Students Union Government, (SUG), University of Calabar Chapter, Awards Magu.


Comrade Magu was awarded for his unmatchable fits and outstanding Contribution to the welfare of students and the growth of education. Magu who is also an alumnus of the institution, has indeed contributed tremendously to the welfare of students and the institution both as Student and now as a lecturer. 







Earlier today the University of Calabar chapter of the Students Union Government, awarded a scholar and erudite lecturer, Comr. Thomas Odey Magu.

Comrade Magu was awarded for his unmatchable fits and outstanding Contribution to the welfare of students and the growth of education. Magu who is also an alumnus of the institution, has indeed contributed tremendously to the welfare of students and the institution both as Student and now as a lecturer.

In recognition of his sterling qualities and hard work, during his NYSC service year he was conferred with a Chieftaincy title for his outstanding performance in Community Development, He has won several awards some of which include; a research patent from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Presidential Standing Committee on Inventions and Innovations (PSCII), Scholarships from Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) for his MSc and PhD respectively and also honored with a Merit Award for his fast-tracking contribution to Yala Student, Youth and Humanity at large by the National Association of Yala Local Government Students, CRUTECH Chapter and another Merit Award for influencing and encouraging Yala youth towards education and for the maintenance of good and quality standard of education in Yala, Presented to him by the Yala Enlightening Youths for Good Governance and Students Mentorship Award from National Association of Physical Science Students, Unical Chapter.

He is a creative, driven and excellent young leader who sees himself as a change catalyst and a game-changer. With over five years experiences in sectors including education, consumer goods, non-profit and technology, He has garnered exceptional skills in content development, scientific researching, educating, mentoring, advocacy, team building, training, strategic management outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills expressed in several capacities including his role as American Chemical Society, University of Calabar International Student Chapter Faculty Advisor and the President of Association of Nigerian Students in China (ANSIC), Beijing municipality.

He is highly passionate about the role of science in creating a better world and also working in a Development Advisory team that will provide innovative solutions to contemporary development challenges (Sustainable Development Goals). He has a strong commitment to strengthening Africa’s human capital – especially through mentoring, educating the youths - to drive social and economic prosperity. This has informed him strong interests in the emerging technology sector in Africa and how it intersects with education, poverty eradication, employability, nonprofits and innovation.

Reputable in character and learning, Comr. Magu is a member of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Chemical Society (ACS), European Center for Research Training and Development UK, Nanoscience and Nanotechnological Society of Nigeria (NANOSON), Chemical Society of Nigeria, Calabar, (CSN), Material Research Society (MRS), American Standard for Testing Materials (ASTMs), Nigerian Red Cross Society, Calabar and more.

He was recently appointed by the International Younger Chemist Network (IYCN) Executive Board as a member of the Governance team which will oversees IYCN membership requests and analytics, enforces and updates their Statutes & Bylaws, and plans the biennial IYCN General Assembly (the next of which will be in Montreal, CANADA 2021).

He run a mentorship platform where he provide guidance to graduates on scholarships applications and also provide free career advise.

Comr. Magu is an erudite scholar.
