and development in Nigeria. Corruption has been at the root of most of the development challenges of our country. There can be no progress in any facet of our national life unless we tackle and curb corruption.
8. Good governance is the polar opposite to corruption. Accordingly, we will not relent in our efforts to eliminate it regardless of the opposition. It manifests itself in several forms including accelerating poverty, conflicts and civil disturbances, as those who feel short-changed, resort to violence and destruction.
9. The security in the country today has considerably improved against the background of what we met in May 2015. Incidences of bombings in towns and villages have been drastically curtailed, series of plots have been averted and stopped and culprits arrested through the vigilance, patriotism and professionalism of our security agencies. The entire country has been freed from occupation of any of its parts by insurgents.
10. While we grieve with our compatriots who have lost relatives and properties, we are unrelenting in equipping and preparing our troops to confront the agents of violence, who have been engaging in banditry and reckless killings in various parts of the country under whatever guise, until total victory is achieved. Again it is pertinent to note that insurgency and terrorism are world-wide phenomena affecting even the best policed nations.
11. Our Economy is on the mend. We have achieved a good number of our set objectives, notably increased food production and food security; increased economic diversification into sectors that were hitherto neglected or under-explored.
12. Our foreign reserves have reached new heights and the outcome in respect of investments in infrastructure expansion are manifest everywhere.
13. Overall, we are on track. I thank and commend all who have worked so hard with us to achieve these successes. I assure you that our people will continue to see and experience more progress, more prosperity and greater security.
14. Finally, I call on Nigerians to remain steadfast and to keep faith with this Administration, as we remain committed to peace building and good governance, to deliver the best of dividends of democracy to the Nigerian people.
Thank you and God bless.

It's been reported that Abramovich, who is Jewish, jetted into Tel Aviv on Monday and had received documents confirming his status as an Israeli citizen
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , the owner of Chelsea football club who has found himself without a visa to Britain, took Israeli citizenship on Monday and will move to Tel Aviv where he has bought a property, an Israeli media report said.
Abramovich has been counted as one of the richest men in Britain since he bought the Premier League side in 2003. His British visa expired last month and it's understood it is taking longer than usual to get it renewed. The British government has declined to comment on his case.
The Ynet website that belongs to Israel ’s biggest selling daily, Yedioth Aharonoth , said Abramovich, who is Jewish, jetted into Tel Aviv on Monday and had received documents confirming his status as an Israeli citizen.
An Israeli immigration absorption ministry spokeswoman declined to comment on the report citing individual privacy but a spokeswoman for the Population Administration which oversees border control confirmed that Abramovich was in Israel.
A spokesman for Abramovich also declined to comment on the report.
Israel grants citizenship to any Jew wishing to move there, and a passport can be issued immediately. Israeli passport holders can enter Britain without a visa for short stays, although they require visas to work there.
Relations between Moscow and London have been strained since the poisoning of former Russian double-agent Sergei Skripal in Britain in March, an act Britain has blamed on Russia but in which the Kremlin denies any involvement.
Abramovich has been a regular visitor to Israel and Ynet said he had bought a property that was formerly a hotel, in an old Tel Aviv neighbourhood close to the Mediterranean shore.

Arsenal transfer news: New manager Unai Emery close to completing £16m deal for Sokratis Papastathopoulos
Arsenal initially offered roughly £13m but they are expected to meet Dortmund’s asking price of £16m to complete the deal this week
Arsenal are close to making Borussia Dortmund’s £16million Sokratis Papastathopoulos their first signing of their summer.
Recruitment chief Sven Mislintat is targeting a total defensive overhaul this summer, to help Unai Emery who replaced Arsene Wenger as head coach last week. They want as many as four new defenders this window after a disastrous season at the back.
Mislintat knows 29-year-old Sokratis well from his own time at Dortmund and now Arsenal are in advanced negotiations to bring him to the Emirates. Arsenal initially offered roughly £13m but they are expected to meet Dortmund’s asking price of £16m to complete the deal this week. Sokratis has one year left on his Dortmund contract and is eager to join Arsenal.
Sokratis has played for Dortmund for five years, joining from Werder Bremen, after playing for Genoa and AC Milan after leaving Greece. He has 79 caps for the national team, representing them at Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.
What could Unai Emery's Arsenal look like?
Papasthopoulous would be the third former Dortmund player that Mislintat had signed for Arsenal since taking charge of recruitment at the Emirates last year.
Arsenal signed Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Dortmund in Janaury and then took former Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United as part of the Alexis Sanchez deal.

