2018 Int'l Day for Girl Child: "Ezama Calls for State of emergency in Girl Child Education to mitigate vulnerability and competitiveness".



Chief Mrs Theresa N. Ezama JP, the Cross River State Chairperson for Child Protection Commission, said that the education of the Girl Child will reduce her vulnerability in the society.

Ezama said this on the occasion to commemorate the 2018 United Nations International Day for the Girl Child, marked on October 11. This usually takes place October 11th of every year. 

She said “the comprehensive education covering formal, informal and nonformal modes, for the Girl Child will prepare her adequately for the challenges of a largely patriarchal society.” 

Ezama urged the Federal Government to pay adequate attention to Girl Child education. She lamented on the figures of out of school girl child, which is on the increase day after day. Over two million five hundreds Girl Child are out of School across the globe.

The Chairperson explained that the Ayade led administration is fully committed to eliminating the hurdles and societal drawbacks hindering the full participation of the Girl Child and women in general, in the affairs of State.

She assured that her  commision is fully committed to the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of initiatives and ideas with emphasis on gender equality in primary and secondary school enrolment as well as the building of more schools.

“One of our priorities in the education sector is to make sure every girl child is enroll in school instead of roaming the streets indulging in character not healthy for womanhood and the society at large. 

Ezama said, The Back to school campaign initiated by CPC is to better serve this purpose,” and provide all the materials needed for Girl Children to drive in every sphere of their endeavours. 

She further said: “In Cross River State, our support for female Education has produced  young female  professionals that are now employers of labour.

This effort is mainstreaming Girls and Ladies in the workforce and equipping them with the capacity to earn good wages and walk shoulder high with opposite sex"

She decried the ocio-cultural practices that relegated the Girl Child to the background in the society and urged stakeholders to create equal opportunities for both Boys and Girls, who are equally talented, to fast-track socio-economic development.

Ezama called on Cross Riverians to continue to support the state government’s efforts in protecting the right of the girl child.

According to the United Nations, the International Day for the Girl child highlights and addresses the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

This year’s edition kick starts the beginning of a year long effort to spur global attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face before, during, and after crises.
