POTENTIAL CONTENDERS SERIES PART VI
BAR. EFIOK COBHAM In Focus...
Though many persons today claim to be leaders, one thing that is very certain is that leadership is not a name to be given to someone, it is not a position to be inherited and it is not a commodity money can buy.
It is funny when mediocres today finds themselves in position of authority and begin to call themselves leaders. The quest to be called a leader today has led to the creation of so many organizations, bodies , groups and forums where men with no vision, mission and direction impose themselves on others and begin to call themselves leaders.
Leadership entails service, capacity, discipline, comportment, contentment, integrity, and above all, loyalty to a cause that will uplift the wellbeing of humanity. It is on these note that we shall be focusing on our potential contenders series part vi on one of the illustrious sons of great Efik Eburutu Kingdom, Bar. Efiok Cobham.
His Excellency, Bar. Efiok Cobham became a deputy governor to His Excellency, Lyel Imoke in an era in the history of Nigerian politics where disloyalty and the quest to rebel and confront principals were very high, mostly by deputy governors. It was an era where most deputy governors would work to either remove their governors if they succeed or they decamp to opposition political party to fight dirty with the governor if they don't succeed. This era saw to Virgy Etiaba succeeding Peter Obi in Anambra State, Enyinnaya Abaribe fighting dirty with Orji Uzor Kalu in Abia, Nsima Ekere fighting dirty with Godswill Akapbio in Akwa Ibom and so many others we may not remember again. While some of these deputy governors had little genuine cause for fighting, it was a time pride reigned supreme amongst Nigerian politicians and the quest to lead and not to follow was high.
Bar. Efiok Cobham served under His Excellency, Lyel Imoke for 8 years without any quarel with his principal and history records that he was the most loyal deputy governor of that era. He is highly educated, humble and very disciplined for it can take only a well disciplined deputy governor to serve for 8 years without parting ways with the governor the way Nigerian politics is played.
Bar. Efiok Cobham has remained very loyal to His party, the PDP and every cause that will lift Cross River State High. Even after leaving office, he has refused the temptation of doing the normal typical Nigerian politician way of defecting to remain relevant, for to him, the unity and progress of Cross River State is more important than anything else. No wonder, the present government in Cross River State has never shy away from consulting him whenever it is necessary. He was the Director General of Ben Ayade/Ivara Esu campaign team in 2019 and has never refused to serve the state whenever he is called to do so in any capacity that will bring progress to Cross River State.
Since leadership entails service, capacity, integrity, contentment and above all loyalty to a positive cause, Bar. Efiok Cobham becoming governor of Cross River State if Christ tarries in 2023, would be a step in the right direction as he has the capacity having served as a deputy governor, he is humble, contented, and has shown a very high level of integrity in and out of office.
Bar. Efiok Cobham is one quality leader that will do well if allowed to rule Cross River State as governor
NOTE: He is the 6th in the series of people we are profiling and we will do more.
