The Reds suffered a 3-0 loss at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night

Virgil van Dijk has stood firm in his belief that Liverpool have not given up hope of reaching the Champions League final.

The Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night in the semi-final leaving them facing an uphill battle to qualify for the competition's showpiece during the second leg at Anfield on Tuesday.

However, Van Dijk is not ready to give up on the possibility of his side reaching back-to-back finals despite Jurgen Klopp's men failing to score an away goal.

He said: "We believe. We will keep believing. We know how tough it can be with the quality they have throughout the pitch but we showed at times we could definitely create good chances against them and make it difficult.

"They still have that extra quality but we will try to do everything possible to go through.

"I am disappointed but the result on the scoresheet does not really reflect how well we played and what the game was like. We had some big chances, should have scored one and they could have scored a fourth.

"But it is 3-0 and we have a big job to do at Anfield but we have shown throughout the season that we never give up. We need everyone to be together and let’s see how it goes."

Klopp believes this was Liverpool's best away performance in Europe this seaon.

Van Dijk says he is disappointed with the result but outlines that there are "things to build on".

"It is all about results, especially in the semi-final, and we have a big job to do," the Dutchman added.

"The only thing is that we can only keep believing and keep working hard for each other and stay positive and there is no reason to panic.

"We had to be brave and we had to defend bravely and at times it was one versus one with me and Joe and Suarez and Messi but especially with the pressing we had to stay brave and plenty of things we have to improve on.

"Overall, disappointed with the result but there were so many things that happened so we have to build on that.

"We don’t forget about it but you have to take a lot of positives and know you need to improve. We made it very difficult for them and created good chances and we were dangerous on the break although so were they. We will look at the things we have to improve."

Paris Saint-Germain’s Dani Alves has urged teammate Neymar to display more self-control after his altercation with a fan following last weekend’s Coupe de France final penalty loss to Rennes.

Alves and Neymar both featured as PSG lost again on Tuesday, this time 3-2 away to Montpellier in Ligue 1, and the former admitted that he was unable to defend Neymar’s recent behaviour.

“It was a delicate moment,” he said. “We had just lost a title and he was hot-headed. It was a reaction and one that I think was not right in that moment. You cannot get involved in this sort of thing. You have to show more control.

“I believe that you have to make mistakes to improve. Not necessarily like this, but this mistake will cause him to reflect a bit. Neymar is an exceptional guy, but he can be a bit rash at times.

“This sort of reaction, no matter how friendly we are, I cannot be in favour of it. I believe that he has learned, and I hope that it will not happen again.”

PSG led twice in Montpellier but were pegged back and ultimately lost to a late Souleymane Camara goal.

Neymar played the full 90 minutes but was unable to prevent his team from going down to their third Ligue 1 defeat in their last four matches.
