...my panic saved my life
When a Pretoria woman in her early thirties accompanied her sister who was taking her daughter to a pediatrician for routine check-up, little did she know that her guardian angel was actually pushing her to the right direction.
The woman who had travelled internationally two months ago says she had experienced mild coughing and a 'little bit of fever" two weeks prior to her going to the doctor with her sister and niece.
"I did not really take the cough seriously until the lady at the doctor's reception joked about coronavirus when my little niece started coughing. The receptionist chuckled around suggesting to my niece that she must get tested for the Covid-19 virus," she says.
She adds that it then hit her that she is actually the one who could have contracted the unusual virus during her international trip.
"I started panicking and told the doctor about my recent travel and she suggested that I get tested to check if the virus had not found a way into my body", says the woman.
She adds that she did not ignore the doctor's order and went straight to the hospital where she explained her recent travel and the symptoms she had been experiencing.
"Tests were run and I was admitted for two days because something was worrying my doctor. When the results came back, to my shock I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism", she further says.
Pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot gets lodged in an artery in the lung may lead to sudden death if untreated.
"If I did not panic that day, I wouldn't have gone to the hospital and who knows! Maybe the Pulmonary Embolism could have damaged my lungs and killed me. I'm grateful to be alive", she says.
She says she called the pediatrician to thank her for insisting she gets tested immediately.
"Don't get me wrong! I'm not insinuating that the panic around coronavirus is a good thing. All I'm saying is that my panic saved my life", says the grateful woman.