The Welshman’s not-so-subtle 'come and get me' plea was heard around the world - but were the right clubs listening?
Less than 24 hours after Real Madrid lifted a historic third consecutive Champions League title the heroes of that night in Kiev were back in the Spanish capital showing off their prize. Sergio Ramos had triumphantly draped the statue of Phrygian goddess Cybele in a Real Madrid flag outside the palace named after her before engaging the crowd in song after song as the party rolled into the Bernabeu.
There the festivities continued, as Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo did a version of the latter’s famous goal celebration and the crowd joined in with a rapturous “Siiiiii!” echoing around the stadium. But it is the words of Saturday’s match winner which are echoing the loudest around Europe. And it was no coincidence that a tight-lipped Bale was restricted to a role on the periphery as his Real teammates partied and happily posed for photographs.
“I'm disappointed not to start the game,” said Gareth Bale , no more than 30 minutes after scoring arguably the greatest Champions League final goal ever. “I felt like I deserved it but the manager makes the decisions so what can you do? I need to be playing week in week out and that hasn't happen this season for one reason or another, I need to sit down in the summer and discus it with my agent and go from there.”
Bale’s loveless marriage with manager Zinedine Zidane appears to have finally hit the point of divorce as the two didn’t say a word to one another after the final. To say the Welshman was unhappy to be left out of the semi-finals against Bayern Munich would be putting it lightly and his frustration was laid bare to see after proving his point in Kiev from the bench.
The Independent revealed on Sunday, hours after the world’s least subtle ‘come and get me’ plea, that his comments were aimed at Manchester United, his first choice, and he has told some Real teammates just as much.
But it’s not as simple as that.

As the recently re-crowned richest club in the world, United can afford Bale and his wages - of course they can - and he carries the X-factor, the superstar name that Ed Woodward and his commercial department are always craving. His announcement video wouldn’t just have
Alexis Sanchez’s piano, it would have the whole orchestra. It all makes so much sense. Or at least it did 10 months ago when Jose Mourinho spoke publicly of his admiration for the Welshman ahead of the
Uefa Super Cup between United and Real.
But now the picture is not quite so clear. Sanchez’s arrival has since satisfied Mourinho’s hunger for a forward , even if his form has been nothing like how it was advertised at Arsenal, and the Portuguese has other priorities – namely midfield and defence. They also feel that a deal for Bale would be too highly priced – both in terms of a fee and wages, given he is said to earn a total of almost £600,000 a week – at too high an age, especially considering his recent injury problems.
Should United remain stubborn to their current mindset, a distinct possibility given Woodward’s unrelenting confidence in almost anything Mourinho decides, then the options become scarcer.
This is the best goal EVER in a final.
Period.
Insane from Gareth Bale. #UCLfinal

