Senate Calls For State Of Emergency On Rising Insecurity

…condemns killing of 2 aid workers in Kajuru

The Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Wednesday, called for state of emergency over rising insecurity in order to stem the tide and avoid total collapse of security in the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Rose Oko, where the senators vehemently condemned the killing of a 29 year old British aid worker with the Mercy Corps, Faye Mooney, and Matthew Oguche, a Nigerian who works with a safety-based Non-Governmental Organization.

The killing took place at Kajuru Castle, Kajuru Local Council in Kaduna on Friday, 19th of April, 2019 by armed bandits suspected to be kidnappers.

The statement reads in part, “There is therefore a need to declare a state of emergency to stem the drift to total collapse of security in our country.  There is the need to ensure security and protection of life and property of our citizens which is the cornerstone of the social contract that government intrinsically entered with her.

“The Nigerian Senate will work with the Executive Arm of government to bring lasting solutions to the insecurity currently bedeviling the nation.”

The Committee also condoled with the families of the slain aid workers, “The Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations is   saddened by the tragic killing of two aid workers at Kajuru Castle, Kajuru Local Council in Kaduna on Friday, 19th of April, 2019 by armed bandits suspected to be kidnappers.

“The deceased have been identified as Faye Mooney, a 29-year old British national who works with the Mercy Corps, a non-governmental aid-based organization and Matthew Oguche, a Nigerian who works with a safety-based Non-Governmental Organization.

“We sympathize with the families of the deceased and condemn in very strong terms the tragic incidence noting that mindless killings, kidnappings and several other atrocities have continued unabated in many parts of the country, all symptomatic of a breakdown of security in our dear country.”

They also commiserated with the people of United Kingdom, UK, over the killing of their citizen, “We are deeply saddened by this dastardly act and sympathize with the government and people of the United Kingdom over the death of their citizen during the attacks and also condole with the family of our own national who met the same fate.”
