Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Joseph Adim Bassey acknowledged that the training has unveiled their eyes to the abundant human resources that has hitherto been untapped.
The Commissioner’s representative, who charged participants to urgently articulate concept notes that would be acceptable and possibly fast track the ministry’s drive towards attaining universal health coverage (UHC) in cross River State, maintained that there are available opportunities to be explored that could address issues of sustainability when partners eventually disengage from supporting Heath care delivery process in the State.
Dr. Bassey said the Ministry of Health is ready to collaborate with the University of Calabar and the Center for Human Resources for Health Management Training (Center for Excellence) to address needs in other health related- issues.
Declaring the workshop open, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana I. Akpagu, said human resource managers need to be vocal and active within the health community, and therefore, require
training and re- training.
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by Prof. Idongesit Akpabio, Dean, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, charged participants that the workshop should not end in work planning alone, but extend to implementation.
Speaking on behalf of the country representative of Population Council in Nigeria, Dr. Sylvia Adebajo, Mr. Godwin Unumeri, thanked Global Affairs Canada for supporting Population Council in terms of capacity building in Human Resource for Health Managers, pointing out that the Council has been working in Nigeria since 1962 in health related areas such as HIV/AIDS, poverty, gender and youth, among others.
Unumeri who expressed appreciation to the Cross River State Government’s commitment to accelerated Health Care delivery in the State, added however, that technically, the project effectively, ended on March 31, 2019.
The Population Council representative who was obviously impressed with the outcome of the training, observed that inter-agency relationship appears insufficient, noting also that he was confident that the ministry of health has the capability to do a mapping of human resource capacity for health in the State.
In her remarks, the coordinator for Center for Human Resources for Health Management Training in the University of Calabar, Dr. Benardine Nsa Ekpeyong, expressed satisfaction that the composition of the 6 modules training was understood as evident in group works, assignments and assessments given to participants all through the training period. She commented participants for carrying out every assignments given by each facilitator.
During the formal closing ceremony for the training, the Vice Chancellor who was later represented by the Deputy Dean of the College of Allied Medical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Regina Ejimot Nwadiaro encouraged the participants to fine-tune the three concept notes and work plans which she described as ‘powerful’, for possible funding.
Dr. Benardine Nsa Ekpeyong, Dr Regina Ejemot-Nwadiaro, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, Prof Nelson Osuchukwu, Head of Department, Department of Public Health, University of Calabar, Dr. Antor Ndep, Dr. Ekpereune Esu, Mrs Obiageli Onwusaka, were high-profile resource persons who served facilitators for the programme.
Prominent among participants at the training were representative of the Head of Service, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Manpower development in the Office of the Head of Service, Mrs Aniedi Ekpeyong, representative of provost of the Cross River State College of Health Technology, Mrs. Jane Iyaji Eneregbu, representative of the Director General, Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mr. Evong Bassey, SA to the Governor on Primary Health Care Development Agency, Joseph Idiege Director of Administration, Elder E. U. Omini, Statistician General of the State , Mr. Joseph Ogar and Director, Nursing (Clinical), Ministry of Health, Dr. Pauline Obute who spoke on behalf of the participants.
Highpoint of the event was presentation of certificates of participation to each participant.