Tottenham Hotspur have retained their first refusal on Bale that was included in the initial deal to take him to La Liga for £86m back in 2013. Leaked documents of the transfer confirmed the details of Spurs’ position where if Real were to accept a bid from any other Premier League club before 30 June 2019, the north Londoners would then have 72 hours to match the offer. Should they do that, Real, contractually, must sell to Spurs.
Bale would likely fetch anything in the region of £100m, however, and with a new £1bn stadium to pay off and a basic wage cap (excluding bonuses) of £100,000-a-week, the dream homecoming for so many Spurs fans remains just that – a dream. It would take a dramatic shift Bale’s wage demands or the tautness of
Daniel Levy’s notoriously tight purse-strings to change the current situation, especially with the knock-on effect on other star players’ wages that would inevitably have to follow.
So where else? Chelsea? Manchester City? The most likely third option for Bale and his team would actually be Bayern Munich, who have a very good relationship with Real Madrid. They negotiated a two-year loan deal with an option to buy for James Rodriguez last summer and oversaw the exchange of
Xabi Alonso and Toni Kroos a couple of years earlier. It is an option that has been tentatively mentioned on Bale’s side although United firmly remain his favoured move.
To put it simply, any transfer will be far from simple. Bale’s sublime first goal in the Champions League final had the desired effect of reminding the world of his brilliance, but also ironically jogged Real’s memory of what he can do and they will now have altered his asking price somewhat. And they’re not afraid of holding on to players whose price-tags are not met, as shown with Alvaro Morata in 2016.
This will run and run and something will have to give at some point, whether it’s United, Real, or – more likely – the Welshman’s salary.
So brace yourself for this summer’s blockbuster transfer saga, starring Bale in the lead role. The drama is only just getting started.

The Egyptian was forced off midway through the first half of Saturday's Champions League final after injuring his shoulder in a tussle with Sergio Ramos
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah will travel to Spain on Wednesday to undergo treatment on his shoulder injury, the Egyptian Football Federation has announced.
The Reds' 44-goal top scorer was forced off midway through the first half of Saturday's Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid due to the problem sustained in a tangle with Sergio Ramos .
Salah tweeted on Sunday that he remained "confident" of being available for Egypt's World Cup campaign in Russia, and on Monday evening it was confirmed he will head to Spain.
The Egyptian federation said Salah began his rehabilitation programme on Sunday, and was in "high spirits" and "determined to return quickly to the ranks of the team".
He will receive treatment in Spain, accompanied by the president of the Egyptian federation, the national team doctor and Liverpool medics.
"Mohamed Salah began his treatment programme on Sunday, when he confirmed in a telephone conversation with the technical and administrative staff of the team he was in high spirits and determined to return quickly to the ranks of the team," the federation said in a statement on its website.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledged in the wake of Saturday’s defeat in Kiev that it was a “serious injury”, with the club fearful he had dislocated his shoulder, which would likely rule him out of the World Cup finals.
But in a tweet on Sunday evening, Salah said he expects to play in Russia with the Egyptian national team.
“It was a very tough night, but I'm a fighter,” he wrote.
“Despite the odds, I'm confident that I'll be in Russia to make you all proud. Your love and support will give me the strength I need.”
The World Cup begins on 14 June, with the host nation Russia taking on Saudi Arabia in the first Group A match.
Egypt’s first match, against Uruguay, takes place on the second day of the tournament.

The Brazilian midfielder will formally seal a switch to Anfield on 1 July
Liverpool have signed Fabinho on a "long-term" contract, the Premier League club announced on Monday evening.
The Brazilian midfielder joins from AS Monaco for a reported £43.7m and will formally complete his move to Anfield on 1 July after completing his medical at Melwood.
The player told the club's official website: "I am really excited about this move.
"This is something that I always wanted - this is a giant of a team. The infrastructures of the club look exceptional.
"A football club of this size coming after my services, I didn't have to think that much about coming over.
"I will try to create my own history at this football club. Hopefully, on a personal level, I'm able to win titles with this club.
"I will try to grow and learn and improve myself, and to be part of the club's history."
Fabinho, who has four caps for his country, becomes the club’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old started his professional career at Paulinia FC in Sao Paulo before joining Fluminense. He went on to sign for Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2012 and was later loaned out to Real Madrid.
It was at AS Monaco, though, where the player rose to prominence. Fabinho made 225 appearances during five seasons at the club, scoring a total of 29 goals.
His arrival now casts further doubt on Emre Can's future at Anfield, with a move to Juventus increasingly likely for the German midfielder.

