…says matter in court not for camera coverage
The Youth in Governance Support Initiative (YGSI), Wednesday, condemned suspension threat by the Senate investigative 6-man panel to suspend the embattled Senator Elisha Abbo (PDP Adamawa) on Tuesday over his reaction to questions raised on alleged case of assault on a nursing mother in a sex toy shop in Abuja.
The National Coordinator, Comrade SundayMichael Emaluji, said the investigation would have been without the coverage on the camera of the media, rather should have respected the rights of the Sen Abbo and also as their colleague who can object to unlawful process of investigation on his alleged assault.
He further stated that matter already is in court and needs not to be taken too far as he is being tried by the court that just granted him a N5 million bail, therefore it was unfair to treat the Senator that way.
He said: “We condemn the action of the Senate investigative panel over the alleged assault on a nursing mother by Senator Elisha Abbo because they would have done the investigation without the camera of the media.
“As a matter of fact, there is no investigation done in this country with cameras, including the media themselves don’t use their camera to investigate a story, not to talk of the security agencies in this country.
“Moreover, the matter is in court and the Senate should have also respected what the court is doing about the allegations leveled against Sen Abbo. We are not saying all this because we are sponsored by anybody but it is our duty and watchdogs against illegalities committed by anybody and raising the alarm over such actions as violation of the constitution.”
The group also said the Senator in question should be investigated in a professional way and according to the rules and business of the Senate and not with sentiments.
It will be recalled that Sen Abbo on Tuesday appeared before the 6-man panel set up by the Senate to investigate him, where a melo-drama started as Sen Abbo said he had no business appearing and making comments about the matter anywhere since it was in court, therefore refused to be placed on an oath.
Meanwhile, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu (APC-Lagos), who is also a member of the panel, expressed anger over Abbo’s comments before the panel.
She said, “This matter has affected the Senate as an institution and we have been mandated to investigate it. You can’t sit there on the other side and dictate the modalities and approach we follow to us as committee. We are trying to protect the Senate and hear from you, but we can also suspend you because of your attitude.”
This made Abbo to flare up and said he won’t allow the committee to threaten him with suspension, because the matter was in court.
