WHEN MEN TURN IGNOBLE ~ LEONARD AFUOH

It still beats my imagination how Senator *Victor Ndoma Egba* thinks he can just walk his way into the red chambers ever again, after twelve whooping years as Senator. It staggers my sensibilities even more, how blind he thinks the electorates are. Just in case he might have forgotten (of course, for a man who always chew the fleshy part of the meat, it’s easy to forget), let this be for the records.

It took the mediation of noble men of the perk of Senator Liyel Imoke, to have the former Senate Leader re-elected for the third time as Senator. His campaign messages were nothing connected to projects executed, constituents empowered or anything that tells the presence of the people’s Senator in a Senatorial District. True, he was sterling on the floor of the House. But that is just about 30% expectation from a Senator in Nigeria who garners all the monies meant for the development of every community under his jurisdiction - resources dished out by the global community to help the desolate and destitute in Africa.

For eight years we had enjoyed no impact from the Senator, our Senator. No sense of closeness, no strand of connection with the people. We were abandoned, undermined and estranged. And then we have asked; what for God’s sake did the distinguish Senator do with all the millions pushed to his coffers as constituency allocation for eight years? We all complained. Nobody did not. And when the year was ripe, even a suckling knew it was high time he was ditched to the sidelines after a horrible representation. All the peopled yearned for was a breath of fresh air. The likes of Lt. Col. Paul Edor Obi, Rtd, were filling the spaces, winning the hearts of constituents, and like an arid march longs for a touch of rain, we tarried on tenterhooks to plunge our thumbs for the one time Military Administrator until the Avatar landed. Oga Liyel just has a way of wooing us against our liking. He watered down our zest. He turned an ocean over our flaming souls. And like a freshly deflowered maiden, we followed him. Against our wish, we did his bidding. We sent Victor back to the hallowed chambers. It earned him the Senate Leader. And as ingrates would always do, he came asking for another term, the fourth term. Thankfully, the same Avatar, Sabotaged his every move.

At the time when the PDP family needed people like him to stick their butt for her, he stabbed her in the back flinging his loyalty to the latrine. Like a masochist, he screwed her in her pain without looking back. How shattering it feels to be ditched by a lover, who goes basking in the warmth of a rival!

Again another year is here and the then Senate Leader is back again like a loose cannon gonging falsehood in the eardrums of the electorates for another term in the red chambers. Whoever told him he is the most outstanding in Cross River Central Senatorial District? If that’s the lie he has been feeding on, it is high he went in search of Baba Ijebu for some radical purgative. If seeking the fourth term is how growth is measured, then the word ‘growth’ should be expunged from the concordance. Senator Benedict Ayade was a senator, now he is a Governor. That is growth. Senator John Owan Enoh was in the State House of Assembly, then the Federal House of Representatives, ousted him into the Senate, and now he is gunning for the number one office in Cross River State (though a failed mission already). That is growth. Sandy Ojang Onor was a Local Government Chairman, a Commissioner, and now reaching for the Senatorial office. That too is growth. There are plethora of offices to vie for in Nigeria. If he is so outstanding, let him grab the bull by the horn by contesting for the number one office of the Federation. Only then can we all fling our weights behind him in regal pride. And I heard he was promised the Senate President if he wins. Well, he will not win. You see, ambition is like a black blindfold that denies you the chance to see reality. Perhaps he should ask his co-traitor (Godswill Obot Akpabio), what he was told before defecting to the APC. Let him ask “how market?”

And… yes, about Sandy Onor, God has a way of replacing every “Judas” with a “Mathias”. Whatever Ndoma Egba thinks he is, Sandy Onor is double of that. He is an embodiment of capacity, competency intellectuality, dependability, guts, oratory, drive, gregariousness, generosity, and everything else it takes to standout in the red chambers. As a statement of fact, if he had the kind of opportunities the then Senate Leader had enjoyed, Central Senatorial District would be a Glory land by now. To spice it all, Sandy is a fresh hand, a fresh breath. He is even better positioned for the Senate politically and geographically. In him there is hope for the youth. There is hope that people like us will not have to wait forever before we become Senators too. I will support him. I will canvass for him. I will vote for him.

Let Ndoma Egba release all that he has left of his plunder in his twelve years stint as Senator, then return to Akparabom, or better still, Daura with Mallam Jubrin, sorry, Buhari, for all that I care. For the glory has departed from him.

Leonard Akwo.
