Thousands of hybrid palms nursery from NIFOR, Benin city have been procured for distribution to members of Okambi and Ikwomikwu communites whose wild and old breeds of improved Agricultural palms were cleared to give way for the ongoing construction of the Obudu International cargo and passengers Airport.
The Project Manager of the ongoing Obudu Int'l Airport Project, Mr Paul Agbebia Obi, who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday in Calabar, explained that during the land acquisition for the airport, alot of wild Palm trees and old breeds of improved Agricultural palms were uprooted while clearing the site.
Mr Agbebia Obi maintained that by his nature, Governor Ben Ayade will not cause harm or hardship to his own people, not even any other persons.
"It is for this reason that His Excellency has ordered the procurement of thousands of hybrid palms from NIFOR in Benin for distribution to the affected Community members of Okambi and Ikwomikwu.
A hundred of Hybrid Palms in harvest yields more than 500 of the old breeds and more than 1000 of wild palms. A farm of 100 Hybrid palms lifts a family far off poverty line, atleast a yield of 1.2-1.5m is expected annually," the Airport Project Manager maintained.
The Airport Project Manager further disclosed that a trainer is coming from NIFOR, Benin to train the benefitting Communities of Okambi and Ikwomikwu on Saturday, July 7, 2019 on how to manage the Nursery as well as the technicalities in Planting. Projected income and timing.
