ABUJA- CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi West has asked President Muhammad Buhari to as a matter of urgency, apologize to the National Assembly for allegedly making what he termed, disparaging statements against the integrity of the Parliament when he said some lawmakers have been there for 10 years without doing anything.

Senator Melaye who came under Order 14, personal explanation drew the attention of the Senate to what he described as “in parliamentary and uncomplimentary language” of President Buhari; asking him to tenders an unreserved apology.
Presenting video evidence before the Senate, Melaye said that Buhari made the uncharitable statement when he met with members of his campaign organization led by the Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs, Col. Hameed Ali in his Aso Rock Villa last week; pointing out that most appointees of government draw strength from the President’s disposition to behave rudely to the institution of the Senate.
Melaye also questioned why the Comptroller General of Customs, Handed Ali should be at the head of the campaign organisation of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that the Nigeria Customs is a paramilitary organisation and that the position of Comptroller General is a rank which should be separated from politics.
The lawmaker who noted that this explained why he moved earlier that the Comptroller of Customs should wear his uniform, said, “If he had worn his uniform, he wouldn’t have led the Buhari Campaign Organisation.”
Meanwhile, the National Security Adviser. NSA, Major- General Mohammed Babagana Monguno, retd is at the moment at a closed session with the Senators, briefing them on the proliferation of dangerous firearms, spate of killings by terrorists and kidnapping by Hoodlums across the country.

Arising from His Excellency’s approval to regularise contract staff of Cross River Water Board Limited (CRSWBL), about two hundred and twelve (212) Junior staff have been regularised, and are to commence full working activity with effect from 1st of June 2018.

While, two hundred and twenty-one (221) Senior staff are awaiting documentation from next week to perfect the regularisation process.

While thanking Governor Ayade for this feat, the Acting Managing Director, Dr Stephen Odey said he appreciates his fatherly love and concern over contract staff and Cross Riverians at large.

Dr Odey charged all beneficiaries to live up to their responsibility and continue to support the administration of Prof. Ben Ayade.

“You all need to re-dedicate yourself to this Job. I will conduct inspection from time to time to ensure that everyone is carrying out their duties and contributing positively to the development of this Board which was not done in the past. This is a new dawn and we must ensure that the right thing is done at all times,” he emphasised.

He further  added that not all regularised staff will remain with the Board, others will be deployed to various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for proper utilization.

The United States Consul General to Nigeria, Mr. John Bray says he is impressed with the industrialisation drive of the Cross River Governor, Prof Ben Ayade within his three years in office.

Bray stated this in Calabar on Wednesday shortly after being conducted round several industries built by the Ayade-led administration in the state.

Industries visited included the Cross River Garment Factory, the Rice Seeds and Seedlings Factory, the Calabar Pharmaceutical Company and the 21 megawatts power plant.

"I am really impressed as I have not seen a lot of things like these in Nigeria in my five years in the country. Seeing all these developments in one area is very impressive," the US Consul General remarked.

Bray who was in Calabar to prepare grounds for some visitors into the state explained that he had to take time out to see investments opportunities in the state and that what he saw is a beautiful state that would compel him to visit often.

On possible areas of collaboration between the United States and Cross River, he said it was evident that such exist already with the American-made tractors on ground at the rice seeds and seedlings factory as well as American engineers at the power plant.

His words: "There are always areas of collaboration. Seeing the American-made tractors in the rice city with United States engineers on ground, that is an evidence of collaboration between the United States and Nigeria, though from a private sector, but there is collaboration already."

Continuing, Bray said: "it is beautiful because government cannot do everything, so seeing the private sector here and United States products and engineers on ground, it is very great."

In his reaction,  Governor Ayade expressed delight that his efforts at developing the state were being acknowledged, adding that "it is a reflection of the fact that I have a pass mark from America and Germany. Americans don't mince their words, when they want to say something to you, they will tell you truly how they feel."

"This is my third year in office and we have gone round three factories with many more to go if we had the time. I wanted to take him to the largest banana plantation in Africa few minutes away from here, but I am sure we have other things to do, but one day we will be back and I will take them through."

