EPL: Lampard praise one Chelsea player after 2-1 win at Watford

By Ifreke Inyang

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has praised Mateo Kovacic for his display against Watford.

Lampard hailed the midfielder’s ability to move the ball and drive forwards.

Kovacic impressed alongside Jorginho at the heart of the Chelsea midfield in a 2-1 win and earned special praise from his manager for his efforts.

“Kovacic, his ability to play – him and Jorgi together – and then that ability to drive from midfield, that’s not the norm.

“As a midfield player it’s your worst nightmare having a player who can play and then drive by you out of nowhere.

“He was doing that today to great effect. Really pleased with him,” Lampard told Sky Sports.

Senator Okorocha — What closure of borders will do to Nigerians

Senator Okorocha

Sen. Rochas Okorocha commended the Federal Government for closing land borders, saying that the measure would motivate Nigerians to look inside for better ways of feeding themselves.

Okorocha made the remark at the Government House, Kano on Saturday, as she answered questions from newsmen.
“I think closing the border means we should start looking for better ways of feeding ourselves inwardly. By creating such an atmosphere, people are now beginning to understand why we should be self-reliant and ensure food safety, “he said.
Okorocha, Imo’s immediate past governor, said that more needs to be done by the federal government to track drug trafficking across illegal borders.

He noted that it was a difficult task as it involved managing the bushes around neighboring countries because there were more than 3,000 entry points in the country.
“This nation has been a consuming nation for too long and not a productive nation. As we are not economically independent, this has also made our own issues more worrying.

“For virtually everything we eat and use, we rely on other countries; and that’s not good for our youth and the unborn generation.

“So, closing the border is creating awareness for us to start consuming what we are making. They should therefore take more realistic strategies to ensure that they encourage young people and others to look inward and create the products we import, “he said.

Okorocha also called for a new approach and style in the fight against crime and criminality in the country. “We should change our style and approach in fighting crime, because we have adopted same method of fighting crime for a number of years with low results.

“If you keep doing the same old thing, the same old way, you’re going to keep getting the same results and if you do the same style over and over you don’t get results, you’re going to fail the same style,” he explained.
He said it was time for the federal government to develop new ideas to curb crime in the country as the country’s security challenges took on different dimensions.

Fear grows over attempt to re-arrest IPOB leader, Kanu, during mother’s burial

Gabriel Ogunjobi

From Sunny Nwankwo, Umuahia
There are fears among members and supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), that the attempt by security agencies to re-arrest the leader of the group and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, may prevent him from attending his mother’s (Sally Meme Kanu’s) funeral.

This is even as an Abuja Court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako reportedly denied the prayers of Kanu’s counsel; Emeka Ejiofor, seeking for the restoration of his client’s bail and guarantee Kanu’s safety so that he could return home to continue his trial.

It could be recalled that Kanu in a tweet had announced the death of his mother on August 30th in Germany after attempts by doctors to restore her failing health stalled.
Kanu, who in a video also confirmed that the body of his mother had already been flown to Nigeria (Biafra Land), stating that he would communicate his supporters when the family concluded arrangements for her burial.

Our reporter, who interacted with some members of IPOB who chose to speak anonymously in Umuahia, the state capital, and Aba, the commercial nerve of the state respectively, reports that the members were yet-to-be informed about the burial arrangements.

They were afraid that their leader (Nnamdi) may not witness the burial of his mother as they alleged that information available to them has it that the federal government has placed security agencies on alert to arrest Kanu if he attempts coming back for his mother’s burial.

The IPOB members who disclosed that they were awaiting further directives from the leadership of the pro-Biafra group, however, assure that its members in Nigeria and the world at large, are making plans to ensure they were in attendance anytime the burial of late Ugoeze Kanu was fixed.

While business and other activities were ongoing at the Isiama Afara, the country home of Kanu, some of the residents who spoke to our reporter said they were sad when the news about the death of the wife of their traditional ruler broke.
They described her as a loving and caring woman that never segregate, stressing that it will take them long to recover from the shock of her loss.

Some respondents, including the President-General of the community, Mr. Ikechukwu Ndubueze, said the family of Kanu is yet to make any official statement concerning the burial apart from the video that he (Kanu) recently released.

