It is with great shock, deep emotion and total disaffection that i received the sad news of the sudden demise and passage to eternal glory of my elder brother and big uncle, the former PDP National Publicity Secretary and Minister of Environment, Chief John Ogar Odey.
A good heart has just stopped beating, and a good soul ascended to heaven. We part with our beloved brother and uncle in pain and tears.
That extraordinary light that shone in Cross River State and the country for almost 58 years has been extinguished; that life of epic proportions that graced his journey so far has been eclipsed by sudden illness and death, but his legacy lives on.
His life was characterized by humility, an incalculable breath, depth and height of devotion and service to his country and to his countrymen and women. He was indeed a rare gem – indomitable in courage, unflagging in zeal, steadfast in purpose, total in commitment, clear-sighted in vision, irreproachable in character, and yet simple in manner, and scented with the sweat and soiled by the toil of the ordinary folk whose world was always his.
Chief John Odey was an accomplished son of Yala nay Cross River State and Nigeria; indeed one of the most accomplished in recent times that has ever walked this land of ours. In a real sense, much of our history over the last few years is what he endured, did and achieved.
I am deeply saddened by the loss and trauma encountered by the immediate family, friends, business associates and loved ones. My heart goes out to all during this trying times and may my prayers serve as comfort to all his loved ones.
Accept my sympathy and deepest condolences. May his gentle soul find perfect peace and rest with the Lord our God...... Amen!