Ayade who commended Bray for accentuating and concentrating America investments and interest in Cross River, noted that the deployment of American turbines, engines and other machines in the factories remain a source of delight to him.

Highpoints of the visit was the planting of rice seedlings with the transplanter machine at the factory amidst cheers by Cross Riverians who gathered at the scene chanting, "digital," "digital governor," "super digital," "na you we know."

It has become a disapproving irritating habit of members and leaders of the APC to blame her constant party failure on PDP both at the National and State levels. This probably is their only achievement since 2015 they came onboard as ruling party. One would wonder If PDP is the Ruling party in Nigeria with the way she is fiercely opposed. I suppose its fear of their impending doom, they can feel it and its coming with a ravaging voracity, without mercy because the APC government has failed pitiably in all ramifications; infrastructural development, security of lives and properties, economic stability, employment opportunities and so on. The so called "fight against corruption" is a mighty mirage from the pit of hell and must be sent right back. Where are the recovered loots? How about the celebrated thieves in agbada and kaftan we see daily on our TV screens smiling mischievously in decorated lies they feed us with daily?

In Abuja, till tomorrow, the clueless agbada thieves through their Liar Mohammed if he must talk to Nigerians, PDP Jonathan's administration form the basis of his criminal speeches in an attempt to hide their APC government's incompetence and maladministration. The blunt truth is that Buhari has failed and there's just one decision Nigerians will make in 2019, "SEND BUHARI BACK TO DAURA". Back here in Cross River State, these shameless, disgruntled, uncoordinated APC members without any means of party identification have made it a breakfast, lunch and dinner duty to take on the PDP government of Cross River State on social media. Pastor Uguru Usani is your party man, has been in the party since God knows when and today, as in many other cases, to hide your disunity, greed and failure to produce an acceptable State exco, you blame the governor of the state, a PDP man. Continue to accuse the PDP family while we wax stronger in readiness to devour the existence of a party called APC in 2019.  Not even shattered pieces of the party will be left to pick.

So long as Cross River State is concerned, APC can climb up to mount Kilimanjaro and shout out accusations on the government, it will not even be convincing to a day old baby. Not even councillors will emerge from APC. Face your party problems and if its not working, move out. Soon, when APC members fail to impregnate their wives, feed their families and pay their bills, they will accuse PDP as they are now,  accusers of PDP brethren.

Unlike Sergio Ramos, it’s not in Mo Salah’s character to be an awful bastard .
And as a result, he hasn’t tried to blame the Spaniard for the calculated takedown that injured our Egyptian’s shoulder.

Salah, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool this term just gone, left the field early against Real Madrid in Kiev – and with his exit went the majority of our spark up top.
Many believe Ramos purposely injured Salah, as there’s evidence of him doing the same to Dani Alves in the past, but Mo isn’t holding a grudge.
Ruben Pons, speaking to the Independent , said: “Salah has not told me anything about Sergio Ramos.
“I don’t think he is angry with him. It was an accidental challenge.
“We knew that it was something serious as soon as he fell on the ground because he never complains. We feared the worst.
“I was devastated. I tried to keep him calm. I told him he couldn’t do anything about it now and that he should not worry. It was time to look for solutions and not regret that things had not worked out.”
In our opinion, this says much more about Salah as a person than it does Ramos.
The defender is a winner, but he’s also a cheat.
Having said that, if Virgil van Dijk had injured Cristiano Ronaldo, we’re not sure we’d mind too much – so we guess it’s about the lengths you take to secure the top prizes.
Now, Salah is facing a race against time to get fit for the World Cup. We really hope he can make the competition and show everyone he’s the best player on the planet, which he wasn’t able to in the Ukraine because of Ramos.

The cross river state Director General for due process and price intelligence bureau, Hon.Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba has expressed shock over the sudden death of Obudu lawmaker, Hon.Steven Ukpukpen.





In a statement made available on social media by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Egbara Emmanuel Ikaba, he described the late  as very vibrant in legislative activities.






“The late Gentleman was a vibrant lawmaker and public servant who was very passionate about his assignment and engagements in the Cross river state house of Assembly.





