The Obong of Calabar and natural ruler of Efik Kingdom His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V has called on Cross River State owned tertiary institutions to introduce Optometry as a course of study that will produce professional train eyecare doctors to tackle vision impairment.
He made this call during a courtesy visit by the National President of Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), Dr Ozy Okonokhua and his Executive members to brief the King about their Annual National Conference and free eyecare outreach to the people of Odukpani Local Government Area which form part of the association Corperate Social responsibility.
Edidem Otu enjoined the association to do more by ensuring that their services and free outreaches cut across all nooks and crannies of the State.
The Royal father used the opportunity to call on State owned tertiary institutions to introduce optometry as a course of study to enable more Cross Riverians take full advantage of the field in readiness to combat the increasing rate of eye deficiencies.
Earlier Speaking, the National President of Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr Ozy Okonokhua said part of the conference artinaries is to create more awareness on eye health and vision care among the populace with a view to preventing blindness through knowledge and information.
According to him the association has taken eye care services down to Primary healthcare level to ensure remarkable reduction of avoidable blindness burden.
Dr Okonokhua also intimated the natural ruler of the free eye care outreach in Adiabo Community of Odukpani LGA as part of the association give back to the society. He officially invited the Obong of Calabar and his entire council to the opening ceremony of the Conference on 18th of July 2019 at Calabar International Convention Centre and the free eyecare outreach in Adiabo Community.