With the Pyeongchang winter games closed, Tokyo is stepping up preparations for the next event on the Olympic calendar, with busy building sites dotted around the Japanese capital.
On a nondescript patch of land east of Tokyo, cranes are whirring frantically against a city skyscraper backdrop as 200 workers toil on the 2020 Olympic canoe venue.
With the Pyeongchang winter games closed, Tokyo is stepping up preparations for the next event on the Olympic calendar, with busy building sites dotted around the Japanese capital.
Unlike in previous Olympic host countries, where there was a scramble to finish venues on time, Japan appears to be living up to its reputation for efficiency, with foreman after foreman telling AFP on a recent tour of sites: "We are on schedule."
The Aquatics Centre in Tokyo Bay is a hive of activity with workers scurrying around the huge site, pushing to finish a venue that will eventually welcome 24,000 cheering supporters.
"Roughly 25 percent of the work is already done," said Daishuu Tone, director of venues for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
"We are confident we will be on time," he added, with the first test events scheduled for mid-2019.
The city's governor Yuriko Koike told AFP in an interview that Tokyo was making "steady progress" towards hosting the games, the second in its history after 1964.
"We hope to make it a wonderful Games," she said during an interview in an imposing 48-floor office looming over the Tokyo skyline.
And Tokyo 2020 chief executive officer Toshiro Muto is also bullish, telling reporters: "Everything is going very smoothly and I can clearly say that most of the competition venues are on track and they will be completed as scheduled."
'Significant' cuts
During the bid process, Japan sold itself as a "safe pair of hands" -- an advanced economy with a history of efficiency and excellence.
But organisers are still battling to wrench the Games back on track following a series of PR disasters after Tokyo beat Madrid and Istanbul to win the bid in 2013.
The main issue has been the budget, which rapidly spiralled out of control and forced a red-faced Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to tear up the blueprints for the original Olympic stadium.
Koike admitted: "There was a time when Tokyo's budget seriously ballooned. We have reviewed it and then we reviewed it again. So it has been very much squeezed from the previous budget."
In December, Tokyo 2020 organisers announced a "significant" cut of $1.4 billion in the budget, bringing the overall bill to 1.35 trillion yen ($12.6 billion).
"The budget should be reduced to the greatest extent possible," stressed Koike, adding she would continue to make efforts towards "creative" budget solutions.
Tokyo 2020 organisers were also embarrassed by a plagiarism scandal that led to the scrapping of the original games logo due to its similarity to that of a Belgian theatre and a separate Spanish design.
But the unveiling last month of a pair of futuristic "superhero" mascots picked by schoolchildren around Japan sought to draw a line under that scandal and rekindle enthusiasm for the Olympics and Paralympics.
Battle against heat
If the pace of constructing venues is unlikely to cause headaches for Tokyo, plenty of challenges remain, notably dealing with the summer heat in the Japanese capital where temperatures regularly top 35C (95F).
Koike noted that Pyeongchang had the opposite problem, with fans urged to wrap up warm in extreme cold and buffeting winds forcing organisers to postpone the showcase men's downhill.
"In Tokyo, we will... need to implement various creative efforts and ideas to deal with the heat," she said.
The governor said she was more concerned for the supporters than the athletes who "are very capable -- more so than ordinary people -- of bringing their physical fitness to deal with any climate."
Organisers are looking at coating pavements with a substance to reduce the surface temperature and making sure there are trees to provide shade for competitors and spectators alike, Koike said.
There are also worries over contamination in Odaiba Bay, where the triathlon and open-water swimming events will be held.
Samples taken between July and September last year showed levels of e-coli bacteria more than 20 times higher than permitted -- apparently brought about by unseasonably heavy rain.
Muto said organisers would solve this problem using special "underwater filters" that have proved successful in cleaning water in testing.
He acknowledged that the problems at the outset had impacted public confidence but insisted the Games had turned the corner.
"I understand that ordinary people still have the idea that things did not proceed smoothly in the beginning," he said.
"But I think the situation has rapidly improved and now we have reached the stage where preparations are very smooth."