“Hon.Steven Ukpukpen is one lawmaker you can never be in doubt where he stands on a particular issue. He spoke his mind fearlessly,” Eba said.
“His contributions at plenary were always very incisive and rich. I find it difficult to acknowledge that he will not resume plenary again.






“My heart goes out to his family, the Cross river state house of Assembly and the government and people of Cross river State over the loss of this conscientious and patriotic Cross riverian. He shall be sorely missed,” he added.






The Director General prayed God to grant Hon.Steven a place among the righteous in Heaven and his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

On this Democracy Day 2018, I want to urge all Nigerians to pray for peace in Nigeria. We need peace in Nigeria. And it is up to you and I to ensure that our National Motto: Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress, is a reality and not just mere rhetoric. I urge Nigerians to understand and accept that nobody’s political, economic, religious or social ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian.

As this year’s Democracy Day falls on the holy month of Ramadan, let me seize the opportunity to also extend Ramadan greetings to the Muslim Ummah. As you pray for Nigeria, I join my faith with yours and look forward to our prayers being answered by Almighty God.

There are many opportunities and crises on the horizon, but we must have the mentality of seeing the opportunity in crisis rather than the crisis in opportunity.

We have one of the fastest growing youth population in the world and we must see this as an opportunity, not a crisis.

As I said previously, Nigerian youths ARE NOT LAZY.

What our youth need are opportunities to showcase their positive talents. They need leaders who believe in them and show affirmation for them through their words and actions.

Democracy is a game of numbers and the youths have the numbers. More than 50% of our population are youths. If we develop policies, programs and projects to empower the youth of Nigeria, the Nigerian youth, who single handedly created Nollywood, the third largest movie industry in the world, can be expected to return the favour and make Nigeria proud.

And they are already making us proud both locally and internationally.

Nigerian youths are showcasing their brilliance around the world and I want to make special mention of Ukoma Michael, who at thirteen years of age invented a battery operated fan that lasts for 19 hours on a full charge. This ingenuity domiciled in Michael should be encouraged by our leadership.

Internationally, Princess Elizabeth Bright and Ramota Tele Lawal, two 22 year old Nigerian youths who in May of 2018 became the youngest elected councillors in the United Kingdom, have made us proud. Very proud indeed.

These youths are the epitome of the hardworking, talented, innovative and ambitious Nigerian youth who make our nation respected in the community of nations and give us hope for tomorrow and national pride for today.

Rather than discourage them with our words and actions, we as leaders must give our youths hope by using our language to draw out the very best in them. We must accept that nations only grow when elders plant trees whose shade they know they may never personally enjoy. Leaders must think of the next generation and not just the next election.

While we celebrate Ukoma, Elizabeth and Ramota, I know that there are perhaps millions in Nigeria who are equally brilliant and only need the right enabling environment to unleash their creative genius. They are my inspiration on this Democracy Day. They are the reason why I believe in the continued corporate existence of this great nation founded on justice, equity and freedom.

Ants are wonderful creatures and they affirm there can be unity in diversity.





These creatures work collectively and in harmony for one goal ‒ to support their colony during hard times and in the time of harvest.







 The ant colony is made up of the queen, whose role is to lay eggs that will replenish the population to avoid extinction. Workers are another group, and their function is to hunt for food, care for the little ones, work the nest and safeguard the colony.






 For the male ants, their function is to mate with the queen for reproduction. It is said that after they have performed this function, they may die.







Comparably, it can be said that the extent to which a state,a nation or a community can excel is determined by how well it can function like the ant colony. In that light, it becomes a necessity rather than an option that we the Yala nation rise and rescue land.









Arise Yala people for your Land,
The Yala Nation demands your devotion.
Let us all unite to uphold her,
And make her great and strong.






We are all involved
In building our motherland.
This is what I glean from this dream: Having a sense of belonging is the foundation of getting involved, and it’s not a one-man affair. On the contrary, ‘we are all involved’ in building the ‘colony’.







Unfortunately, not everyone perceives it this way. Sometimes, what the citizenry should hold themselves responsible for is quickly attributed to government officials. The name Ogar omeka (meaning government in Yala) has become a household name, but sadly for the wrong reasons.






