The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB) has demoted the head teacher and deputy of St. John's Primary School, Akamkpa LGA to classroom teachers.

The demotion was as a result of the absence of the head teacher and his deputy during the on-going routine monitoring of schools by the Board.

The Executive Chairman SUBEB, Dr Stephen Odey, who was visibly angry that no teachers were found in the school compound at the time of his visitation expressed his disappointment at the lack of commitment shown by teachers.

According to him " it is so disappointing that as at 7.30 to 7.40 a.m no single teacher is here. Parents who came to drop off their children and other pupils are now waiting on their teachers, what example are they setting for these pupils. It is almost 8.a.m and some of them are just strolling in."

Dr Odey who directed the immediate demotion of the Head teacher and his deputy, described them as unfit to oversee the administration of the school.

He blamed the poor attitude of teachers on the bad leadership example of the Head teacher and deputy.

The story was no different at Government primary school, Old Netim II, Akamkpa LGA. Upon the Executive Executive Chairman's visit at 8.18 a.m morning assembly was still being conducted.

While addressing teachers at the School, Dr Odey said " assembly is still on at this time when pupils should be in their classroom receiving the first lesson of the day. It is almost 8.30 a.m how will you meet up with the timetable at this rate."

Addressing teachers at various schools Dr Odey warned that stricter sanctions will be meted out on teachers who fail to live up to their responsibilities.

The Board Chairman stated that governor Ben Ayade has ensured regular payment of teachers salaries and teachers should compliment government efforts by showing dedication to duty.

Speaking against improper dressing, he urged teachers to set the right example for pupils by maintaining a neat appearance.

He reiterated that the school timetable should strictly be adhered to and lessons must begin at 8 a.m.

Dr Odey who stated that lateness and absenteeism will not be tolerated by the Board, further directed that all late and absent teachers should be issued with queries.

The team also visited Army Day primary school, Akamkpa LGA.