AYADE FLAGS OFF CROSS RIVER UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME
... donates N250m as seed fund
theeaglesvoice.blogspot.com - Leave a comment
In a bid to ensure a universal health coverage for all citizens, Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, yesterday launched the state comprehensive health insurance scheme, christened Ayadecare.
The scheme which also targets the vulnerable as well as the zero income earners in the state got N250 million as seed fund from Governor Ayade.
While the governor donated N200 million on behalf of the state, the sum of N50 million was on behalf of Ayade and his family.
Speaking at the U. J. Esuene Stadium, venue of the launch, the governor said the May 28 launch, a day set aside to celebrate the Nigerian children was deliberate as it sought to give priority to children and women who are the vulnerable in the society
"The state will invest heavily in the scheme to ensure quality and affordable health care services for our people", Ayade said, while advocating for Federal Government support to ensure the success of the programme in the state.
Justifying the launch of the scheme, the Governor said "the scheme is a clear indication that the state is in the right path to ensuring prosperity and better health services for the people. Our children must have access to the scheme and the launch of the programme on Children's Day is to celebrate the children who are leaders of tomorrow. "
Ayade, while commending the lawmakers from both the National and State House of Assembly for offering to subscribe for 500 persons in each of their political wards, noted that the scheme will take care of the very poor in the society.
Also speaking, the Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. John Gaul Lebo, commended Ayade for the scheme, noting that with the launch, the governor had shown a strong commitment to a better health care in the state.
The speaker assured the governor of continuous legislative support for the scheme in the state.
In his remarks, Special Adviser on Insurance, Chief Godwin Iyala, commended Governor Ayade for the initiative, and disclosed that the scheme was designed to put more money in the pockets of Cross Riverians.
According to Iyala, an average family in Cross River spends at least N25,000 monthly on health and that by "this scheme, we are determined to ensure health governance. It is to ensure affordable and qualit healthcare. Cross Riverians are very happy with the governor. The universal health care is now at our door steps and we will ensure it succeeds."
Director-General of the state Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr. Betta Edu said Ayade has taken measures with the launch of the scheme to improve the health care of Cross Riverians
According to her, "less than five percent of Cross Riverians have access to health care. It will enhance quality and affordable healthcare"
A representative of the National Health Insurance Scheme, commended the governor for the scheme, noting that it was to provide safety net for the needy in the society and guarantee improved health. He assured the state of the Federal Government's support to ensure the success of the programme.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong said the launch of the scheme was in fulfillment of the governor's deep vision for healthcare in Cross River State.

While growing up as a child under an elder brother, we were taken to the market to get foot wears we could use for Christmas,I was so happy before we got to the market because I was promised a pair of rubber sandals. We arrived the vendor's shop in company of my elder brother who asked I point the one I liked,I did and my brother was told the last price was twenty naira while my brother offered to pay eighteen naira,I was denied the opportunity to wear those beautiful sandals because of COMMON two naira.
That is not the major issue, the thing was that my elder brother had a lot of money in his pocket but could not add up two naira so I could evade the shame of wearing a pair of slippers which I had boasted before my friends I would never wear for a Christmas celebration.Right at the market I started crying so profusely that my elder brother stared at me in anger and pointed to the sky and said calmly, 'it is hanging up there waiting for you, just look at it, it is waiting for you.'Truly, I did not understand what it meant except to believe he was just being wicked for not adding up just two naira to make my Christmas celebration a good one.
Now I see quite often what was hanging in the sky that my brother was trying to point out to me, just recently I went to a boutique to buy a pair of shoes I liked, I was asked to pay ten thousand naira but I told the guy what I would pay was nine thousand five hundred naira even when I had more than twelve thousand naira in the pocket,so I ended up not buying those beautiful pair of shoes. Why did I not buy it even when I had more than the required amount in my pocket? I thought about so many bills that I needed to pay. As soon as I stepped out of that shop, one spirit spoke to me, 'the reason why you did not buy those shoes was the reason why your brother could not buy those sandals for you as a child even though he had more money in his pocket - he had other bills to pay.' Right at that point, I looked up and found the heavy burden he was pointing out to me in the sky and now I know time and age reveal all things.
Actually, to be a man is not a day job, I will share this story with him any time I go home and I will apologise and let him understand that I was only being a child that I was, though he knows so.