 Government has her role in  development and so does the citizenry. We don’t have to intentionally make a public place dirty with filth and say to ourselves that Ogar omeka will clean it.






 We can do better and assume responsibility for cleanliness of those places. After all, we are all involved in keeping the homes clean.







Different arms of government have their roles and the citizenry also have something to contribute. The functions are different but the goal is one to build the motherland.






 According to Good Luck Jonathan, we face neither east nor west but forward. We must therefore raise our voices together, march forward together and raise that voice for Yala. More than ever before, let the sense of belonging be cultivated in homes, schools and institutions. We can do better. Yala is our motherland and here we call home.







I am very passionate about student empowerment and I would love to see students get more involved. Students should not think that they belong to society only after school, but they should get involved even now while they are in school. I believe students are an asset and they are part of the solution to  development. Not in the future but now, hence its needful that students start seeing themselves as such and come on board fully in building our motherland.






A student may not be the queen or the male ant but a student can function as a worker to ‘work the nest’. It is said that the left hand is for cleaning the right hand and the right hand for cleaning the left hand. In the same way, students have their role to play in  development and their needed support must not be denied.






My name is Egbara Emmanuel Ikaba and I am involved in building my motherland. I am a ‘worker’ and I work the nest by championing student empowerment. Get involved, discover where you belong in the ‘colony’, that is if you haven’t already discovered it. Let the government worker be wholly devoted to his duty, and let the private worker also be dedicated at his post.







Let the teacher be wholly devoted, and let the student also be faithful in bringing their quota to the table. We need to do it right because we are all involved. It ought to be so because Yala demands our devotion and we have to unite to uphold her in making her great and strong.






We are one people, one hope, and we are all involved in building our motherland.

Dear compatriots,
Today, we celebrate the re-birth of our nation’s democracy. On this day, eighteen  years ago, the world watched as we ushered in a new era of government chosen by the people  after countless years of military rule.





Democracy Day marks the turning point in our history, when we as a nation defied all odds and expectations, and chose to rebuild our motherland on the principles adhered to by many nations before us: that the people of a country can stand sovereign over their elected leaders, by exercising their right to choose at the ballot box.








Our democracy since 1999 has hurtled through numerous crossroads that have served to define our strength as a state/ nation, and have made many of our institutions stronger. On this day, I want us to recognise Cross riverians from all walks of life for their tireless and heroic sacrifices that have kept us together  in spite of the difficult challenges that have confronted us.






 I want us to take a moment to pause, reflect on, and appreciate the millions of our fellow country-men and women, and those in every corner of the globe who have joined us to campaign tirelessly against the challenges facing  us particularly the killings that emanate from radical insurgents.






We must bear in mind that our organised strength lies in the common experiences we share with our fellow country men and women, and our everyday successes as a state are rooted in the foundations of our citizen-centered democracy.






Nevertheless, we must also never forget that just as our strength lies in our commonalities and shared experiences, our most potent power emanates from our strong voices.





 When our minds are as one, we are strong. When we speak out as one, we are formidable. When we demand as one, we are insurmountable.







 For this reason, on this anniversary of the founding of our Fourth Republic, I urge all Cross riverians to collectively work for the cross river dream.





We must demand that in 2019 Nigeria and Cross river state display its commitment to democracy, so that we have credible, free and transparent elctions. We must have the will and courage to defend our democracy. This is a process that starts now, that sees democratic and transparent processes to select candidates through to election day where we re free to vote for the candidate we believe in.






 democracy is not practiced by mirroring the language that we speak, where we come from or what religion we practice; democracy is the opportunity to address the issues that affect us all across board regardless of gender, age or religion.







We must acknowledge some of the realities that have presented themselves when election-time comes in our state, and enlighten others and ourselves against them.





One flaw that we have experienced in our young democracy is that it is often the case that many of our people choose leaders based on the constraints of sameness of , similarities in ethnicity, and other largely inconsequential values of state-building






 To counter this, we must view leadership through a lense of: who will best address our state and  local government  problems? In a nutshell, we must elect the best amongst us.








