Residents of Jikwoyi, an Abuja suburb, have threatened to slam a N100 billion suit on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) if they are not provided with prepaid meters within seven days.
They made the threat on Tuesday when they came out in hundreds to protest their dissatisfaction over huge estimated electricity bills.
The protesters displayed placards some of which read: ‘AEDC. No prepaid meter, no payment’; AEDC: We are customers, don’t treat us like criminals”.
Addressing journalists, the Vice-President, Landlords Association, Jikwoyi, Mr. Julius Ogezi, said, “through the action of AEDC, residents of the community now pay astronomical bills for electricity not consumed. It has thus become increasingly difficult to cope with these charges which are foisted on us through bill estimation.
“In an attempt to stem this ugly trend, concerted efforts and appeals where made to AEDC to install prepaid meters in our houses which where blatantly turned down”
“Our resort to this action today is in furtherance of our firm belief in the rule of law and civility in erring our grievances”.
They further condemned continued extortion by officials of AEDC, Jikwoyi to replace damaged electrical installations.
According to one of the aggrieved landlords, “AEDC is a private entity with investors. They make consumers to pay for damaged poles, transformers, wire’s etc”.
The landlord further distributed to journalists a list of items and other expenditure totalling N429,530, incurred when they installed a transformer in their area, in a part of Jikwoyi.
At the AEDC Office in Jikwoyi, the Manager referred journalists to their area office in Garki or Wuse zone 4, saying he is not authorised to speak on the matter