It was further gathered from some other members of the community that according to tradition, Kanu, as the first son of the family, was supposed to be present at the burial.
But the uncertainty over whether Kanu would be present at his mother’s burial casts further doubt as to when the burial will eventually take place.

Some of the IPOB members in Umuahia told our reporter that they have been noticing the presence of plain-clothed security personnel around their leader’s village, but said that it would not deter them from actively participating in the burial of the mother of their leader when it is made known; they, however, said that making the burial of Kanu’s mum public for everyone to come and pay her last respect would make the world see that IPOB is peaceful contrary to the picture the federal government and heads of various security agencies are painting about them.
According to them, they were unaware of where the body of the wife of their traditional ruler is kept by the family. That is, whether it is in Abia State or any other part of the Southeast.

They however insisted that no matter the years it will take, the mother of the IPOB leader would not be secretly buried, but to be buried according to the customs and tradition of the people of Isiama Afara Ibeku community.

When contacted to know if the Kanu’s has reached out to the state government and the level of the state government’s participation in the burial of the wife of the traditional ruler on whose land the present Government House is situated, the Commissioner of Information, Mr. John Okiyi-Kalu, in a text message said he was in a meeting.

However, yet-to-be confirmed reports making rounds in the state have it that Kanu’s father died in a popular hospital in Umuahia, the state capital after weeks of being in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
While the family is yet to make official statement over the death of the monarch, rumours have it that His Royal Highness; Israel Okwu Kanu, has been sick and had died on Thursday, October 31.

10 'Most Urgent' Cases of Threats to Press Freedom Around the World (A MUST READ)

BY TIME STAFF

UPDATED: NOVEMBER 1, 2019 7:03 AM ET

More than a year after he was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi remains at the top of a list of the most serious threats to press freedom.

The list — released each month by the
One Free Press Coalition, which was created by a dozen news organizations , including TIME, with the goal of defending journalists under attack — identifies ten of the most severe cases of threats to press freedom around the world.

Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post who had criticized Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, 2018. He was among the four journalists and one news organization named

The Guardians as the TIME 2018 Person of the Year, recognized for his work in the face of serious threats to journalistic freedom.
Khashoggi’s death has remained a controversial topic in the thirteen months since he was killed. Despite findings from the CIA concluding that
bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s killing and a United Nations special report that found “credible evidence” calling for a deeper investigation into bin Salman’s role in the assassination, President Donald Trump has been criticized for his muted response over the murder and continuing to
maintain ties with Saudi Arabia.

Bin Salman said he takes “full responsibility” for Khashoggi’s murder, but denied ordering the killing in an interview with 60 Minutes in September.
Other journalists on the list who have come under threat include an imprisoned reporter in Egypt who has been tortured and a detained Uzbek blogger.

Read about all 10 journalist on the November list here:

1. Jamal Khashoggi (Saudi Arabia): No resolution in violent killing inside Saudi consulate

The one-year anniversary of Khashoggi’s killing has passed without officials opening independent criminal investigation opened into his death, despite findings from U.S. intelligence officials and the United Nations pointing to bin Salman’s involvement. Although the Saudi prince has claimed responsibility for the murder, calling it a “mistake,” he has denied having a direct role.

2. Daphne Caruana Galizia (Malta): No resolution two years after reporter was murdered in Malta

More than two years have passed since the investigative reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed in a car-bomb explosion in Malta. Though three men have been taken into detention in relation to her murder, no one has been brought to justice. Trial dates have not been announced, either.

3. Esraa Abdel Fattah (Egypt): Imprisoned and tortured over allegations of spreading false news

The Egyptian journalist Esraa Abdel Fattah was arrested on Oct. 13 and was one of at least seven journalists detained amid anti-government protests in Egypt. 4. Azory Gwanda (Tanzania): Authorities withholding information about journalist missing for two years

Nov. 21 will mark two years since the freelance journalist Azory Gwanda disappeared. He had previously been investigating mysterious killings in Tanzania. Though a Tanzanian government official said in July that Gwanda had “disappeared and died,” they later backtracked on the statement.