We must also continue to strive towards the definition,  or perhaps redefinition of the path that we as a state have chosen to take.






 It is not prudent for a complex state such as ours to always be reactionary in our response to events.





 We must begin to look into supporting and elevating proactive leaders who will not only defend the state when it is attacked, but will make her strong  so that any enemies, foreign or domestic, that may aspire to threaten our security and its people will be dealt with before they have the chance to cause us harm.











As a state founded upon our diversity, we come to this task well equipped with the resources, indigenous skills and zeal to surpass all expectations and projections that have, and are, being made by our state.







Let us continue to uphold the bond of citizenship that has kept us together as one indivisible people.






Let us also be diligent and firm in the belief that we shall harvest the dividends of the sacrifices that many have given to obtain and sustain our democracy.






Let us also understand, that this democracy of ours is not just a gift, but a responsibility to be harnessed and developed  for the benefit of generations that are yet to come.








In this regard, as we reflect, and celebrate yet another Democracy Day, I urge us all to march into the future knowing that in the spirit of togetherness, we can achieve more for our common success.






May God continue to bless Cross river state.

Address by Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria In commemoration of the 2018 Democracy Day Celebration, Tuesday, 29Th May, 2018
My Dear Nigerians!
Today marks the 19thyear of our nascent democracy and the 3rdAnniversary of this administration. I am thankful to Almighty God for bringing us thus far. This administration came at a time that Nigerians needed Change, the Change we promised and the Change we continue to deliver. We have faced a lot of challenges on this journey and Nigerians have stood by us in achieving the three cardinal points of this administration namely; Security, Corruption and the Economy.
2.The commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day is a celebration of freedom, a salute to the resilience and determination of Nigerians and a recommitment by Government to keep its promise to lead Nigeria into a new era of justice and prosperity.
3.Public safety and security remains the primary duty of this Government. Before this Administration came into being 3 years ago, Boko Haram held large areas of land spanning several Local Governments in the North East.
4.Today, the capacity of the insurgents has been degraded leading to the re-establishment of authority of government and the release of captives including, happily, 106 Chibok and 104 Dapchi girls, and over 16,000 other persons held by the Boko Haram.
5.In order to minimize the impact of the insurgency on Internally Displaced Persons, Government has established secure IDP Camps and has improved the mechanism for the distribution of basic aid, foods and essential commodities using various strategies in collaboration with local and international Organizations.
6.Efforts are in process for resettlement of IDPs in their home communities by providing schools, hospitals, clinics, water and sanitation to facilitate a quick return to economic activities. Government is similarly implementing de-radicalization and rehabilitation programmes to facilitate sustainable peace and development.
7.The unfortunate incidences of kidnappings, herdsmen and farmers clashes in several communities which have led to high number of fatalities and loss of properties across the country is being addressed and the identified culprits and their sponsors shall be made to face the full wrath of the law. All the three tiers of Government are presently engaged with communities and religious organizations to restore peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.
8.I want to commend members of the Multinational Joint Task Force drawn from Niger, Benin, Chad, Cameroon and our own country in collaboration with the International Community who are assisting in the fight against insurgency in the North East. I also commend the gallantry of members of our Armed Forces and other security agencies that have continued to provide security for lives and properties across the country. State and Local traditional authorities are helping with much needed intelligence in this fight against insurgency.
9.This administration is pained over the grievous loss of lives and properties occasioned by the carnage of insurgency and other forms of criminality in the country. I wish to assure Nigerians that we will not rest until all criminal elements and their sponsors are brought to justice. Government is boosting the capacity of our security agencies through recruitment of more personnel, training and procurement of modern equipment, enhancement of intelligence gathering as well as boosting their morale in the face of daunting challenges.
10.The Niger Delta Region has enjoyed relative peace through social inclusiveness and cooperation of the Elders and the good people of the region. Government is committed to implementing the comprehensive peace, security and development plan for the region. The environmental clean-up of the region which commenced with the launch in Bodo, Ogoni in June, 2016 is progressing satisfactorily. Furthermore farming assets are being revived and investors in cocoa and palm oil plantations are showing serious interest.
