Liverpool have started planning for the 2019/20 season by releasing two players who were part of Saturday’s UEFA Champions League Final victory.
Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno will leave when their contracts expire this month, with the Reds making room for new players as they plan another Premier League assault.
Sturridge joined Liverpool from Chelsea in 2013 and was a key player alongside Luis Suarez as the Reds pushed Manchester City all the way during the 2013/14 season.
He finished with 67 goals in 160 appearances, with the last two years bringing precious little in terms of game-time.
“Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think, manager Jurgen Klopp said. “He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important.”
Moreno joined from Sevilla for £12-million in 2014 and was first-choice for two years, but lost his place after a string of indifferent performances, most notably in the 2016 UEFA Europa League Final, resulting in James Milner being switched to left-back.
He played 141 games for the Reds, but made just four appearances this time around.