7. Nafosat Olloshukurova (Uzbekistan): Uzbek blogger detained in psychiatric center

The Uzbek blogger Nafosat Olloshukurova has been detained in a psychiatric center for at least a month, following 10 days detention on charges of petty hooliganism and taking part in unauthorized assemblies. Ghanaian government clashes with Ghana’s traders’ union over attack on Nigerian businesses

Carlos Ahenkorah

Ghanaian Government has condemned the closure of businesses owned by Nigerians in Kumasi by the former Gold Coast’s Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Trade, Carlos Ahenkorah, explained that the government frowns at such move by the union as the Nigerian economy is too big for Ghana to fight over border closure. According to him, Ghanaians should rather opt for dialogue which could yield positive results.

Nairametrics reported earlier today that Ghana’s traders’ association closed some shops owned by Nigerians. Although GUTA said its action was in line with Ghana’s constitution which disallows foreigners from operating certain businesses, there were claims that the action was provoked by Nigeria’s decision to shut its land borders.

The Nigerian government has been criticised by some Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike for its decision to shut the borders as it has led to loss of revenue for businesses in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. The Ghanaian government and Vietnam government have visited Nigeria to resolve what is gradually becoming a trade stand-off between Nigeria and other African countries.

Why Ghana’s Ahenkorah is worried
According to a report, Ahenkorah said Nigeria’s economy is six times bigger than Ghana’s, so there’s need for Ghana to exercise caution while dealing with Nigerian government, as any hasty action backfire.

He warned that a trade clash with Nigeria could affect Ghana more, adding that Ghana isn’t an island, so there’s need for better trade relationship with foreign countries.

“Their economy is six times ours, why go fighting them? When you need to appeal for their support. I want GUTA to understand that whether they like it or not, we need other economies to support what we do here. I’m pleading with GUTA, just take your time and let’s find a way to resolve the issue. They don’t need to go trading blows. If you trade blows, you only get the bigger guys to outsmart you.”

GUTA disappointed at Ahenkorah’s comment
GUTA’s Financial Secretary in the Ashanti Region, Maxwell Bamfoh, said he was disappointed by Ahenkorah’s statements.

 Deal book 300 x 250
Bamfoh said the traders’ association would continue to shut down Nigerian businesses in Ghana since the Ghanaian government had failed to take action against Nigerians for flouting Ghana’s law. He said the traders would continue to use the laws against Nigerians for disobeying Ghana’s constitution.

Nigerians can sue us if they want
Despite the condemnation that trailed GUTA’s action against Nigerians in Ghana, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of GUTA, Daniel Acheampong, has challenged Nigerians whose shops were shut, to sue the association.

Acheampong said the criticism against their action was baseless as Nigerians flouted the law of the country. He said the association could as well flout the rules since their means of channelling their grievances was questioned.

Be careful when sending your wives abroad - Ghanaian-UK resident warns

Agya Oppong was speaking to SVTV Africa

A Ghanaian man living in Luton, United Kingdom has advised his countrymen who wish to bring their wives to join them while abroad to think twice before arriving at such crucial decisions.

Agya Oppong, a father of five who his currently stranded in the UK has given a chilly account of how he got divorced, lost his job, property and is now struggling to survive.

Believed to be in his late 50s, he disclosed to DJ Nyaami of SVTV Africa in an interview that it all started when he brought his wife to join him in France.

According to him, he secured a stable life in France where he was working for 27-years with a major health facility and decided to bring his wife to stay with him while efforts were underway to facilitate their children to join them.

“In the process, one of my children died and my wife travelled back to Ghana for the burial. I later also travelled to Ghana and by the time I returned, she had packed all my things and flew with the children to the UK. I followed up and a lot of developments took place. In the heat of the confusion, we divorced and here I am today”, he said.

He further disclosed that he could no longer return to France because he had lost his job and property and was with the hope of making a better living in the UK but it is not as rosy as he thought.

“I am not comfortable being here because things are very tough. I am just struggling to complete the project I started before I moved back home but it is not easy”, he lamented.

A livid immigrant took the opportunity to advise Ghanaians against bringing their spouses to join them outside the country as it turns out to be their waterloo.

I cannot discuss petition against Tinubu, says Magu

Accuses Doctors Of Issuing Dubious Medical Reports To Criminals
The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, refused to give an update on a petition it received against the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Magu, who was asked by journalists in Abuja to give an update on how far the Commission had gone with the petition, responded swiftly: “Do you want me to start discussing Tinubu’s petition here? No I can’t; next question!”

The convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, had submitted a petition to the EFCC penultimate Friday requesting it to investigate the source of money conveyed in bullion vans to the home of the APC stalwart on the eve of the 2019 presidential election.