11.The second primary object of this Administration is to fight corruption headlong. Like I have always said, if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will destroy the country. Three years into this Administration, Nigerians and the international community have begun to applaud our policies and determination to fight corruption. We are more than ever before determined to win this war, however hard the road is. I therefore appeal to all well-meaning Nigerians to continue to support us in this fight.
12.Various policy measures already put in place to stem the tide of corrupt practices are yielding remarkable results. Some of these key reform policies include:
a.The Treasury Single Account (TSA) has realized Billions of Naira being saved from maintenance fee payable to banks. N200 Billion has also been saved from elimination of ghost workers in public service.
b.The Whistle-Blowing Policyhas helped to recover over N500 Billion;
c.The Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit set up with a mandate to validate controls, assess risks, prune personnel costs, ensure compliance with Public Financial Management reforms has helped to identify and remove over 52,000 ghost workers from the Federal Government MDAs Payroll;
d.The Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) aimed at expanding tax education and awareness has offered the opportunity for tax defaulters to regularise their status in order to enjoy the amnesty of forgiveness on overdue interest, penalties and the assurance of non-prosecution or subject to tax investigations.
e.The Sovereign Wealth Fund project portfolio has been expanded with an injection of US$650 million so as to strengthen its investment in local infrastructure, power, health, re-construction of Abuja-Kano road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, East West Road (Section V) and the Mambilla Hydro-electric Power project as well as the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge.
13.The fight against corruption through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has resulted in recoveries of Billions of Naira, as well as forfeiture of various forms of assets. This alongside other efforts has improved Nigeria’s international image and regional cooperation.
14.We have retained the services of one of the world’s leading assets tracing firms to investigate and trace assets globally. This is in addition to the exploitation of provisions of existing Treaties, Conventions as well as Bilateral Agreements with Multilateral bodies and Nations. Nigeria has also signed Mutual Legal Assistance Agreements to ensure that there is no hiding place for fugitives.
15.This Administration has therefore focused on revamping the ailing economy it inherited in 2015. In 2016, Government executed an expansionary budget and developed the Strategic Implementation Plan. For the first time, 30% of the budget was earmarked for capital expenditure which represents an upward review when compared with the 2015 budget. The SIP was followed by the development of a comprehensive medium term plan – the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan 2017 – 2020.
16.The broad strategic objectives of the ERGP were to; Restore and sustain economic growth; Build a globally competitive economy; and Invest in our people. The implementation of the ERGP has started yielding results. The National Bureau of Statistics reports that the economy grew by 1.95% in 1stquarter 2018, which is a good performance when viewed against -0.91 in 1st quarter 2017 and -0.67% in 1st quarter 2016 respectively.
17.Our foreign reserve has improved significantly to 47.5 billion USD as of May, 2018 as against 29.6 billion USD in 2015. The inflationary rate has consistently declined every month since January, 2017.
18.Recently, Government conducted Focus Labs in three key sectors of the Economy namely, Agriculture & Transport, Manufacturing and Processing as well as Power and Gas. These have yielded significant prospects for investments and Job creation to the tune of US$ 22.5 billion with a potential for creating more than 500,000 jobs by 2020. These investment generation initiatives are expected to increase capital inflows in the form of foreign direct investment. There is a high prospect that the cumulative investments from this first phase of the Labs will hit US$39.2 billion by 2025.
19.Under agriculture, Nigeria continues to pursue a strategic food security programme built around self-sufficiency and minimization of import dependency. As a result, rice importation from other countries has been cut down by 90% which has a direct impact on foreign reserves.
20.The Social Investment Programmes (SIP) has been created as a means to graduating our citizens from poverty through capacity building, investment and direct support. The major strategic objective is to restore livelihood, economic opportunities and sustenance for the poor across the country. The SIP programmes and projects include:
a.Home Grown School Feeding Programme – About 8.2 million pupils are currently being fed from 24 States of the Federation with over 75,000 Catering Staff engaged under the programme.
b.The Conditional Cash Transfer has so far recorded over 297,000 caregivers and being trained by 2,495 Community Facilitators in 21 states. Less privileged Nigerians are now being paid N5,000 monthly stipend in 9 pilot States of Bauchi, Borno, Cross River, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Osun and Oyo. Eventually the scheme will cover all the 36 states of the federation including the FCT.
