Suspected political thugs on Monday clampdown on the secretariat of the People's Democratic Party in Osogbo, Osun State, disrupting a stakeholders' meeting of the party and unleashing mayhem on some members of the party.
A source who does not want his name in print disclosed that Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, a chieftain of the party had despatched key members of his political family to the venue as advance team awaiting his arrival.
The source hinted that the matter would have escalated and become more severe if Ogunbiyi was not prevailed upon not to go to the venue.
Another source who appeared worried and shocked said, "thugs were mobilised to the party secretariat in anticipation of his arrival at the meeting."
"He (Ogunbiyi) was just few minutes into the venue when he was alerted on the nefarious intentions of some disgruntled elements who were perplexed by his soaring popularity and wide acceptance."
"He yielded to voices of reason and thereby averted what could have been a serious clash or even a huge tragedy. When it became obvious to the miscreants who were posing as PDP members that their target was no longer coming, they pounced on his aides, beating them with cutlass, charms and sticks."
The Chairman of the Party, Hon Soji Adagunodo and National Deputy Publicity Secretary, Prince Diran Odeyemi were not spared.
Multiple sources disclosed that the attacks were orchestrated by overzealous loyalists of Senator Ademola Adeleke and targeted at Ogunbiyi over his stance against their planned removal of the chairman of the party.