Magu, however, went on to accuse medical doctors of issuing dubious medical reports to criminals who were facing trials, lamenting that the reports were truncating so many corruption cases.

He said the Commission was on the verge of clamping down on such doctors, adding that the Commission would also summon some lawyers to explain why corruption cases were dragging in court.

Magu said that Operation Rewired, which the Commission embarked on, has resulted in the seizure of nearly $2.4 million, and the disruption/recovery of approximately $14 million in fraudulent wire transfers.

He added: “Also worthy of mention is the Operation Triangle, which saw Italian police and EFCC working closely to dismantle a trans-national criminal group operating in all the five continents.

“EFCC in close cooperation with the Italian National Police as well as Spanish, Polish, English, Belgian, Georgian, Turkish and Cameroonian police, with the support of Europol and Interpol, and the coordination of Eurojust, carried out extensive investigations which resulted in the arrest of 62 individuals, seizure of 40,000 euros, 30 smart phones, 10 tablets and 15 personal computers.

“Some of the Nigerians mentioned in the infamous FBI list of cyber fraudsters have been tracked, arrested and are being prosecuted in courts across the country by the Commission.

“But more fundamental than these international collaborations is the sustained effort of the Commission to comprehensively tackle the menace of internet related frauds in Nigeria. I am happy to report that we are recording series of breakthroughs with almost daily arrests of suspected fraudsters across the country.”

Continuing, the EFCC boss revealed that in October alone, the Commission recorded over 200 arrests of internet fraud suspects in carefully coordinated operations across its offices.

“However, the major talking point for us was the recent arrest of celebrated social media personality and alleged internet fraudster, Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha and his Lebanese accomplice, Hamza Koudeih. They were picked up in Abuja and Lagos respectively, through credible intelligence which flagged the suspects as kingpins of Organised Cyber Syndicate Network (OCSN).

“Five wristwatches valued at over N60 million were recovered from Mompha at the point of arrest. Investigation has also revealed that he operates 51 bank accounts in Nigeria with which he acquired properties in Dubai and had laundered about N14 billion through Ismalob Global Investments Limited. His accomplice, Koudeih, also has two firms namely, THK Services Limited and CHK Properties Limited with which he has allegedly laundered about N19 billion. Koudeih lives in a $5million per annum suite at the Eko Atlantic Pearl Tower, Victoria Island Lagos,” he said.

According to him, “these arrests have further confirmed our commitment to the fight against corruption and economic crime and sent a clear message to high end fraudsters that they can only run but cannot hide. Sooner than later, we will get them.”

Barack Obama ‘Slapped’ Michelle With Divorce Papers?

GRIFFIN MATIS

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama aren’t getting divorced. It’s just a bogus rumor being spread by a tabloid. Gossip Cop found the story ridiculous.

The cover of this week’s Globe is alleging that Barack has secretly “slapped” Michelle with divorce papers. The tabloid’s insiders claim the former president was tired of having a “toxic marriage of convenience” after “a series of nasty fights.” The bombshell proof, says the outlet, is the fact that the two have both been photographed without their wedding rings.

“Michelle had divorce papers drawn up by her lawyers, and the word is Barack has taken things a step further by serving Michelle with papers of his own,” says an alleged source. The “insider” doesn’t clarify how responding to divorce papers with divorce papers is an escalation. “She was shocked, as you can imagine,” adds the supposed tipster, “but now she’s conspiring with her lawyers to squeeze Barack for as much money as she can.”

“He’s refused Michelle’s demands for alimony,” the questionable source continues. “Word is, Barack thinks it’s ludicrous because she can clearly support herself. Michelle’s not only written a best-selling book, she has a law degree. She can go back to work anytime!”
The seemingly phony insider further claims that Barack is adamant about keeping their property in Martha’s Vineyard, and then rattles off a list made-up fights between the couple. These outrageous claims range from allegations of infidelity to faking their marriage for political gain. The tabloid then points to its previous “report” about Barack ripping off his wedding ring and throwing it at Michelle in a recent fight over her “luxury-loving ways,” and with that, we’ve reached the crux of this latest article: their rings.