c.Under the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme – About 264,269 loans had been disbursed to 4,822 societies in the 36 States and FCT, while another 370,635 are awaiting release of funds.
d.N-Power Job creation Scheme – is targeted at providing jobs for unemployed young graduates and has so far recruited 200,000 youths while the next batch of 300,000 have been selected, verified and would soon be deployed across the 36 States and the FCT. Furthermore, 20,000 non-graduate volunteers have also been selected to kick off the N-Build programme in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria.
21.In the area of power generation, Nigerians from all parts of the country continue to report better power supply and less use of generators. This underscores the effectiveness of the methodical plan to deliver incremental and uninterrupted power supply to our homes, markets, offices and factories.
22.The country achieved 5, 222.3 MW representing the highest peak of power generated onto the national grid and delivered to customers in December, 2017. With new facilities, repairs and rehabilitations by Government and private investors, generation capability now exceeds 7,500 MW.
23.This Administration is committed to lawful interventions to ensure the operators of the distribution business live up to expectations especially in the areas of distribution capacity, service delivery, collection efficiency, and metering to eliminate contentious estimated billing.
24.The Transportation Sector continues to undergo a series of reforms in order to sustain the international best practices and ensure safety and security. The nation’s major airports have witnessed reconstruction of runways, installation of navigational equipment and new international terminals due for commissioning in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Enugu. Bilateral Air Services Agreements between Nigeria and the Governments of other countries will significantly open up new flight routes.
25.As a result of strict regulatory and compliance policies, Nigeria retained her Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Category 1 status, after a routine international audit. Recently, a new Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facility with capacity for aircraft C-checks and other comprehensive levels of maintenance was established in Lagos. This would save the country an estimated $90m annually.
26.Giant strides have been recorded over the past three years to improve road transport infrastructure in all geopolitical zones of the country.
27.The Railway Sector has also received tremendous attention as this Administration is committed to the goal of linking all State capitals in the Federation by rail network to ease the movement of goods and passengers.
28.The Education Sector especially at tertiary level has continued to witness expansion in order to improve access to higher education by millions of youths in Nigeria. Over the last three years, Government has approved the establishment of 1 new Federal Polytechnic, granted licenses for the establishment of 4 State and 14 private-owned Universities as well as 12 private Polytechnics.
29.Government has also continued to support the implementation of various initiatives aimed at improving the quality of Basic Education delivery. Thus, it has ensured proper funding at the Basic Education level with the disbursement of N42.2 billion UBE Matching Grant to 26 States and the FCT, N851.5 million Special Education Grant disbursed to 23 States and private providers of Special Education and N2.2 billion Teachers Professional Development Fund to 33 States and the FCT.
30.The Federal Government has continued to support fiscal sustainability at the sub-national governments through the implementation of the Budget Support Facility which was accompanied by the 22- point Fiscal Sustainability Plan. Thus, bailouts funds were made available to States to ease their fiscal challenges and other obligations including payment of salaries.
31.In addition, a total of 73 Ecological Fund projects for the control of gully erosion in different communities across all geopolitical zones have been completed in the last three years and are undergoing commissioning while 53 other projects are ongoing. The execution of these projects has generated 357 skilled jobs and 1,350 unskilled jobs during this period.
32.It is pertinent to also make mention of the immeasurable contributions of the Nigerian woman to national development and advancement of democracy, over the last three years. The government and people appreciate you all as mothers of our great country.
33.My dear country men and women, as we all celebrate our democratic experience, let us resolve to avoid hatred and intolerance; we can only achieve our objectives in an atmosphere of harmony and peaceful co-existence.
34.Finally, the up-coming months will usher us into another season of general elections. Let me use this opportunity to urge us all to conduct ourselves, our wards and our constituencies with the utmost sense of fairness, justice and peaceful co-existence such that we will have not only hitch free elections but also a credible and violence free process.
35.In few days to come, I will be joined by many promising young Nigerians to sign into law the “Not Too Young to Run” Bill
