Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith has died at the age of 74. Known as the 'Anfield Iron', Smith made 638 appearances for the Reds between 1960 and 1978.

During his 18 years at Anfield, Smith won the league title four times, the European Cup, the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Cup twice. He scored in the 1977 European Cup final as Liverpool beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 to win the trophy for the first time.

Former team-mates and other ex-Liverpool players have paid tribute to Smith, who had struggled with dementia and other ailments.

Phil Thompson said: "I loved him from the Kop because of his passion, commitment and never-say-die attitude... he was iconic."
Ex-Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish added: "He was a great advert for Liverpool Football Club, the way he conducted himself. His memories will be there forever."