Aside from the variety of anonymous sources, the only proof the tabloid has is the fact that Michelle uploaded a photo on Instagram of her exercising without her ring, and that Barack was spotted without his ring during a speaking engagement. This is the same evidence the outlet pointed to in its first iteration of this rumor. The only problem is that Gossip Cop thoroughly debunked Globe ‘s initial report of the Obamas “$150 million” divorce .
As we previously reported, Barack frequently takes off his ring during public events to avoid having anything happen to it while he’s distracted shaking hands. Meanwhile, Michelle obviously just temporarily removed hers as she was working out with heavy weights that could easily damage her ring or finger if she kept it on.

The former first lady’s wedding rring was back on her finger in every one of her Instagram photos posted since the workout snap — including those from
this week’s 2019 Obama Foundation Summit . The couple hosted the event, which saw them deliver a number of speeches together without a hint of the tensions or anger that the tabloid claims has ravaged their marriage.
Of course, the publication doesn’t bother mentioning the fact that both have been spotted with their rings since their fictional fight. The outlet’s sources clearly don’t actually have any connections to the former president or first lady. If a former president does actually divorce their spouse, we expect to hear the news from more than just a single gossip outlet with a track record of printing fiction.

Appeal Court Sacks Jibrin Abdulmumin As Kano Lawmaker

Jubrin Abdulmumin

By Adejayan Gbenga Gsong

The Court of Appeal in Kaduna has nullified the election of Kano State lawmaker, Jibrin Abdulmumin.

The decision followed the nullification of elections in two local government areas of Kiru/Bebeji Constituency. The appeal court ordered fresh elections in the constituency.
The judgement delivered by Adejoje Adepoju followed an observation by the court that the final result contained in Form EC (8)E as submitted for the constituency was mutilated.

Mr Jibrin, a member of the All Progressives Congress, was declared the winner of the election by the electoral commission, INEC. The Kano State election petition tribunal had in December dismissed a petition by Mr Jibrin’s contender, Aliyu Datti of the Peoples Democratic Party. That ruling has now been nullified by the appeal court decision.

Okorocha Reacts As Supreme Court Asks Atiku To Accept Defeat

Senator Rochas Okorocha, representing Imo West has reacted to the ruling of the Supreme Court against the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar

Okorocha who urged Atiku to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court against him in good fate further encouraged him ‘join hands with his brother to move the country forward”.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory was only authenticated by the Presidential Petition Tribunal and the Supreme Court.

Through his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha insisted that available statistics proved that Buhari won the 2019 presidential election.

However, Okorocha further saluted Atiku for taking the courage to challenge the outcome of the election to a logical conclusion, adding that his action will help to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

The statement reads: “President Buhari won his election looking at the statistics of that poll but the Presidential Tribunal and the Supreme Court only authenticated the victory.

“But what Atiku did was also good for our democracy, it helps to strengthen our democracy but I urge that he now joins hands with his brother, the President to move the nation forward.”

Trump Rewards Anti-Impeachment Senators With Cash for Re-Election Bids: Politico

Reuters / Joshua Roberts

President Donald Trump is rewarding GOP senators who have supported him during impeachment proceedings with cash for their re-election bids, according to a report from Politico. Many Republican senators are struggling for funds ahead of next year’s election and it appears Trump is happy to use that for leverage to protect him against impeachment in that chamber. On Wednesday, the Trump re-election campaign reportedly sent a fundraising appeal to its colossal email list telling donors to give money to a pot that would be divided by the president and three senators who have supported anti-impeachment moves. Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, and North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis have all signed on to a Republican-backed resolution condemning the impeachment inquiry as “unprecedented and undemocratic.” The email to Trump supporters read: “If we don’t post strong fundraising numbers... we won't be able to defend the President from this baseless Impeachment WITCH HUNT.”

Buratai said the operation was first launched in the northeast in September, would be conducted nationwide to intercept Boko Haram insurgents who had relocated from their enclaves to other parts of the country.

Buratai, represented by the Head of Civil-Military Affairs, Army Headquarters, Major-General U.S Usman, noted that the exercise would not involve movement of troops or their presence in communities.

He said soldiers had been deployed to 34 states of the federation owing to the spate of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other crimes.

He noted that the army does not operate in isolation, but always works with other security agencies in its operations.

He added that if the army arrests criminals, it hands them over to the police except for insurgents detained and profiled by the army depending on the situation.
